  • very Motown

  • jazz is the older shred

  • What guitar are you using?

  • I really want to get into playing jazz. I'm only 15 and no practically no music theory :S I've been playing for 4/5 years now. If anyone has got any pointers as to where to start, what to listen to, or even just to explain some basic music theory, please pm me :)

  • Your really good man! Hope that can be one day!

  • what is the best guitar to support jazz sound??

  • Epiphone ES 175?

  • Utterly lovely! Great!

  • ahhh teach meeeeee

  • Epiphone ES 175?

  • hey man, Could you tell me the best way to practice jazz? At the moment I'm kinda just playing arpeggios over the chords in autumn leaves, but i don't really know how to make it sound jazzy or anything.

  • can someone tell me where i should begin.i want to become a great smooth jazz guitarist. i have no idea where to begin

  • sounds to me like you are plating a couple of minor line forms

very cool hard to master them

  • can someone tell me where i should begin. i am a rock guitarist who knows a little jazz, i play bossa nova pretty well but now i want to become a great smooth jazz guitarist. i have no idea where to begin, what to study, who to listen too and how to listen to music to absorb what i hear. please give me some tips people. PM me.

  • thanks sir! awesome playing :D

  • what scale please?

  • jazz is so hard to play but u did really good

  • Is this Dorian?

  • Man I love improvising, took me while to get a hang of and do well, but now that i'm getting better at it , it's just awesome.

And this was just great, sweet, sweet patterns.

  • From your hands to God's ears!

  • @DeathMetalDeth This was fully improvised. Of course, I incorporated a few licks and phrases that I already knew but I had no idea how the whole solo was going to come out in the end. Some of what I played, I actually surprised myself. That's what's so great about improvising. Thanks for the compliments. Check out my site if you want to improve. Believe me, it doesn't take a genius. Just hard work and dedication.

  • Wow this is amazing. I want to know how to do this but where do i start

  • Do Jazz have any specific scale that would always sound good when improvised ? Or we have to follow the chord shape ?

  • lol this is amazing and sounds great. Would be interested to hear how it sounds through a tube amp. Do you have videos of you playing with tangiable amps? This made me very happy cheers !!

  • I suck balls at jazz, its kind of depressing. You're amazing though :D

  • for some reason i keep getting jazz and blues mixed up...'start listenin' WTF! WHAT IS THIS waiiiiiiittt i see whats going on XD haha... its great though

  • i dont understand what 2-5-1-6 means. could you explain it?

  • @Ins4n3Guit4rist it's the number note in a scale. for example, if you were to solo over c using this progression, the chords roughly would be d, g, c, a. in this case, you would use the notes in the f major scale.

  • @Ins4n3Guit4rist It may be the chord progression pattern. I'm a 13 year old intermediate but an example would be in C major it would be D-G-C-A. However it all depends on the key your in...

  • @Ins4n3Guit4rist Do you understand music theory? Because if you do then this is pretty simple to learn. the numbers are relative to the chords in the key he is playing in. He's playing in F so 2-5-1-6 are the chords: Gm7-C7-FMaj7-Dm7

  • @Ins4n3Guit4rist in key of C

    C = 1 Dm = 2 Em = 3 F = 4 G = 5 Am = 6 B dim = 7

same goes to the other keys as well..

  • @Ins4n3Guit4rist its the progression he's using

  • great playing, how do you get that sound from the amp??

  • dude i want to learn how to do this im tired of traditional dorian rock/ blues and harmonic minor soloing....

  • its so sooothing

  • LOVE the sound, but then again i've always love the sound of a good jazz guitar!

  • What scale do you use for jazz?

  • im not gonna lie i liked this

  • I play rock and classic now i wanna jazz

  • Nice solo, I really enjoyed to listen and I am going to can play the same

  • What scale is that?

  • Very good you should try using a little space though

  • pleasure to listen to this.!

  • Been playing rock and classical rock guitar for a few years, but jazz interests me alot.

any tips on where to start? scales, songs, tabs wtv ;)

  • What exercise did you use to get comfortable playing F major all around the neck?

  • Cool playing man like it

  • Great solo , maybe one day i can do a solo so smooth like this , maybe one day I will be able to pull off a solo. . .

I Really liked it thanks for sharing.

  • thank god for jazz... makes doing homework more enjoyable :D

  • is there any way i can get this song!?!?!? i love this song/beat/tone/music!!! 2 thumbs up 4 real!!!

  • I LOVE THIS SONG!!!

  • HEY, SOUNDS GREAT WHAT AMP ARE YOU USING?

  • @PhillyGregA I wasn't using an amp, I was plugged directly into a tascam dp-02. Just a little reverb for improved tone.

