  • Very intstructive as to the nature of war. They never reach the first lline of German trenches, and I think, that in the entire movie we never see a single enemy soldier. Yet we watch scores of men being killed. Kubrick is called a genius. That is what you may be called if you are not stupid and you wish to tell the truth. However, in America today, being what America is today, you may be riviled and shunned.

  • @tonygumbrell22 excuse typos should read: "instructive" and "line"

  • @tonygumbrell22

600.000 French and Germans have been killed at the battle of Verdun, all by artillery, they didn't see a single soldier from the other side.

  • @tonygumbrell22

    Damn straight.

  • War Horse, Paths of Glory, Passchendaele, Joyeux Noel and Gallipoli are my favourite world war 1 films. They all show the innocence of every side and the futile human cost of it all

  • Comment removed

  • If anyone has seen War Horse, you can tell Spielberg was heavily influenced by this movie(which I believe called it Kubrick's best) and this scene is particular

  • @getlikemc War Horse was a great movie but well not the best WW1 movie...not even close...

  • what could not be filmed would be the men in pieces, blown apart ,their parts buried in mud till the next barrage would uncover them, only to be buried yet again.missing in action meant there was not enough left of you to be identified.

  • Kubrick should have seriously done a film based on Sherman and his march to the Atlantic. No one has done a film based on this even.

  • @seans63lemansSD that acctually would have been good!

  • Not to mention France at the beginning of WW2 was still using mostly WW1 weapons.

  • @StonewallJackson26 And tactics. And yea I figured when you were arguing with fireeyed lol.

  • Stanley Kubrick does and amazing job here, portraying the futility of trench warfare

  • @berserker276 hey, hey, hey

  • @StonewallJackson26 Hi Krusty.

  • @berserker276 hi, Austin Powers.

  • @StonewallJackson26 No I'm more like.. Mr Burns lol.

  • @berserker276 Let me tell you man. I used to have small opinions of the French military. But after watching this clip and imagining what it would have been like trying to hold off a massive unified Germanic state from crushing your country into crumbs. I think my opinions have changed. The poor French Army was literally worn out and ground to a nub during this conflict. I understand why they made a deal with the Germans in WW2. They didn't want a repeat of this.

  • If those little sweethearts won't face German bullets, they'll face French ones!

  • Almost all countries in the world had a period of military glory - Lithuania, for God's sake, had an enormous slice of eastern Russia and the Ukraine in the 1300s. Any nation on earth, properly led, will do well. Problems arise when a nation is unable to adapt to changing times. The future of the US is not bright.

  • Kubrick, fuckin' amazing director, Kirk Douglas, fuckin' amazing actor, Paths of Glory, fuckin' amazing movie.

  • Kubrick was so ahead of his time. Amazing director :)

  • chrisM33, you know History for sure; totally agree. Let it be with the losers who think they know something...

  • brilliant- best war movie ever made. Might be one of the best films ever made too.

  • the beginning is like a fucking symphony of bombs

  • ChrisM knows his histoire.Only a fool underestimates another country's military.

  • Its a same movies with never again be made like this

  • Release date December 25, 1957

the film was not submitted to French censors, and was not shown in France until 1975, when moral codes had changed. In Germany, the film was not allowed to be shown for two years after its release to avoid any strain in relations with France. The film was also officially censored in Spain by the government of Francisco Franco for its anti-military content, and was not released in that country until 1986, 11 years after Franco's death.

  • @40390576 Your taste probably has something to do with your age/generation, but hey, different strokes.

  • MARAVILLOSO FILM!!!

  • um dos melhores filmes de guerra antigos..

  • Before Spielberg, before Stone, before Coppola, there was the immortal Stanley Kubrick giving us a no-holds barred look at the horror and futility of war. A true visionary and genius.

  • this movie is on TURNER CLASSIC MOVIES OR TCM on tuesday at 10:30 p.m est

  • what a fucking brilliant movie!!

  • Beret wearing surrender monkeys.

