  • love those scats

  • Check out Patti Austin's tribute CD to Ella. No one can replace Ella, but I sure have enjoyed listening to Patti's CD.

  • Simply the best! Thanks for the clip!

  • Ella Fitzgerald is one of the greatest jazz legends ever.

  • Superb clip. This is indeed from 1947/48. Thanks for posting!

  • This is around 1948 at the time Ray Brown was married too Ella .Ray left the Dizzy Gillespe Big Band to tour with Ella Trio.

  • Please, please, please post the full version!

  • from what i can gather this is from 1942...

  • SO FANATASTIC!!

  • what is she singing from :12 to :16?

  • ???

ever hear of the term "scat"?

and no thats not a dirty term. The music term.

  • yeah i've heard the team "scat". It basically seems to mean sing nonsense.

  • What a treasure this clip is!

  • Lot's more to it than that. It is not at all that simple.

  • she is just.......beyond words...

  • That my friends is pure joy... Ella, god I luv Ella !

  • scatting at its best

  • AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I SOOOOOO gotta learn this SONG

  • Effortlessly; Graceful; Classy; Poignantly; Captivating; Timeless... First Lady of Song, Ella Fitzgerald.

  • Wow this is very rare! It seems to me that this video was taken in the Downbeat club 52nd street? Look at google images:

Downbeat New York 1949 Ella Fitzgerald Herman Leonard!

  • Any of the great four - Fitzgerald, Vaughn, Holiday, Washington - are worth listening to at any time. I'm not choosy about one over the other.

  • I agree

  • Ella is amazing in this video clip. I have been looking for a video of this particular footage. If you have the full version, post it! Post all video clips you have of this recording. What year was this clip of How High The Moon recorded? Excellent, just too short. I want more, more, and more of the greatest Scat artist to ever walk the face of this earth! There will never be another like Ella Fitzgerald. They call her the first lady, but she should be titled the Queen OF Scat Queens.

  • Unfortunately this is the only clip I have and there wasn't any information attached to it.

  • I'm trying to figure it out....possibly 1945-1951 at least...I've seen photos of Ella in this dress and at this show...And Ray is there on the bass...she started dating him around 1946..By the mid-50s, she changed her hair and ceased to wear the hair pieces and up-do's that were all the rage in the 40s...

  • @kronk99 Was she married to Ray at this time? Billy Taylor, another American treasure, is on piano, but who is on drums?

  • @MusicMajesty ...Judging by the sound of her voice, the hair, and the costume with shoulder pads, I'd say this clip is early to mid 1940's. Also, I believe this clip was shot when she was still with Chick Webb's orchestra.