    Leon

  • @learnjazzguitar THAT'S GREAT! I ONLY USE TUBES, BUT I FIND MYSELF WONDERING, IF EVERYONE IS USING SS; MAYBE IT'S TIME TO GET WITH THE PROGRAM. BUT, ALL THE CLASSIC TONES THAT BROUGHT US TO LOVE JAZZ GUITAR WERE RECORDED USING GLASS. HMMM?

  • @learnjazzguitar Hello I have a tascam dp-02 and I play jazz guitar what effect what that?

  • @learnjazzguitar

GOOD NORMANS BROWN AND BENSON IMITATION... IT HAS A BROWN AND BENSON COLOUR ... NICE

  • woah nice solo, i have to make up a jazz solo for this jazz song cant remember what its called, do you have any tips? ^^

  • @rockandgrunge Take a look at my website at learnjazzguitar(dot)com. Join my free email newsletter for tips.

    Leon

  • What kind of guitar are you using specifically?

  • @Dorasom It's a Michael Kelly. Velvet model archtop

  • Realy nice man, South UK here, feeling Ronny's influence here.

  • @bensharp9 thanks, I do enjoy Ronny's playing.

  • do you have to improvise over each individual chord in jazz music?

  • @ArniePyeInTheSky No, you can play the parent scale over any of the chords in a given key. For example, over Am7, can play a C Major scale since Am7 belongs the key of C. While your solo won't necessarily sound like your defining the sound of the chord you're playing over, it's a start and at least it won't sound like you're playing obviously wrong notes. The next step would be to incorporate arpeggios and substitutions to outline the chord changes for a more harmonically specific sound.

  • @learnjazzguitar hi, great song! but can you tell me the bass line and chord of the INTRO SONG of this video? or, actually how to create it. is it any scale theory, or just improvise? do you have a song like that? i got stress with this kind of song, but i really want to know how to play it. :D

i can imitate it (with hear it, over and over), but i can't improvise.

PS: sorry for my bad english :)

  • @learnjazzguitar on top of that you want to bust out more lydian/ myxolydian base outlines, main key is adding sound in a jazzy way, you can hear what hes doing. he has silence periods, and has his ins and outs with pops. Make sure you are busting out some 7th or 9th arpeggios mostly, or youll sound like a neo classical shredder. Try to play with the drummer more than any other instrument as well, have chromatics, and dont forget to mix non and diminished licks into harmonic modes.

  • this is great good job

  • i love metal but i never tought i'd fall in love with jazz to this is just so nice and smooth

  • love the guitars tone! (and the guitar)

  • I'm guessing this is all improvisation?

  • @metallicafan979 @metallicafan979 Yes, I did 2 takes on this recording. Of course, I am using some licks, phrases that I already know. That's what improvisation is: creative reorganization of melodies that you already know. That being said, after looking at the video I was a little surprised by some of the melodies that I played. Sometimes melodies come out that you didn't think you knew. That's what's so exciting about improvisation!

    Leon

  • @learnjazzguitar Yeah I'm just learning jazz guitar so im pretty new to all this stuff lol.I'll definetly subscribe though and see what i can learn from these videos.cheers!

  • What scales are you using primarily other than F major?

  • @jazzguitar2010 not nessecarly, he isn't actually playing in the key of F, saying that means that the rhythm guitar is playing in the key of F, hes just soloing on which ever notes are being played in the key of F by the rhythm guitar. Maybe he played a couple licks in the F major scale.

  • I love metal with all my heart but im feel no shame in saying that jazz is the most technical and advanced music on earth.

  • nice! this is the kind of jazz i can get into :D it reminds me of JC Penny music though hahaha is all smooth jazz like this? before this kind of music all i had ever heard from jazz was like swing type stuff

  • I WANT TO LEARN!!!

  • does anyone know how i can make such a backgroundmusic like in the video or were i can find backgroundmusic for jazzguitar. thanks

  • @ lilhomefight you can buy a loop pedal for your guitar like the boss RC-2 which is the one i use. it will record your own rhythm track you play and you can even add drum tracks to it right from the pedal ! its quite the pedal (Y)

  • want to learn some more jazz after i whatched this video :)

  • @LuXguitaR me too haha, im bummed now that i dropped it a couple years ago. talk about a feel for music!

  • what scales is the most common in jazz?

  • @LuXguitaR i would say blues or dorian

  • penotonic u mean ? and dorain yes.

  • Blues scales alot of the time

  • not really more like a dorian scale most the time with some blues in it penotoinc scale. jazz scale is way harder then a blues scale your fingers have to be far apart in blues your fingers are always close together.

  • Dorian is a mode, it's the second in the major scale. (so to play D Dorian it would really be a C major scale starting on the D) Jazz improvisation uses a lot more than just Dorian. All of the other 6 modes are fair game in Jazz. (heck, you can play any note you want as long as you resolve it correctly) There isn't a "Jazz Scale" unless you are talking about Real Melodic Minor, which is "Jazz Minor."

