I find this people sad & selfish in a way. They're putting not only themselves but OTHER PEOPLE in danger w/ their collecting. A lot of they're homes are filled w/ black mold, dust, bacteria, smells of urine & fecal matter everywhere, exposing the FEW PEOPLE who come into their lives to a myriad of illness. & Deep down they just don't care. It's not a matter of being "neat freaks" as "Therzroomattheback" ignorantly says. It's about living SANITARY & clutter-free & dealing w/ a mental illness.
Most of these horder programs piss me off because some god damned family member wants to impose on a person who has decided to live that way and the god damned family member, for some reason, thinks that their way of existence is better. The "horder" likes his or her existence, the way it is, leave them alone you morons. They are not demanding that you change your ways, give them the same respect and quit judging them. Just shut the fuck up and let them live their life you judgemental nuts
My family also suffers from this disease. We clean, organize, and we actually get on with life.
If we can do it, so can they. They need to learn that soon that they need to do something about it. I know some people suffer worse, but if they don't accept help, then what can people say? They have to learn, not hoard.
Fuck off, you moron, you have the god damned disease because you are some sort of clean freak. I'd rather live in the hoarder environment that your moron clean freak existence.
@ConspiracyChannel101: I wouldn't be surprised if "Therzroomattheback" IS the hoarder & doesn't want to admit it. So sad. Pathetic, really. I say let the fool on the hill of stuff do what he wants. Let him be buried under his crap. Hard head makes a soft ass I always say.
@Burnz2much I agree with you. If he dont want to throw away things thats fine, but for the love of god pack it away. I would kick the idiot out he could live in the shed.... and hoard all he likes....
@Therzroomattheback No i dont live alone, i do live with some one ( not my mother and certainly not in a basement ) How the hell can you call me a Moron? when all my comment stated was that he needs to pack it away. Thats fine if some one wishes to live that way but when living in a shared space, the other person also needs to be considered. I mean some of the shit that he has in that house does not even make sense why he would hold on to it. Thats MORONIC.
@Therzroomattheback I think your comment(s) is just intended to offend and upset people, swearing is not big and not clever. You sound like an angry person and clearly have no idea how to communicate with out using the " F" word and or insulting people.
"If you only have a hammer, you tend to see every problem as a nail."
Abraham Maslow.... i also see that you have sent a comment to your self! What was it you called me again ? " A F**KING MORON "? really ?
I visit third world countries and they do have these mental problems. I agree, they do not get treatment. This problem becomes worse with age and in third world countries they don't live as long.
I know someone (mid 60s) with these hoarding traits and encourage him to donate, share and sell. Sometimes he will let me do that for him. He is brilliant but there seems to be something (mentally) missing to enable him to sort and organize. It's so sad. He is a bachelor. No one can live with him.
Its pretty sad your wife has dealt with your clutter for many years.. you see her cry about wanting her house back n u cant throw your GARBAGE away.. you should be EXTREMELY thankful your wife hasnt left you!!
Its extremely sad and a desperation without an easy solution. That story about living outside for 20 years, that's probably the most intense one I have heard of. The choice of things over people and life itself is frightening as an alternative.
I have a friend who is experiencing this exact thing! My heart breaks for her and I wish I could help her to realize her wonderful value and creativity. She's a wonderful person with a problem that is unique. We all have problems that are unique to us! Prayer can help!
I find it funny that hoarders seem to think that all things are valuable, and yet they leave the stuff lying on the floor and walk all over it, let things collect dust and fall apart....
The good thing about having elderly hoarder family is if they die, you inherit this stuff and there's a chance you'll have something of value and get some money. :D
My brother's been a hoarder since early childhood (as early as I can remember, he is 5 years older than I am). Now he's 52- I haven't gone into his house for at least 6 years-no one does.
Just a matter of time before the health department declares his house unfit for human occupancy. Or it all falls in on him because I don't think it can bear the weight of his junk, much of which is machine tools, compressors, really heavy stuff and his house is over 100 years old.
I, for one, am glad these people exist. They just might the only ones to survive a ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE.
No but seriously, there are reasons for this behavior. Lloyd, for instance, began this behavior after losing his job. He has good reason to not trust the world anymore. Maybe it is those of us who trust that we can afford to throw away our bicycles who will not be the ones to SURVIVE THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE!!!
No but would you rather have 0 or 5,000 bicycle parts with which to FIGHT THE ZOMBIES?
My brother was a horder. Though I was bigger and knew amatuer boxing so i decided to punch his face and say to him that if he doesnt change then ill change his face permanently. He changed his ways right away. Thats how i deal with this people. Sometimes force and violence is the only option.

