It makes me proud to say that i own a working dreamcast. It is one of the best systems ever made along with the N64 and PS2. Sony was dicks to dreamcast so they can hype the PS2 but you gotta remember that the PS2 is also an amazing system.
the reason i think this game was so good was because it was like a rpg/action/adventure/fighter/puzzle/strategy type genre its in a class of its own...it had tons of fighting moves, mini games and collectibles lol forklift races and who doesnt like playing those sega saturn games at the youarcade or the hazuki residence =P ...sooo many games in this one game!! my brother hates rpgs or any game that takes a long time to beat but even he loves the game dreamcast here i come! i am gona buy one

After 10 years of waiting, now I think it's kinda cool that we'll probably never see the end to Shenmue.. I hate goodbyes.. So it's like neverending story, you can imagine yourself. It adds to the mystic feel of the game. That game is legendary and will always be. But for me the main appeal of the game is the soundtrack, I think it is phenomenal in its quality and it really makes the game so touching..

Never played this but it's pretty much a spiritual prequel to the yakuza series (also made by sega, who HAVENT gone bust!). Even the graphics look the same as well as the gameplay/ focus on immersive story and world/minigames etc. Definitely try Yakuza series if you liked this. Haha even the little chase sequences are copied. Yakuza probably a lot lower budget though and smaller :(. Pity everyone likes crap games like mario instead of quality high budget worlds like this.
Just because Shenmue had amazing graphics and realism, and super high production values doesn't mean that it was remotely fun. I play games for fun, not for hyper-realism. My real life has enough realism in it thank you very much :P
@Commentator9000 Shenmue made me feel like I was the main character in a deep way, unlike any other game to date. It just offers an imersion into it's world, following a greatly scripted story that delivers emotion like very few, but at the same time a sense of liberty.
Imo more games should be like this...an escape to another reality, not just all the senseless shooting in modern FPS...

Go to a local bootsale you can get some great bargains for stupid amounts of money. i bought a dreamcast with sonic adventure, crazy taxi, ready 2 rumble boxing and fighting force 2. came with 2 controllers and leads but no vmus and all i payed was £5!!!!
This game has the exact same problem of the Dreamcast (The greates game console ever launched), it's TOO AHEAD OF IT'S TIME, and people can't seem to adapt to so much... What a shame. Plus you have to have in mind that big companies like Sony did everything they could to stop Dreamcast's hype so their PS2 sold well... R.I.P. Dreamcast, just like many famous people, you were killed for being too good and ahead of your time.
they didn't release it because of sales. the first game had a budget of $70 million. To make that back everyone who had a dreamcast would have had to buy atleast 2 copies.
Gta 3 would have been good for example if every video you find (I think there are 100 videos to find) had some small video clip of past games made by the company who made the gta series

I think the game is ok, played it for like 1 hour and its hard to find where you should go, there are no maps what so ever...for example right now I have to find a a person who brike his back who lives in a house with blue walls....hm.. all I do is talk to random people on the street nd hope someone will tell me what to do.......very SLOW gamw
I picked up this game for an hour and left it for a week as I thought it was too slow as well. Picked it up one weekend and as I worked out what I was doing and the gradual story-line this is unbelievably addictive gameplay. I almost want to visit Japan now because of this game! It's like living another life.

Sega has a tendency to do this kind of thing. If they'd hype and advertise in the US like most other companies, and like they do in Japan, they may actually make money back. Yakuza 3 isn't looking like it's gonna get brought over, and Shenmue 3 will probably never happen, as sad as that is.

I have no idea why this game didn't make a hit!!!!!!????? This game was so epic, why were Dreamcasts not a hit either!!??? It was a great console on a legendary game! Why didn't it make a hit when Dreamcasts graphics and overall performance was better than most consoles around at that time, and Shenmue was most certainly the best game around at that time!!
Well most people owned a ps1. There were a lot of games for. Dreamcast has a lot of good games but not as much. There were not as much little companys that were making games on dreamcast. That is what i mean by third party support. More people would have the system i the shells would been full of different games and a lot of good ones..
this game would have been sick as hell if it didn't have to load each time i went into a building. i cant tell you how many minutes i had to wait just getting into a bar; only to accidentally leave and then reenter and waste time
dont get me wrong i loved the game, you gave a great review. but I just couldn't stand that he game has 3 cds and still in the same place, and it ended in a cliffhanger (I had the game before pt 2 came out) it took me 6 months to beat that game and when it was going off all I could say was "thats it?, thats it?!" kinda of a let down I'd say.

Sega has a tendency to do this kind of thing. If they'd hype and advertise in the US like most other companies, and like they do in Japan, they may actually make money back. Yakuza 3 isn't looking like it's gonna get brought over, and Shenmue 3 will probably never happen, as sad as that is.

it is a great game, im glad i had shemue 2 on dreamcast version they spoke in japanese, not english crap acting version,
there was so much to do in this game,
i wish new yakuza would come to ps3 in europe, and translated, cause its similar to this, guess its never coming, like shenmue 3, if i would be billionare, i would give them all the money they needed to make shenmue 3 or maby dreamcast 2!!.

I have no idea why this game didn't make a hit!!!!!!????? This game was so epic, why were Dreamcasts not a hit either!!??? It was a great console on a legendary game! Why didn't it make a hit when Dreamcasts graphics and overall performance was better than most consoles around at that time, and Shenmue was most certainly the best game around at that time!!

Well most people owned a ps1. There were a lot of games for. Dreamcast has a lot of good games but not as much. There were not as much little companys that were making games on dreamcast. That is what i mean by third party support. More people would have the system i the shells would been full of different games and a lot of good ones..

Anyway, Microsoft owns the Shenmue license so they are the ones who are going to host it if anyone.
And I'm sorry but even though I own a PS3, I know Sony wouldn't ever host this franchise and they've consistently mishandled downloadable games.
PS: You can own and enjoy a PS3 without hating everything else.
(I also doubt Wii's virtual console could technically handle emulating it)

this game would have been sick as hell if it didn't have to load each time i went into a building. i cant tell you how many minutes i had to wait just getting into a bar; only to accidentally leave and then reenter and waste time

dont get me wrong i loved the game, you gave a great review. but I just couldn't stand that he game has 3 cds and still in the same place, and it ended in a cliffhanger (I had the game before pt 2 came out) it took me 6 months to beat that game and when it was going off all I could say was "thats it?, thats it?!" kinda of a let down I'd say.