  • People who slag of french military history, KNOW fuck all about military history, stop making twats of yourselfs and go read up on how they dominated europe for so long, and how they have some of the greatest generals and leaders in history, im british and they were englands most feared rivals for most of our history, i totally respect them

  • @chrisM33 you respect the french because they once had a great military force? wtf?

  • @orEvil Wow yes hard to believe is it not ?. Guess what though, many people who follow and study military history DO admire countrys that fielded great armys, generals and leaders. Did not say i admire them killing people, but its part of human nature and history to fight, and for me and many others its both interesting and something to hold a certain respect for

  • @chrisM33 You respect a country because at some point in time they were able to dominate and kill other humans? You have some serious fucking problems.

  • @243pie How about you take your fucking sensitive fucking arse off a video that shows men being killed and go watch twilight or some other nice videos that you can enjoy and not worry about people respecting them because in there history they were real men and real warriors, something guys like you obviously cant and never will understand. And yes i admire france for having been invaded by germany in ww1 and felt sorry for them in ww2 where history and the advancement of war had passed them by.

  • @chrisM33 How misguided and deluded you are there are many things one can respect a country for. Perhaps culture, people, even respect for being invaded and having a hard time in history fine. BUT to respect them for the sole reason that they were able to kill many human beings because they had the most killing power is something that is NOT respectable. What about the country that faced this oppression and had much of its population slaughtered because France and its pride. Pathetic.

  • @chrisM33 Who can ignore the Normans (who conquered Anglo-Saxon England), the forces of Louis XIV or Napoleon I?...it took a Blenheim and a Waterloo to prevent France from taking over Europe as well as the Americas. Only the Prussians had a higher advantage at some points in continental Europe.

  • @chrisM33 Thank you, I am glad to hear someone else saying this. Many foolish ignorant Americans constantly put down the French military, yet France has one of the best military records of any nation and they helped the US win our independence, even if we did repay them in the World Wars.

  • @chrisM33 In my eyes I count France as one of the most powerful military history in well all of history

  • @chrisM33 Well I think the message of this movie (really in every war movie) is the futility of sacrifice and finally the way it looks good in statistics by the command.

  • @chrisM33 They didn't really dominate WW1 or WW2 though.

  • At the somme you were going to get shot to bits in the main with machine guns bullets, at verdun you were going to be blown to pieces by artillery, BOTH were brutal and both hopefully will never occur again

  • No Glory for heroes is an award winning short film that looks the psychological affects ww1 had on soldiers and how it would affect many for the rest of their lives!!

  • hes walking like nothin is happening lol

  • @40390576

I like work from both but I'd say Spielberg has been responsible for a lot more rubbish, either as a producer or director. I'll pick quality over quantity every time.

  • the sheer irrationality of this movie makes its so absurd...

  • @40390576 The question was rhetorical.

  • so the normal attackers get huge rifles a the guy in charge gets a pistol.

  • A brilliant cinematic masterpiece.

  • a movie with great characters throughout.......this along with the writing make this movie a great one

  • I am not a fan of war movies, but I have recommended Paths of Glory to others who ended up loving it too. Every few years I'll see it again and I'm still moved by it. Incredible.

  • @marzipanthequeen I would probably categorize it as an ' anti-war ' movie.

  • @kermsroomy Good point.

  • 3 French generals disliked it

  • @Hirfel

WEll, it seems like the whole French govt disliked it back in 1957 for the movie was unbanned in France in 1975 only.

  • This is like Saving Private Ryan for WWI as far as this clip goes. I am curious though, if you stop it at 4:14 or 4:15, did an alien blow up in this movie?

  • @henrobrice That's a French soldier.

  • @henrobrice Compared to this film, I would rate ' Saving Private Ryan ' about a 3.

  • Maybe the best infantry battle scene of WWI in all of cinema.Have never seen the whole movie, might have to now.

  • thats a pretty tidy trench

  • So many people died to fight in this war and in the end... After 20 years needed to redone everything.

  • WWI: Lions led by donkeys.

  • Behold, the price of freedom.

  • The best war scene I have ever seen. Kubrick's magic at work. Here we see what should be seen: the FEAR and TERROR in those soldiers' eyes...

