Roxie has been played by less-than-stellar singers before. Ann Reinking was brilliant in the role, and while she used to have a great voice, it was extremely raspy and worn when she played Roxie, however, she WAS Roxie. It was a great fit.
From what I hear, Simpson was a smash in London, where they gave her a standing ovation-- rare for any American theatre actor to receive that kind of appreciation over there. I'd like to have seen Ashlee's Roxie.

While Musicals are the more popular of the two, Broadway is made up of both stage plays and musicals. Example: Chicago/Mamma Mia are musicals, Death of a Salesman/Equus are stage plays.

The actresses who usually play Elphaba are good but that doesn't mean that the role is good. Hmm.. I'm actually not that familiar with her. All of the Elphabas I have heard have had out of this world vocals but I think the only truly great actresses who have ever played the role has been Ana Gasteyer and Idina Menzel.

Kerry Ellis and Stephanie J Block both have great voices but again that's not what theatre is about. They aren't very good actresses. Kerry isn't into the character enough and has weird phrasing and Stephanie over-emotes. The German Elphaba (I forget her actual name) is good. She comes quite close to Menzel and Gasteyer.

The war cry shouldn't sound pure. Elphaba isn't singing an opera aria she is becoming the Wicked Witch of the West. The script notes it as a triumphant cry, it should sound raspy and almost yelled. If you listen to Idina she delivers it perfectly.

well i didn't mean opera pure i just meant that she sang it with ease & it sounded amazing. & 2 be honest I think idina has the WORST vocals of any elphaba. her raspy screaming sounds horrendous. At these rehearsals, one has to hold back on the vocal, or it will be GONE by performance time. Also many of the dance moves are walked through or done in small segments. We usually don't do all of it straight through until maybe once before dress, and not always that.
I wish people would think before they post: "Would i say this in real life, when i am not hiding behind my computer?" I think Comment World would be a LOT different! :-)
Firstly, Ashlee only had a Nose Job. Second she is NOT Lip Syching here. As you can see she says "OK! Wrong lyrics!" xD Deaf much? She gives London a bad name? She got GREAT reviews from EVERYONE for her take on it moron. The West End is the second most famous stage shows in the world. She wanted to do it in London because at the time, Usher was on the Broadway one. Do some research before you talk shit.
what a shame that these talented celebs are taking these parts away from people who want so badly to be stage actors..who pound the pavement and constantly audition and are waiting tables to pay their rent...and then talentless little Ashlee Simpson gets the part. Beautiful.

not the last show, as i have seen it tonight, and its the 24th.... well i didn't mean opera pure i just meant that she sang it with ease & it sounded amazing. & 2 be honest I think idina has the WORST vocals of any elphaba. her raspy screaming sounds horrendous. I loved her in RENT & The wild party, but as elphaba the music is just a little too hard. if thats the way she was supposed 2 sound don't you think they'd direct all of them 2 sing that way. a triumphant cry doesn't mean raspy and yelled. it means powerful & confident. & hers sounds painful and forced.

Oh, for god's sake, Ashlee had a nose job. That's it. The rest is all her. And, she can dance-she was accepted into the American Ballet theatre. Good for her, that she's doing so well.

Yuck, really. She's awful. Whoever cast her without an audition is a bad bad man. This ruined my morning. Amateurs from college theatre put in better performances and character development than whatever she thinks that was.
Also yes, I think that the plastic surgery thing is irrelevant and they should keep it about Chicago. And her and jessica don't need to be competitive because Jessica's horrible too. She can't act or sing either.

At these rehearsals, one has to hold back on the vocal, or it will be GONE by performance time. Also many of the dance moves are walked through or done in small segments. We usually don't do all of it straight through until maybe once before dress, and not always that.
I wish people would think before they post: "Would i say this in real life, when i am not hiding behind my computer?" I think Comment World would be a LOT different! :-)

Firstly, Ashlee only had a Nose Job. Second she is NOT Lip Syching here. As you can see she says "OK! Wrong lyrics!" xD Deaf much? She gives London a bad name? She got GREAT reviews from EVERYONE for her take on it moron. The West End is the second most famous stage shows in the world. She wanted to do it in London because at the time, Usher was on the Broadway one. Do some research before you talk shit.

not the last show, as i have seen it tonight, and its the 24th.... Ashlee was acting really well, danicing was okay, her singing was cool, too (Im being objective here), but her nose isnt real, thats true as well :-p but I must say Chicago was great, although the role is a little bit too big for her. But she performed well!

I'm guessing they hired her for Chicago cos they thought she was good enough for the job. It wouldn't be a publicity thing cos she's really not that well known over here at all. Question to those who seem to hate her or whatever, why did you bother searching for and/or watching the video if you don't like her? As for the West End, it may not be as big as Broadway but its just as good and just as credible.
