this is one of the great ,yet little known VH classics - Dave's low-growling "pain" stuff is over the top & a welcome break from the ordinary. Long live pre-1985 Van Halen !!!!
I have early Van Halen bar performances as well. The sound quality isnt that good but either respond or thumbs up if you'd be interested in hearing them
this version is amazing , its pretty loose which is great , this,DOA, LIGHT UP THE SKY or BIG TROUBLE wld of been a better fit then LITTLE DREAMER imo , ive also got a differant version of this and BIG TROUBLE???? any ideas on the differant versions?
Demo must be from 76 because VanHalen 1 was released in 78....and it may be the most powerful album released that year by any band. I mean, compared to the disco crap that long since has died, its hard to believe that you are listening to a 34 year old recording......will that album ever run out of legs?
I believe Gene Simmons put them on a tougher angle than Ted Templman did. I mean they were never a joke to listen to, but they made jokes with the music. This version of House of Pain has an awesome romantic approach from the band. Tough and gnarly as can be they are.
I used to have this on a vh boot called "Dressed to kill".
It was the 1977 Pasadena civic show plus some demos like this one that runs right into "running with the devil" and live versions of unrelesed tunes called "bullethead" & "down in flames".
The whole cd was one track meaning you could only fast forward the cd to get to other songs.
VH is best in the early dayz. dappling484 is right about tapping. Ed was not the first to use it! Steve Hackett of Genisis used tapping in the first three albums he recorded with them starting 1971, also Ed Van Halen claims Steve was his insparation to use the technique. Frank Zappa was a user of this technique before the almighty VH. This is just a few examples of players that used this technique before VH.
Even though this is far too processed and the lyrics are louder than the mix should allow Roth....this is FAR SUPERIOR to anything they have uncovered from the old days because this is showcasing the guitar tastefulness that i grew to expect and haven't seen from Eddie and his recycled licks he has used far to much...this stuff is far more taseful to the ear....and those car horns are the real deal intro to Running with the Devil...very innovated riffage pound for pound!!!

The three of them excluding the overepaid bass player were talented. I remember playing their 1st record back around 77 and they were way ahead of their time. Eddie got some of his tricks from jimmy page. such as hammer ons.

hammer ons had been a norm for a guitar player, tapping had been around since the fifties, look it up. (they require hammer ons).