theres such a thing as a storage unit, for petes sakes, if thats a hobby, or interest, he could put the bikes back together to sell but it doesnt appear to be what he is or has been doing.point is people should not waste so much and if some one is willed to do the extra work then let them.
The British hoarders seem like real lightweights compared to the ones in America- you can still see parts of their floor. We really do lead the world in collecting crap.
Jails/prisons should be for ppl that are harmful to others. To put someone in jail b/c they hoard is wrong. The city could save $ by hiring a counselor or organizer for ppl like this. This is why the US has such a high incarceration rate. We throw harmless ppl in jail.
@PurdyBear1 - yes. There are Type A hoarders (Anal Retentive) who categorize and tidy up everything to a T. They dont seem to be as entertaining as the Type B ones who just throw stuff everywhere and can be dirty.
I don't care what kind of mental problems some one has, I would end up having a mental problem too if Ihad to live in the filth. I would leave, plain and simple.
Only in the so-called "developed" world! Look at tribal peoples in the Third World. They're just as human as we are, yet they don't suffer these mental maladies. They're too busy gathering food and other resources to help their families and their communities; they don't have time to give a shit about OCD, ADHD, or some other ailment. They might not have the modern luxuries and conveniences that we take for granted, but that does not make them less fortunate.
@frtw4428 I'll bet you won't see ADHD in cultures where the kids aren't forced to sit on hard seats in a classroom. Not sure about OCD tho...My theory is we are born with whatever psych dx we get, there's almost no developing serious dx's without them being inborn. Just saying.
@frtw4428 Just because they are worrying about things like malaria does not mean that OCD, ADHD does not exist there. Their supposed lack of modern luxuries and conveniences also may not make them more fortunate. RIGHT? Duh.
May I recommend a book to you? A Concise Introduction to Logic. Hurley. You can get an old edition for cheap cheap. Logic doesn't change that much. You brain, however, will explode and you'll start to stop making comments like this one you made here.
@frtw4428 You do have a point, I think it has to do with ppl not wanting to just admit they are nasty. Or take responsibility for their actions. I drink too much, I have a disease, cant throw things away-mental illness. It's just nasty.
@frtw4428 While you're technically right, I would much rather live in a first world country and be susceptible to these diseases of affluence than be a victim of parasites, poverty, and poor living conditions.
@frtw4428 I agree with you except for on one thing, the ADHD. Kids in third world, fourth world, and fifth world countries also suffer from that, they just aren't treated for it. ADHD is something your born with, OCD and many of those other ailments are something you develope.
@barkulator , frtw4428 said it all, and I will quote: "Only in the so-called "developed" world! Look at tribal peoples in the Third World. They're just as human as we are, yet they don't suffer these mental maladies. They're too busy gathering food and other resources to help their families and their communities; they don't have time to give a shit about OCD, ADHD, or some other ailment. "
@PungiFungi But they do have mental problems just like people in Western cultures. It's a stretch to say poorer people are happier and that Westerners are indulged. Schizophrenia is universal and the % of sufferers is constant. Bipolar was known in the ancient world. Psychosis was seen in Haiti after the quake. We can't say "just look at those people" because we don't know them, and I'll bet your source doesn't know any either. Just saying.
@barkulator , I would said that our Western materialistic society give people the opportunity to nurture these mental problems. When your mind is no longer gearing toward thinking about simple survival, it is now free to think about other nonsensical things.
@PungiFungi But they have time for canbalism, fighting other tribes, and all other sorts of bad stuff. Being in a 3rd world or developed country doesn`t change the fact that there are bad ppl, mentally ill ppl, and very good ppl. Ppl are ppl regardless of wealth.
@PungiFungi I think they have their own kind of frivolous or harmful nonsense b/c they are humans and not all the "bad stuff" is for survival. Some is purely from a bad heart. Canabalism isn`t for survival it is about dominance and revenge. Some cruel tribal rituals aren`t about survival either.
