You said that consuming He Shou Wu on a daily basis would provide all zinc one needs. You also said that 100 grams of this herb contains 42 mg. Considering that 30 mg is recommended for optimal health, I don't see how your recommendation holds true.
@SecretsOfLongevity, why don't you relisten to a few seconds of your video starting at 2:58.
I want to add that the recommended daily dose of a couple of grams of He Shou Wu will contain about 1 gram of zinc, which makes it an insignificant source of this mineral. Moreover, the bio-availability of zinc is higher in meats than in plants.
@humanyoda Yeah I'm not suggesting anyone consume just he shou wu for their zinc, it's implied as part of a diet which is why I list more foods after it. In a full diet (and I recommend the use of animal foods now too, this video is 2 years old) if you add he shou wu to it's plenty.
If 100 grams = 0.220462262 pounds, and I pay $4 for 1 pound of he shou wu at a Chinese herb store, I get around 8-10, maybe more if I'm doing lower doses, uses out of the 1 pound. that meets the RDA for zinc.
@SecretsOfLongevity The few grams of he shou wu dose you're probably thinking of is probably the extract which is concentrated up to 10x that of whole he shou wu.
@SecretsOfLongevity, yes, I was thinking of the extract form, I guess. What's sold at the Hyperion and another online store is recommended to be taken at a couple of gram dosages.
So, when you buy this herb at the Chinese herb store, do you cook it in a black been sauce for hours before you consume it?
@SecretsOfLongevity, oh, so you get the prepared version of the herb for $4 per pound?! Is that a normal price in Chinese stores? I thought what I'd found at Swanson Vitamins was good, but this price beats hands down... if we're comparing comparable things.
@humanyoda The best quality online source IMO is mountain rose herbs. You can get the whole herb at around $9 a pound at the second link in the drop down menu. It's certified organic whereas the Chinese store he shou wu is not.
@SecretsOfLongevity, the mountain rose store only lists either root or root powder, not whole herb. Aren't just roots consumed, anyway? Would the powder have to be simmered for a long time or could it just be dissolved in hot water?
And how much would this root powder have to be taken? The same half teaspoon?
And another question... According to the info page, "Fo-Ti is a mild stimulant to estrogen production in women". Does it have the same effect in men?
@humanyoda It's the root. By whole herb I mean that you have to extract it in some way as opposed to an extract which you can use as is. I don't recommend the root powder as it's shelf life is shorter and you'd need a coffee filter every time you made tea instead of pouring the tea through a strainer. He shou wu helps produce testosterone with its high zinc content. The estrogenic effect comes from the black bean sauce that it is simmered in to prepare the root which has a very minimal effect.
hi. Hey I just bought some ho shou wu from Hyperion herb but it's not black I saw a memeber's video that says if it is light tan is just a laxative? i'm missing something??
@SecretsOfLongevity Cures Fo ti is better. Look for that. Curing of Fo-Ti has been found to increase the phosphates ,presumably lecithin. My husband started having grey hair at 25!!!. Now he is regularly taking cured fo ti, pantothenic acid and copper. will keep you posted on that once we get our desired results.Thank you for sharing!!!. God Bless you. May more and more people achieve health and happiness.
My concern with He Shou Wu is that it contains anthraquinones which are "known to cause cancer in the state of California" (I read this on the box of a product that I bought from Chinatown). I want to use it but I'm worried about this statement. What do you think of this?
@mtl77733 That's referring to the types of anthraquinones that are used as dyes. Others are actually anti-cancer and anti-fungal, anti-microbial etc. There's no need for concern about whole food products unless they have synthetic additives. Isolated compounds are what's dangerous, not a substance naturally found in a tonic herb that has been safely used for over 2,000 years. Hope that helps :)
I get a few greys when I don't sleep enough, at least that's when I notice it, does that make sense? In my biz sleep comes @ a premium so I really watch what I eat but just bought a 16 ounce bottle of tincture and plan to sleep more. That's my biggest stress right now when I do sleep the greys seem to disappear.am I crazy? Or does this equate? By the way your vids are just fine words and all
@eddiedjr716 I do it's in the description box for this video. The link to my article has links to both the extract that I use and the whole herb which I liek to use as well when wanting to make tea from it.
@vizion24 Probably the best all around herb would be cordyceps. I wrote an article about it here: secrets-of-longevity-in-humans (dot) com (forward slash) cordyceps-fungus (dot) html
@LorenzoLFM Pill form can be great if you want to take it that way. what varies is the potency and quality of the extract that has been pressed into a pill or encapsulated. Generally you get what you pay for. The $10 bottle of conventional Fo-Ti you find in the health food store probably won't do all that much for you, but is probably more noticeable than nothing at all!
@billtheman100 It needs to be made into either a tea and extract or into a tincture. It can definitely be taken everyday for an infinite amount of time :)
I just looked up Fo-Ti Root (He Shou Wu) on Vitacost and it's actually pretty inexpensive: $3.99 for 100 1200mg capsules. Nice! haha I'm only 26, but I think I may add it to my supplement regimen this year. IDK. I'll definitely tell my 52 year old mom about it, though.