Spielberg (and many others), DO learn how it's done ;)

  • @Kikunis Spielberg couldn't hold Kubrick's jock strap.

  • Dummy blows up at 4:13 HA!

  • the whistle dosnt sound right the ww1 ones had a certain high pitch

  • the trench is very innacurate they used to be filled with shit and all kinds of horrible things

  • Weapons sounds like laser blasters from star wars, wtf?

  • nobody demonstrates the brutality like kubrick exept maybee xbox, sony.

  • Why do his ranks are on his arms instead of shoulders?

  • @Boromir33 Because they french were a little different than the rest. Why else did they win the war?

Too bad they couldn't do the same in 1939...

  • Stanley Kubricks ability to play with light, while also including sound as a primary component to all his scenes, makes this one of the most realistic and hard hitting battles of defeat in motion picture history. The steady-cam shot alone, going down the trench line before the failed charge, lets us know that something very bad is about to happen. There will never be any one like Stanley Kubrick.

  • Kubrick is the best

  • It appears that the attack falters and fails before we sight a single enemy soldier. In fact I don't remember seeing a single German soldier during the entire movie. Kubrik is great movie maker and this is him at his best. Want to go to a war? If this doesn't help you overcome it, I guess you just have to go to a war.

  • that shot from 2:05 to 2:07 is sooo epic

  • The second half is intentionally muddled, kubrick shows random acts of violence and brutality, all with false bravado, that is shoved back in their faces,in the last half hour of the film.Overpowering, yet confused soldiers shooting aimlessly at an unseen enemy. That WAS vietnam, its still the best vietnam segment,in any vietnam film i have seen.THAT was the perfect metaphor. The latter kubrick films are alot less subtle, which i like.Paths of glory is great, but still fairly manipulative.

  • @TheGatorfan93 For me the most memorable bits of FMJ are the beginning and the end with the sniper, the middle part is for me unmemorable disjointed and puts me in mind of a quote from a couple of Vietnam veterans as an attempt to transplant 2001 A Space Odyssey into a Vietnam war film, for me the best Nam film is Go Tell The Spartans

As for Paths Of Glory being manipulative, I would call it unpretentous and straight to the point which is something I prefer in my war films.

  • @TheGatorfan93 Although I'll admit I'm a bit biased about Kubrick's later films,

my last two favorite ones of his would probably have to be Barry Lyndon

     and The Shining.

  • I really want to get the Blu-Ray Criterion edition of Paths Of Glory that just came out.

  • @cha5 i can give you the criterion bluray compressed to dvdr for you to download from a spanish forum

  • @theachtungtree Thanks but I already bought the Criterion Blu-ray

  • @cha5 cool, just bought the criterion blu-ray version of black narcissus...really awesome, you must watch it

  • My brother-in-law's dad fought in those trenches

  • this is what i was expecting full metal jacket to be

  • @Monchi2006 Full Metal Jacket, I think, was more at first meant to be somewhat of a black comedy, at least with the training camp parts, because although it was very realistic and true, it was also funny too.

  • Very sad scene to watch. With that being said, It is amazing that these men are able to run carrying those BALLS!

  • One of his greatest roles in one of the greatest movies ever.

  • Actually these scene was made in Munich at bavaria film studios and the "soldiers" were 300 German policemen, each of them with his individual "kill zone".

  • Whoever the camera operator was during those telephoto shots as Kirk Douglas moves across the battlefield has a crazy steady hand. Absolutely stunning.

  • Stanley Kubrick is amazing.

  • @d0dgeball

sure Mister Kubrick was an amazing "réalisateur" :-)

  • If that a goof or did soldiers actually charge across no mans land in full backpacks?

    Seems like a unnecessary burden.

  • As a soldier this the Great War is the one that i would never fight in. Just aimlessly wandering into a wall of lead.... So pointless and wasteful.

  • @chrisbristol As a soldier you don't have a choice. Soldiers follow orders. They eat government issue food, sleep on government issue cots, wear government issue gear... Stand when ordered to stand, sit when ordered to sit, fight when ordered to fight.