@paisleyyama , so I suppose that we should know better than these supersititious primitive cannibals. Hence even less reason to give these nutcases an excuse for their self-destructive behavior.
i think the hoarders are people who have had too many losses in their lives, and so they cling to everything they can - they can't take it any more that they might lose something or at something. i'm trying to think of what else could make these people flip like this?
The only way this toilet will be cleaned out is to beat Roy to death, and throw him in the garbage first. After that, getting rid of the rest of the useless junk will be so much easier!
I think it's interesting because you don't know what real treasures are hidden there. They would possibly be millionaires if someone sold that stuff! Bless them they can't help it.
@EmbroideredFlower WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT YOU FUCK TARD!? THESE PEOPLE ARE POUR PEOPLE WHO COLLECT FUCKING TRASH AND YOU THINK THATS THE KEY TO BEING A FUCKING MILLIONAIR!? WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?!
I WILL DESTROY YOUR SOUL!!!!!!
My grandfather is like this. I remember I went to school for two years and I lived with him. But before I could move in, I had to clean out one of the rooms to be able to live in it. The whole room was a sea of stuff going all the way up to my waist. I threw everything in the trash.
"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." ~ C. S. Lewis
I can definitely relate to the mentality of hoarders... i interpret it as an addiction, like any other addiction, even the simplest move towards "sobriety" can be like climbing mount everest. I sometimes have trouble watching these hoarding documentaries, its like looking into my world, of wanting desperately to clean up but not being able to part with a single item. Once you have the desire to posses it, you'll cling to it till your dying day. Okay on a more positive note, great show!
Wow what an amazing video! I feel for these people, I have OCD but the opposite end of the spectrum, I am a neat freak and I do not do well w/ a lot of people in my home, such as having a party. I get anxious and feel as though I will have a panic attack. OCD is a tough thing but you can get through it, I recommend cognitive behavior therapy it has positive out comes for many people.
My mom is a hoarder. I have posted videos of her place that I took more than a year ago. I finally got it up on you tube. Mom is collecting more stuff in her new apartment.
I know people like this, and recently I was presented with a rare opportunity to clear away some of the massive piles of garbage in the kitchen. I found 8 bags of bread which were saved because they contained the "heels" of the loaf - the bread had turned to dark gray dust. It was startling, but the amount of stuff I cleared away did wonders for the appearance of the kitchen.
My father has this thing. Last year he had a sickness and he is on a wheelchair now, so I went to his house and threw all his shit away, while he was sitting there unable to do anything and saying "Wait wait wait... are you sure you can throw that?" and I was all like "Yeah, don't worry dad, it's just some trash." Took me three days. Now once in a while he asks me for some thing I threw away, but it was worth it.
It's a form of lunacy. They rationalize to the end, the never change, then they die. It's because they really bond with the material items and not with their loved ones.
@InuvikPhil You should know that you cant use everything all at once. He could spend time repairing and stuff but that would take away from him sorting and discarding..... You are really stupid you should check for mental illness!
I think there needs to be a time limit. People always say "I'll get around to it," but realistically if you're not doing it a year later... sell it or throw it out.
it's so hard because telling a hoarder to stop collecting stuff and to get rid of it is like telling an anorexic to just eat- it doesn't work, it doesn't solve the problem. But at the same time, you can't allow someone to be drastically underweight just like you can't allow someone to live in all that filth- but I think they need to move slower, give him time to understand why he hoards, because at that rate, he'll just start it again
I always wonder on these Hoarding shows---and like these 5000 bicycles here! Does ANYTHING get recycled?? Or is all this crap going straight into our landfills?? Also--NO ONE needs 5000 broken bikes!!!! WTF
This is a mental illness, he can tell himself what he likes about being a "war baby". I dont know how the wife has managed to stay, I'd leave the bugga.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
