Great talk - I'm in the same boat as you. Education must pertain to the students' real worlds and answer their curiosities. You should have been at barcampicr today with Vik - he had some great ideas also!
At the Online Learning PD Institute we watched Sir Ken Robinson's animated RSA talk this morning, and Shawn carries on Robinson's ideas in a real classroom. I will now share this with the Institute teachers on the last day.
I have been raving about this talk, and you Shawn, since I saw this video about a week ago. I think you're amazing, and seeing you reminds me to be grateful for the passionate teacher's I DID have in school. I hope your ideas are getting the attention they deserve, and I hope you don't stop at just this TED talk. While I respect and honor your commitment to your students, I humbly invite you to consider that you have a higher calling, that you can change the face of education in this country.
Just spent an hour with Matt discussing how we might use some of your ideas in the 12th grade as a pilot program. marchhare is right in that logistics take some figuring - but we'll figure it out... we alwasy do. Bringing some ideas from the other TEDxEastsidePrep speakers as well.
The issue of content preparation in 9-12 STEM courses is huge. It's important and it MUST involve the principals at the schools because the majority of them believe if a teacher has an endorsement, the teacher is capable. It is generally not true in rural states and definitely not true in most rural districts. STEM courses are not the same as courses where everyone has everyday experience. That said, creating projects does not require grad school. A BS is enough. Activity is what's imprtnt.
I wonder, though, how many teachers at my own school would be proficient enough in their field(s) to be good advisors to students with these projects, you know? On some level, we'd be making high school like graduate school.
Another issue might be students who don't really know what they want to do or are excited about. I give open-ended projects in my classes and most sit there with their mouths open until I suggest topics.
Really great ideas, but it seems logistics may not be so simple.
Awesome

Perhaps my favorite ted talk. Real practical proposal. Not lots of platitudes and stories like ken robinson.

What the hell is wrong with the audience!
I expected the room to erupt in laughter and applause at so many points, not excluding 16:12

I guess I'm just thinking bigger picture and how we could get it to "change the system" because I like the idea so much.