Officers will always be making the decision to send men to certain death. Most particularly the brass. To a general an infantry man is just a government issue body, expendable... just like X amount of flour or bullets.

  • in my opinion this most have been one of the hardest wars to go through, 1000's of casualties just to gain a 100 yards...

  • You are wrong. The "great scene" from Paths of Glory is definately the ending where the captured german girl sings "The Faithful Hussar".

  • How many times do I have to tell you? The canteen cup goes ONTOP of the blanet roll - look at the other guys!!

  • just like that.....they go out and charge just like that, if there was anyone there who didn't already shit their pants I'd call that guy dead

  • This film and "Cross of iron" are in many ways very similar as well being excellent!

  • they never even made it to the german trench

  • Sure is a clean trench alright, hahaha.

  • i watch this ..and i remember why i were a poppy..

  • @highriseripper A poppy...?

  • They had laser guns in WW1?

  • @charliejason21 no...it was a cheap sound effect for the machine gun.

  • @charliejason21 You don't know much about history, do you? Everyone had ray guns and laser guns back then, but they were taken away by the aliens when they landed just before WW2 began. Everyone tries to hide the truth, but those who know, know. ZAP, ZAP, ZAP.... ZING!

  • @charliejason21 Yep it was a secret experiment carried out by the Imperial German High Command as you see Kiaser Willy made a deal with the men of Uranius to give him advanced tec for german sasages then Germany lost they say the Kiaser ran to Holland he did not the Uraniusians took him and probed him constantley hitler wanted to get in on the fun and Stalin but they did not like them.

  • Are those exsplosion grenades or dynamite, thanks and i really need to know for school, so plz answer : )

  • @DarthBob8 artillery shells most likely i doubt with all the shelling back and forth dynamite would be effective and those germans probably couldnt throw grenades thant far, also explosion would be different

    hop that helps

  • WW1 was the first and only war where more soldiers were killed via artillery than small arms fire.

  • What battle are they at?

  • I think Hamburger Hill is another great war film.

Paths of Glory also kicks ass.

  • Stalingrad is the best WW2 movie, hands down.

  • The countdown gives me the chills.

  • WWI : heroïcal french army !

But so much dead... 1 397 800 killed french soldiers, Horrible war !

  • @nemessos To this day the First Battle of the Somme remains the bloodiest battle in human history. It began on July 1, 1916 and ended in mid-November four months later. It was fought primarily between British and German troops. The staggering death toll was 1,200,000. No ground was gained by either side. Nine million men died during World War I.

  • @JackKangaroo1 The british captured 75 square miles of ground, brought the even bloodier battle of Verdun to a halt and forced the Germans to withdraw troops from the Eastern front...two of the main aims of the whole attack

  • @craigus6788 The consensus of opinion among historians is that British and French objectives at the Somme were not attained. The British gained 2 miles at deepest points of penetration at a cost of 420,000 men. Verdun lasted longer and cost far fewer lives, so how was it "bloodier" than the Somme? The Germans withdrew short distances in order to strategically reform their defenses. 96 years later history still declares it to have been a disastrous stalemate that cost more than a million lives.

  • @HAMLETSGHOST100 depends on which casualty count you take for Verdun, you have a point about the objectives but in my (personal) opinion the offensive achieved what the key objectives were, alibet at a great cost in the lives of brave men

  • @HAMLETSGHOST100

"so how was it "bloodier" than the Somme?"

Maybe it wasn't "bloodier", but far more "horrorful". Just read some accounts of French or German soldiers who have been there, and you'll see that, no matter how high the casualties amount was, Verdun was much more horrible than the Somme.

  • @HAMLETSGHOST100

"Verdun lasted longer and cost far fewer lives, so how was it "bloodier" than the Somme?"

    Both were bloody.