rubym357 i agree with you , the only reason why they do it is because they are lazy and seek for attention , i dont feel bad for this people , they should be in a mental instittution
I'm not sure society should be so quick to judge and label people with seemingly odd behaviors. Maybe they should be seen as having a special talent instead. I would think a museum archive specialist, or warehouse director is just like this.
@Probewitch yeah but these people aren't keeping thiings for their value, they are afraid of losing things because they think it will open them up to emotional problems
@Probewitch I feel where you are going there, but it's not correct. Those people and their jobs and personalities are all organized around ORGANIZING and meticulously preserving and keeping objects and things in a very very very very very clean, organized, and very tidy and meticulously preserved fashion. They would NEVER EVER allow things to be treated or kept in the ways hoarders to. It's like, same spectrum, OPPOSITE END.
My father was a hoarder, and he suffered from PPD. The only way we were able to rectify the problem was to throw him out. It was a sad occasion, but we had no choice.
and who gives these "authorities" any right to spy on, steal, and destroy the property of another individual. i don't think this would be legitimized at your local supermarket.
actually most people go into psychology to try and solve thier own problems. That's what the last two psych majors I talked to told me. I've known a few outside of their work environment and find it to be true quite often.
They treat these people to easily. They need to go in commando style and throw this junk away. I'd make them throw it all away or go to jail. These hoarders need electric shock therapy and lots of it. Zaaaap crackle pop
I went in commando style when we moved. My mother is a compulsive hoarder. I hate it. And didnt want to bring it with us, so I threw it away. We fight every day about her precious junk that got threw away. She will never forget it. She has a problem.
It is just GARBAGE, but they see it as some kind of precious item with all this value.. I dont understand. It is a disorder. But I dont suggest commando style unless you dont have to live with it afterwards. I have to sneak to throw away anything, and she will GO THROUGH the garbage and pull things back out and bring it in again.
LOL! My sisters a hoarder. More than anything I want to go in and just chuck her stuff out! She'd have a melt down, tantrum, freak out, and ya know what? In two months her house would be re cluttered. Perhaps institutionalization is the answer.
Well I can tell you from being a landlord it's an issue. I co-own several apartment buildings that were built in the late 90's and they are in a very nice part of a small town about an hour from L. A. & we have had issues with this. We inspect apartments at least once per year & are in them for maintenance and repairs from time to time. We have had to evict several people and you would not have a clue that they were this way when you leased the apt to them, They can ruin an apartment with junk.
That would be a lot easier, but they'd have a rebound collection growing stronger. I do think some should be hospitalized because of food poisoning (remember the lady with the 'organic' and perfect looking pumpkin that was rotten to the core) or when hoarding body fluids. That has gone too far. Oh yeah..dead bodies of pets.
That food could easily make you sick. The dead animals can cause really bad health issues as well. Hoarding one thing or another is bad but when it affects their health it is an entirely different issue. You are right in your post.
@iraqidolphin You're absolutely right. These people have a mental problem and should be housed in an institution to keep them from hurting themselves or others.
Hoarding is a disorder and I feel horrible for these people and its sad to see them in this situations. I just recently learned about this and it truly horrified me
1 ur happiness and mental health and house functionality is worth more than any possession
2why do people w/ english accents sound so intelligent?
3 ive had the misfortune of being a child of hoarder and it is horrible horrible and embarrassing my kids can't visit and the mentality of a hoarder... they just save everything condiment packets, boxes things came in,it's truly disgusting and ugh it just pisses me off if you have kids please don't do this to them!!!!
I find this people sad & selfish in a way. They're putting not only themselves but OTHER PEOPLE in danger w/ their collecting. @PurdyBear1 - yes. There are Type A hoarders (Anal Retentive) who categorize and tidy up everything to a T. They dont seem to be as entertaining as the Type B ones who just throw stuff everywhere and can be dirty.

