  • This is amazing. I love the oberheim sounds! I'm really thinking of buying a oberheim 2 voice as a start!

  • Love this beast. My Matrix-12 had some issues that was going to cost nearly $2k to fix. So I considered selling it to a tech/dealer in NYC who would fix and sell it. What the heck: cash for a dead instrument. After dropping it off we talked about fixing vs. selling on the phone. I felt like I was selling my child. After a hefty panic attack, I coughed up the cash and had it fixed. I play it a bit almost every day, even if I don't need it for the sessions I'm doing at the time.

    Thanx Tom Oberhe

  • wtf !!! 8 voice.... sniffffffffffff

  • Did Patrick use that on Relayer?

  • @JIF882 No, he ordered it in 1976. He was planing to use it on the "Going for the one" album, but was replaced by Wakeman before he had the chance. If you listen to the first two minutes of "Time for change" from his second solo album "Out in the sun". You will hear what Patrick had intended to use as an intro for "Awaken".

  • Thanks for the demo Kevin. How are the voices split between the keyboard? I read that each voice can have a different timbre. The 9 lighted buttons - are those presets?

  • @NewShimmer It was split 4 on top/ 4 on the bottom. No stealing between if you play too many on a kybd. The lit buttons ARE presets. And yea, every SEM can be a completely different sound or as close as you can come duplicating 'em. Crazy wonderfulness. :) (one sem can be a dessert topping, the other a floor wax) ;-)

  • So great to this this mythic beast restored and being played again.

  • amazing,

  • Perhaps I should have sent you my FVS in July 2001 for fixing instead of where I did. They sat on it for 6 years before I pulled the plug on them. The instrument was worse off. Live and learn. You play better than you think. I hope you got a good price for the custom job. Thanks for posting the vid.

  • @kennykeyboard

Any "tech" that takes 6 years to finish something as small as an SEM isn't a tech.

They're a professional procrastinator. A real tech finishes their work.

It's integral to the job. Glad he's not a brain surgeon.

But if I can give any advice to people about choosing techs, find and use ones that don't have a dayjob or other source of income. As a client, you need the guy that equates eating to successful tech work. Sorry about your bad experiences. Thanks for the kind words too.

  • @Synthfool so how in the world do you decide between eating and keeping a synth as amazing as this? I know eating is important but man, a dual-manual 8 voice!?!?!?

  • Chocolate chip...The mad tunes smith...The smartest man I know...Kevin Lightner!

  • i liek the poly portamento at 4 10!

  • I would be thankful if you could answer a few questions.

    1. Did you use 2 SEM's each finger when playing chords?

    2. Or did you use 4 SEM's with your right on the top keyboard and 4 SEM's with your left hand on the bottom keyboard?

It would be very kind if you could tell me how the programs were set up from 1-8 (how many SEM's per finger especially, since I'm trying to figure out the difference in fatness comparing the 4-voice and 8-voice).

    Thanks,

    Billy

  • It was #2. Four SEMs per hand.

  • The mother of all polysynths! Nice improv Kevin:)

  • That thing is beautiful, Kevin! O_o