  • all scales are used in jazz

  • Awesome JOB !!

  • thank you !!! so more ideas now!

  • I think most guitarist habitually do a little thing with their mouth when the play. I purse my lips when i use my wah wah pedal. this guy mouths the rythm he plays on the runs.

  • lol i keep my mouth open roflol

  • yeah i purse my lips whenever i play too. but when i use wah i open my mouth as i press down so that it looks like im saying wah as the wah goes.

  • liked it alot, great tone a fantastic ideas.

  • i watch this vid like 5 times a day, u rock man

  • what's this guitar ???

  • which guitar does he use?

  • good

  • o my goodness,, damn he good,, i wish i can play like that,, keep it up,,

  • oh wow... that tone! Fantastic playing :)

  • Freggn Awesome.

  • your technique is unbeleivable

  • this brothas sick

  • Wow, what a rythmn in that playing.

  • Beautiful peice! What amp are you using?

  • what's the EQ like on his amp? Whenever I try to get a clean jazz sound, it always ends up being either low and bassy, or not smooth enough!

  • george benson esk. love it

  • omg so nice, mixolydian?

  • I'm going to be straight up honest here, i was in the mood for some cool jazz guitar, so i searched it up but i had this feeling i wouldnt find something that i was looking for, but dude, you just blew my mind because this is what i needed to hear, but just better. you are amazing!

  • 1:27 ~ 1:36 :D

  • Nice MUsic!

    Your Good!!

  • That Was Really Nice!

  • This makes me want to ride an elevator, or maybe go drink some overpriced coffee......

    nice solo dude.

  • LOL

  • Nice....

  • man thats nice and smooth

  • B.e.autiful solo

great job on it im tryin to get a jazz footpeddle so i can do something like this

  • Just beautiful...!!

  • Learn the basic jazz chord shapes (minor and major 7ths, and other jazz chords) then learn the scales, then soloing, BTW you'll want a VERY low gain amp, this guy's amp has NO gain on it naturally, which is rare, most amps (especially modern american amps) have gain (even with the 'gain' controll @ 0) thats how you get the jazz tone

  • this is really great! I favorited it.

  • very nice i enjoyed that

  • what i need is the tab.. plz plz

  • wow tom morello playing jazz guitar?nice

    hahahaha leon is great

  • LMFAO!!!!!!!!!!! That was gud!!!

  • i have those headphones nice but break easly

  • i think you should learn jazz chords first. once you get the hang of it, learn how to solo. :))

  • astounding

  • do the chords first,

  • incredible! I envy your talent

  • Very, Very Nice!!

  • wow! that was awsome. I'm more of a metal and screamo fan, but I like this smooth jazz stuff alot too! Thanx for posting

  • beautiful, simply beautiful

  • very sophisticated indeed, the music of the intellectual! im trying to learn all the modes and weird jazz chords but struggling to remember it all, what would say is the best way to get started on this style, thanks.

  • Great playing.

  • Hey NICE JOB!!! I got a question, next year ill be joining the jazz band but I dont know if my elec. guitar is equiped with jazz capability! I have an epiphone gibson special - guitar

and an amp thats 15 watts but it only has volume overdrive treble and bass knobs on it

Will this work for jazz music or not remember I'm also a little better than begginers but still entree level!!!

  • OMG,,, u are awesome!!

hope u cud set up a tutorial for some simple licks.. thx ^_^

  • u should be on tv or on the radio man ur a fucken talent

  • nice phrasing! You're a monster player. take a listen to my There Will Never Be Another You and tell me what you think

  • Thanks, Matt. You're a awesome player yourself!

    Leon

  • hey there I loved your improv throughout the whole video :) I was wonder about a few licks though and if you could do a lesson on mixing the blues and jazz together especially with licks like the ones at 00:58-1:02 that was an exceptionally beautiful lick and I love to learn licks like that and similar for improv work thanks :)

  • Hi, does 2-5-1-6 mean G-C-F-D the backing rythmn progression on keyboard?

are you combining different scales together, your scales are not linear like minor blues or modes?

what do they mean in singing and guitar by the term phrasing?

  • Dude, you are my hero for playing this type of jazz solo! can you recommend me any artists that have this type of solo that you play on this video? thanks.

  • try norman brown, george benson, jonathan butler... look them up on youtube to get a sample

  • i didnt read the info...

    lol

    yeah

  • this sounds like a norman brown song...

  • 5 *****

    gagi

  • damn i wish i played like that.

  • I enjoyed watching you play this. Really nice job!

  • This is great!

  • i used to play jazz now im in a hardcore/progressive band, and if it weren't for jazz i wouldn't be at guitar as i am today. its definately one of the best genres going around. jazz is something everyone should appreciate, especially with the garbage going around like techno and rap and all the pop crap they play on the radio. the concept of music is changing rapidly but this genre will never die.