They might not have the modern luxuries and conveniences that we take for granted, but that does not make them less fortunate.
frtw4428 1 year ago 36

It's just nasty.
chrisrod3300 8 months ago
@frtw4428 While you're technically right, I would much rather live in a first world country and be susceptible to these diseases of affluence than be a victim of parasites, poverty, and poor living conditions.

jabmalassie 5 months ago
@frtw4428 I agree with you except for on one thing, the ADHD. Kids in third world, fourth world, and fifth world countries also suffer from that, they just aren't treated for it. ADHD is something your born with, OCD and many of those other ailments are something you develope.

@barkulator , frtw4428 said it all, and I will quote: "Only in the so-called "developed" world! Look at tribal peoples in the Third World. They're too busy gathering food and other resources to help their families and their communities; they don't have time to give a shit about OCD, ADHD, or some other ailment. "
PungiFungi 1 year ago
@PungiFungi But they do have mental problems just like people in Western cultures. It's a stretch to say poorer people are happier and that Westerners are indulged. Schizophrenia is universal and the % of sufferers is constant. Bipolar was known in the ancient world. Psychosis was seen in Haiti after the quake. We can't say "just look at those people" because we don't know them, and I'll bet your source doesn't know any either. Just saying.
Agreed that modern, civilized life sucks tho.
barkulator 1 year ago
@barkulator , I would said that our Western materialistic society give people the opportunity to nurture these mental problems. When your mind is no longer gearing toward thinking about simple survival, it is now free to think about other nonsensical things.

@PungiFungi But they have time for canbalism, fighting other tribes, and all other sorts of bad stuff. Being in a 3rd world or developed country doesn`t change the fact that there are bad ppl, mentally ill ppl, and very good ppl. Ppl are ppl regardless of wealth.
paisleyyama 1 year ago
@paisleyyama , yes, all of the "bad stuff" in order to survive. They don't have time for this frivolous nonsense.
PungiFungi 1 year ago
@PungiFungi I think they have their own kind of frivolous or harmful nonsense b/c they are humans and not all the "bad stuff" is for survival. Some is purely from a bad heart. Canabalism isn`t for survival it is about dominance and revenge. Some cruel tribal rituals aren`t about survival either.

Now once in a while he asks me for some thing I threw away, but it was worth it.

it's so hard because telling a hoarder to stop collecting stuff and to get rid of it is like telling an anorexic to just eat- it doesn't work, it doesn't solve the problem. But at the same time, you can't allow someone to be drastically underweight just like you can't allow someone to live in all that filth- but I think they need to move slower, give him time to understand why he hoards, because at that rate, he'll just start it again

I'm not sure society should be so quick to judge and label people with seemingly odd behaviors. Maybe they should be seen as having a special talent instead. I would think a museum archive specialist, or warehouse director is just like this.
Probewitch 1 year ago 2
@Probewitch yeah but these people aren't keeping thiings for their value, they are afraid of losing things because they think it will open them up to emotional problems
NegativeNick 1 year ago
I don't know about judging but if a person is miserable due to there behaivor than it is a problem
philosophermike 1 year ago
@Probewitch I feel where you are going there, but it's not correct. Those people and their jobs and personalities are all organized around ORGANIZING and meticulously preserving and keeping objects and things in a very very very very very clean, organized, and very tidy and meticulously preserved fashion. They would NEVER EVER allow things to be treated or kept in the ways hoarders to. It's like, same spectrum, OPPOSITE END.

WillBackbone 2 years ago
I went in commando style when we moved. My mother is a compulsive hoarder. I hate it. And didnt want to bring it with us, so I threw it away. We fight every day about her precious junk that got threw away. She will never forget it. She has a problem.
MelissaAsAriel 2 years ago
It is just GARBAGE, but they see it as some kind of precious item with all this value.. I dont understand. It is a disorder. But I dont suggest commando style unless you dont have to live with it afterwards. I have to sneak to throw away anything, and she will GO THROUGH the garbage and pull things back out and bring it in again.

LOL! My sisters a hoarder. More than anything I want to go in and just chuck her stuff out! She'd have a melt down, tantrum, freak out, and ya know what? In two months her house would be re cluttered. Perhaps institutionalization is the answer.
cuddleyduddley 2 years ago
Well I can tell you from being a landlord it's an issue. I co-own several apartment buildings that were built in the late 90's and they are in a very nice part of a small town about an hour from L. A. & we have had issues with this. We inspect apartments at least once per year & are in them for maintenance and repairs from time to time. We have had to evict several people and you would not have a clue that they were this way when you leased the apt to them, They can ruin an apartment with junk.
WillBackbone 2 years ago
That would be a lot easier, but they'd have a rebound collection growing stronger. I do think some should be hospitalized because of food poisoning (remember the lady with the 'organic' and perfect looking pumpkin that was rotten to the core) or when hoarding body fluids. That has gone too far. Oh yeah..dead bodies of pets.
iraqidolphin 2 years ago 6
That food could easily make you sick. The dead animals can cause really bad health issues as well. Hoarding one thing or another is bad but when it affects their health it is an entirely different issue. You are right in your post.
