yep - hanging out in groups is WAY overrated. the things that end up happening are just kind of disappointing. too many folks have a herd mentality. maybe i need to find a different group... but i'm pretty sure it'll be the same. i have a much better time chilling at home and taking in one of your videos. :) man, i'm a youtube loser. LOL
Your bit of 'blah, blah, blah' was just watched on the other side of the world by someone you'll most never likely meet; someone with assuredly a completely different background and life experience, yet it was enjoyed thoroughly. Thank you for giving me an insight into the workings of your mind. I feel the same about socialising too.
@metalorg, I think it's because he was previously talking about the pack-animal mentality and closing in for the kill we as a culture do on celebrities.
Brando, what you are trying to say is that Gary Coleman got a shitty deal. He not only got his money squandered by his parents, but after different strokes his stardom pretty much burned out and he fell under the curse of the "ex child star", and ended up having to do demeaning reality shows and anything he could to make a buck - like so many other child stars.
The culture of Hollywood is just that: nothing more and nothing less. It's self-contained for the most part...and then amplified by the media. It is useless, for the most part. The quest for peace and justice is not exemplified by Hollywood...and the exceptions to this rule are rather rare, but they do exist, although very rare in American cinema overall. Personally, I prefer foreign films, without the bravado involved.
Shit! I thought you emigrated to Alpha Centauri or some shit. Nice to see you're still hanging out on planet Earth. BTW Frank Frazetta died too. I know you're a nerd so you know who that is.
Gary Coleman was also in Buck Rogers! All of my memories of him are from my childhood and I think I am better for them. I will always remember him in Diff'rent strokes and Buck Rogers as that quirky kid who made me laugh.
Sobering video. I think we enjoy tearing people down because we can be curious, unkind, and unfeeling. On the other hand, we have a confusing dichotomy. We love others, we are kind to them and we care about them. I guess the strongest people overcome things like jealousy and are simply happy for others without the need to tear them down. (continued)
I was slightly disappointed that Coleman's death seemed overshadowed by Hoppers. Both had/ have their place. But I feel like it was representative of Coleman's life as a whole- to be eclipsed. And why weren't people as kind to him when he was alive?
Great video. I don't care if it's "not quite pointless" just the way you explain things and express your thoughts is amazing. Love it love it love it.
I hated Coleman and celebrities in general, so I never set them up for anything. So when they die, I just don't give a shit about them like the rest of the world probably would. I am a wolf that is already full. Some people though love a celebrity and when they fall, they chew them out. That is bull shit.
I tend to think that our tendency to like or dislike being in groups is mostly genetic. Also, our tendency to introduce or not introduce friends with other friends is also genetic.
Gary did indeed get screwed a bit. I guess we all get screwed a bit, some more than others. Hopefully behind all the hollywood gossip reports and news clips he had some moments that made life worth the hard times.
i must say, what you say is true. i agree with what you said about celebrities and how it is us who put them up there, only for us to tear them down again. i love the way you put it bro, very poetic, and most of all factual. and yes, a lot of bullshit happens when there's a lot of people haha, but that's our nature, and really there's nothing "wrong" with it either. just a fact of life ;-)
Interesting perspective from his NYT obituary. Now Gary Coleman is as dead as the minstrel show. As memes change TV just didn't need Gary as a non-threatening black character.
Virginia Heffernan wrote in The New York Times in 2006, quoting Mr. Coleman’s signature line. “Arnold was supposed to be shrewd and nobody’s fool, but also misguided; after learning his lessons, he was easily tamed and cuddled.” Ms. Heffernan called the characterization a form of latter-day minstrelsy.
yea the tragedy of GC. You helped me realize how bad it really was for him, and unjustified and undeserved. Different Strokes was a major part of the 1980s and noone is ever gonna forget that!! xx
Fame seems to magnify ones state of existence. The scrutiny is something very difficult to survive. I've tried to make video responses to this. YOu seem like a poet. To me, you're like a poet. You suffer through empathy. Perhaps you WANT to love people. That's different from loving people. We want. We want to be a member of something better than ourselves, perhaps. I dunno. Thanks for the blah, blah. Sometimes we could use a little more of it.
@Cristofer7 Thanks man. I really appreciated your perspective. Your humanity is greatly appreciate. I've mused at times, and still consider my musings rambling. Perhaps I'll gain the courage you have to simply post and hope someone sees a value in it. Great vid.
I must confess I have a little trouble mustering up much sympathy for child actors that fall out of fashion. Not because they didn't get a bum rap, they did, but there are untold multitudes of people that nobody ever heard of that have gotten and continue to get even more of a raw deal. That's just how life is, c'est la vie. The universe doesn't owe anyone a decent life.
Good to see a video from you Chris! Interesting analysis of celebrities. Is it wrong to throw a kid onto a tv show like that? In a way Gary really never stood a chance.

Poor Gary Coleman got a raw deal.
I dont really understand the connection with that and getting older makes you less social because there's lots of bullshit in groups.
