Well... I don't even play guitar. So my judging and preferences are based on my ears alone! And I do think that ranking musicians is difficult. Anyway, I think JP, for his technique, composition skills and "track-record" playing music are very hard to challenge. I mean, for example, I like 10 guitarists better then Clapton, but I would never say they are better musicians - the man invented electric guitar playing as we know it...

Govan could run rings around JP and the rest of any G3. Petrucci knows it himself..ask him..hell tell ya himself. Minnemann shreds portnoy as if he was a novice. Mangini was shitting in his pants when he tried out for DT cause he KNEW minnemann was the better musician. if minnemann really wanted it, he would have gotten the slot.

@powerbass11 Govan's actually pretty good but I think technically nobody gives Yngwie Malmsteen his full credit- probably because he's an asshole but that's besides the point. I think rating guitarists is a stupid waste of time either way, you sort of unconsciously prioritize a singular technique as sort of the "aryan master race" of techniques when there's so much to be learned from every one I don't even listen to death metal but I listen to Tosin Abasi and Amogh symphony on principle alone.