Somme: British around 100.000 dead (commonwealth include), French around 50.000, German around 150.000 = around 300.000

Verdun: French around 160.000 dead, German around 140.000 dead = around 300.000

Total Somme: around 1.000.000 casualties (around 700.000 wounded, 300.000 deads)

Total Verdun: around 800.000 casualties (around 500.000 wounded, 300.000 deads)

  • @craigus6788

"the British [...] brought the even bloodier battle of Verdun to a halt "

And how ? There not even a single British soldier in Verdun, only French soldiers.

  • @Briselance Yes that is correct, however there was also a German army at Verdun surprisingly, who was forced to transfer troops and heavy guns to counter the allies attack on the somme. therefore bringing the German offensive to a halt. To be fair it could be argued that this just began the second half of the battle with the french counter attack

  • @nemessos

thank you also for WWII, when you did not forget about us in 1945 when Britain betrayed and thank you for help in 1939... it is so horrible that Britain stopped you when Soviets came to Poland

  • @nemessos

    See again your stats

The stats for the Frencn Army was counted again and updated several years ago

it is actually about 1.700.000 soldiers killed for France in the WW1...

On a full population of about 39.000.000 unhabitants in this time !!!

No Nation in the History made such bigger sacrifices that France during the WW1!! (to compare the bigger number of soldiers killed for the USA during one of their wars is 350.000 during the WW2 & 126.000 during the WW1)

  • @cumbas the CSA during the American Civil War had equivalent casualties

  • @SmittytheGreatOne83

you dare to speak about stats for an "internal" war and thus you add the deaths of the all sides to made a final statistic ?!! LOL

if I made the same thing for all the Civil wars in France since 1500 years (and not 200) OMG !!!

& in this case & your "logic" let's add also the deaths of all sides for all wars like the... WW1 and there OMG also !!!

    ...

Your answer is unlogical & stupid...

  • @cumbas I said only one side, get it straight... The CSA, not BOTH side, really man pay attention. The misconception that it was an internal war is yours not mine.

Maybe you should stop and read more carefully next time before you make assinine statements and attempt to ridicule those more knowledgeable than you. Have a nice day...

  • @SmittytheGreatOne83

    1a)

    ??

You are not only a little guy stupid & arrogant sucker & American who want always have the Glory in all even if the truth is vs that & vs him (it is in your fanatic education, actually in this fact you are the perfect heir of the anglo-saxon english-roastbeefs) but you are also like the english-roastbeefs the worst liar who mod all facts of History & tell more lies just to search this "glory" !!

  • @SmittytheGreatOne83

    2a)

Because I dont know where you found your stats on your Civil War (so an interior war only and not a proof of really sacrifices of a whole Nation for his like vs a foreigners ennemies, thus this not count) but the true stats are for the North 360 000 deaths about & for the South 260 000 deaths about

    ...

Far, very far of the 1 700 000 soldiers dead for the French during the WW1 even if you want to add the 2 sides of your Civil War...

  • @SmittytheGreatOne83

    3a)

& like I said France is not 200 years of wars (& I speak about true wars for the life of a Nation vs a foreigners ennemis & not an interior war) but almost 2000 years!!

The French built France, surrounded by ennemies in all borders, with the forces of their swords !!

  • @SmittytheGreatOne83

    4a-end)

& we dont have any lessons to receive about that & the sacrifices for that by any countries especially by a country who exist since 200 years only & MORE who would not exist without the big help of France for his creation 200 years ago !!

So now scuse me but usually I dont lost my time with a non-educated & retarded liar fanatic like you who dont like the French just because they are French

  • This scene of a "butchery charg" during the WW1 & this movie is nice and great sure but if you want to see a greater scene about a charg and the butchery of the WW1 look at this :

    /watch?v=6KI3GcOQGWg

  • @SmittytheGreatOne83

The CSA during the American civil war has 1.700.000 soldiers dead??? Are you joking??

CSA: 260.000 dead (all the war), USA: 360.000 dead (all the war)

Total deads for all the American civil war (both sides): around 600.000

  • @Freez57fr trying to explain things to some people just isn't worth the effort...

  • @nemessos

French army win some war? i MEAN that THEY WIN.

  • This is a great film, but it is eclipsed by the original "All Quiet on the Western Front."

  • Um.. they are totally different films..