If you check out my latest video I talk about how you can get a free bag of he shou wu extract. It's a limited time offer however so check it out soon!
Nice! I like your videos a lot because you give amazing info, But I do have to say that I def. feel benefits from meat products. I dont eat it raw yet but pretty close. As Daniel Vitalis says, we need to eat of the four kingdoms. Plant, Animal,Bacteria, and Fungus. And as Weston Price found out. All healthy peoples eat some meat.
@SCOTTDAVIDSON32 I personally do not agree with Daniel Vitalis. There is absolutely no reason that we should be eating any animal products whatsoever. I have been a healthy vegan for 22 years and a raw foodist vegan for 3 with no animal products and I look atleast ten years younger than all of my friends. I also drink plenty of purified water enhanced with magnets and prill beads for added nutrition and absorption.
Well it seems as tho many long term Vegans end up going back to some animal products. Must be a reason for it. Also I dont believe there are any peoples you can look at around the world who were a vegan society. Must also be a reason.
Well, I think you have your infomation wrong. There are a small number of people who go back to eating animal products because they don't understand that veganism is a conviction, a way of life and a healthier diet for the planet. I can point you to hundreds of vegans that have been living the same lifestyle as me for longer.
So are you saying that plant life is not equal to animal life? Why is it ok to kill a plant but not an animal? It can be argued that plants are actually more conscious than animals. And the plants that you consume are not even vegitarian themselves- if you understand soil. I applaud you for doing what you think is right but you should be open to new information.
There are a lot of vegans who haven't had to turn to animal products, including raw foodists. Most of the fruitarians did turn to animal products or died prematurely because of it. Brian Clement is an example of someone who has been eating a raw food vegan diet for 40 years.
Plants and animals are quite different. If one wishes to get philosophical about it, most major spiritual traditions realize there is a difference between animsls and plants. The word "sentient" means this. It includes...
...all animals, humans, bugs etc. Plants, although living cannot be said to be the sentient. There are also parts of plants used that don't kill the plants and in fact help it grow better. If you eat fruit (which the plant wants you to do) you are helping spread the seed of the plant. If you take some leaves from a plant, you prune it and it can grow new and stronger leaves in it's place.
The top 8 longevity cultures around the world eat vegan or nearly vegan with 5% max being from animals.
Loma Linda California. They have found that the vegans there on average live the longest, the vegetarians second and the ones consuming meat third.
The Hunzans and Vilcabambans traditionally ate a FRACTION of 1% of their diet from animal products. From the research being done today we now know that this small amount would have no impact on the body in terms of providing enough "missing nutrients" if they even existed.
In an isolated culture with a limited range of foods, it might have been...
... possible to develop some deficiencies which would lead to the belief that one had to occasionally consume animal products. We now have the technology and advanced blood analysis to be able to determine what people are deficient in (no matter what diet you eat you will always develop deficiencies of something in the long run) and provide an individually tailored herbal, superfood or whole food supplement regime.
dude, come on. You should know better than to pick a fight over plants an animals with a 20+ year vegan. Ha Ha. Do your homework. If you're going to compare plants to animals then you obviously have no problem eating your neighbor's dog or cat right? Hmm. Sure, with A1 steak sauce. There is a tremendous difference between P&A starting with a central nervous system. Animals have them plants don't. Look up Motility and Heterotrophic for more.
A high nutrient calorie diet along with calorie restriction / plenty of water / and plenty of excercise seem to be the best way to age gracefully. It seems to me like all these programs coming out that require you to pay money is a rip off! The more you analyze foods and try to get this and that the less healthy you will become. Being obsessed with anti-aging is probably just as dangerous as drinking a glass of soda! :-)
If you've never purchased one of these programs how would you know? I'm not saying I endorse them, but usually people put out a program because they have valuable information to share.
The act of analyzing something doesn't make you unhealthy. Worrying or stressing about something does. If a persons career takes them down a path of studying nutrition, this is not a bad thing! They learn things that they can then share with others. Same with anti-aging research. Passion does not = obsession.
What do you think of Wild Salmon and Sardines? They are loaded with rna/dna. Also astaxanthin and dmae are found in salmon..So why not include those anti-aging foods into the diet instead of eating exclusively 100% raw vegan? It has been shown that a 100% raw vegan diet will fail long term. Just check out Dr. Bass!
The only nutrient that you can't get from plants is cholesterol. All these other nutrients are either made by the body in sufficient amounts (suc has DMAE, the amount in fish is minimal) or originally come from plant sources.
Astanxanthin is made by algae which the fish eat. We can skip the toxic/expensive fish and go straight to the source. It just so happens that algae is alkalizing to the body, doesn't go rancid as quickly as fish, contains plenty of RNA and DNA and is eco-friendly.
Dr. Bass is one researcher. I never base my decisions of diet and lifestyle choice by one persons opinion. His research isn't even that well known or widely published. There's plenty of evidence to support the benefits of a plant based diet, even over the long term.
