Rolling Stone just sealed their fate as a pop music industry ho. The new top ten list is a cryin shame, and the judges are beyond the pale, but for a few bright stars like Warren Hayes - who belongs way above Jack WHITE and some of the other wankers on the 'players' list! Skydog earned his place and certainly hasn't been eclipsed by any of those guys.
I have live at the Filmore dble album-- I beleive this is the version on it-- I remember the tune note for note--it really couldnt be that close and not be the version you know? I think its the version on that album-- wonder if the harp player is from Wet Willie and those guys--they were all from the same neck of the woods ,,,
at 2:33 the look on Butch Trucks , like he is totally Pissed because he Knows Wolfgang has Fucked up the sound system and Greg's Mic plus half the band equipment is off line dead- it takes the house sound crew over 6 minutes to get everything on line & powered up correctly - what a pisser playing a major Gig , and the sound is for shit- Poor Butch
Thanks for getting this video, its so fucking awesome to see these guys at there best, shame about the quality of sound and video! but still really cool to watch.
I was at this concert when I lived on Long Island. What a concert! Never heard of them before, I thought they were a country band opening for Johnny Winter who was the headliner. If you hear the loud whistle in the background some of that may be me.
Duane is awesome, but there should never be a list of the greatest guitar players. That is strictly opinion, and Rolling stone's opinion don't mean shit.
While I agree with you about the rating systems, I do think that Rolling Stone has a better view than the Grammy's or Idol or any other group of bozos. Plus they lined up with my desert island list. That's all.
Agreed-that Rolling Stone list of "100 greatest guitarists" did not include Rory Gallagher or Albert King, but did include Neil Young and Joan Jett, for God's sake!
no kidding they left alex lifeson off the list of the 100 most influential guitarists and placed jack white above eddie van halen.fucking clueless i buy relix now.
What else needs to be said, 6stringdave? I'll tell you what else needs to be said. "Lists" are juvenile and belong in sports, not music. As for Rolling Stone; they put Justin Timberlake on it's cover every six months. What else needs to be said, indeed.
It's always difficult to compare musicians in the "soul" category when comparing their performances on the same song, since the original performer will in general always be perceived as having more soul than the proceeding performer. In Derek's own music, I sense a lot of soul emanating from him, particularly when you consider his age. Arguably, Duane at 25 was the most gifted musician of his era, and may never be excelled in his musical genre.
I personally think that Duane has much more soul in his playing than Derek. I mean Derek's got the talent amazing technical ability but as far as soul in his playing I don't think he quite has the soul of Duane also (Jimi and Eric) not to say he doesn't have any,he's a brilliant player just there's some things that set people apart
Thom jammed part-time on harp with the Allmans, not an official member. He is still around in Sarasota Florida, I believe. He may be not be on Wiki but google his name for other sites with info.
@craigplaysbass the brothers used Tom Duchette he is unfortunately cut from alot the music on the original fillmore east double lp, simply because of time limitations
if you get the re-release of the original livetracks you get to hear alot of Tom's haro solo's that were cut out....real good work...i wonder if Tom is still around would live to read an interview of his experience performing as the 7th brother on those historical tracks..
@craigplaysbass the harmonica player's name is Thom Doucette. He was never considered a full-time member of the band but he did play alongside them for several of their more famous shows such as Fillmore East (obviously) and the Atlanta Pop Festival.
I wonder if Gregg, Butch, Jaimoe or Dickey ever watch these old shows from 1970-1971 on youtube and go "I remember that" or just get that feeling of excitement or sadness about Duane and Berry.
probably not... but the kids might... ;) man, they were my favorite back then... so good to watch this! Berry Oakley was an inspiration for me to play bass! Saw them play at the Watkins Glen Summer Jam with the Dead and the Band. lol... it rained that weekend, too!
@greatsilentwatcher .....I finally found someone that was there, I hitch hiked 160 miles to go see that concert, although I basically never got to 'see' them, I had the best time of my life, I bought that black/white poster there that read "Watkins Glen '73" In '93 they played at the Greek in Los Angeles, I'd long since moved there, and got them to sign the poster, Jaimo wrote "I hope you can see this one".
@vinegaroon1 Hi...problem is editing. Whoever edited the film or tape was not tuned in to the important things. Truly a shame. Great to have this video, for sure.
Bill Graham was as great as the musicians he put on the stage of that classic theater. As for slide gee-tar, there's Duane Allman, Johnny Winter and then there's everyone else.
This was from a PBS special about the FIllmore East and the Byrds, Van Morrison, Albert King and Sha Na Na were also on it. The Allmans were cut out of the broadcast either because there wasn't enough time to show them as they were fairly unknown outside the South while Duane was alive otr they may have been cut because reg's vocal mike was on the fritz for most of their ste. Bill Graham did more than anyone else to make them known, having them play both Fillmores many times as a middle act.
And they didn't forget Graham's help. When inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame, Dickey Betts devoted a significant part of his remarks to thanking him for the exposure that he gave the band and for saying from the stage that they were the best band in the country. Betts thought it an exaggeration but noted that when Graham spoke, people in the industry took notice.
All these Duane clips are too cool. I wish someone would post the Allman Brothers on the Midnight Special.
Watching these I am reminded how clueless the directors were back then. Duane rips through two solos and they show Dickey and Butch instead. I still don't understand that.
I went to the Fillmore East many times and it was the best rock hall ever! Bill Graham presented the best shows with the best sound and there wasn't a bad seat in the house. The shows were not just on weekends and the ticket prices were $3.50, $4.50 and $5.50 which was NOT a lot of money even then to see the likes of Hendrix, Duane, Johnny & Edgar, Sly, Janis and anyone else who was great.
It's good to be old! Actually I wish I was born 10 years earlier (I'm 53 now) so I could've seen Buddy Holly, Eddie Cochran and all those other 50s cool cats! Johnny Winter is a good friend of mine and he remembers all the 50s stuff and said he wished he was older so he could've seen Robert Johnson, Blind Lemon Jefferson and all those guys. I guess we're never satisfied, but I'm glad I saw the cool 60s and 70s people and there was no better place than the Fillmore to see them!
its true, we may never be satisfied, but still i think i wish i was born a long time ago, cause im 19yo an i damn wish i could have, once in my live, seen the allman brothers band playing 20m from my seat :c
The cameraman didn't know what was going on, that's why. Probably some jackass from the suburbs who knew jack about blues, the Allmans, slide or lead guitars, etc.
It was the only time Bill Graham allowed cameras into the Fillmore East, the famous Hendrix video is bootleg footage taken from the sound booth. Either the Bill Graham estate or the Allman estate will not allow this footage to be cleaned up and digitized, it is also repeatedly removed from YouTube for copyright violations so get it while you can. The whole taping was broadcast live 9/23/70 and rebroadcast only once as a tribute to Bill Graham.
Isn't the Allman estate controlled primarily by Gregg Allman? I can't see any reason why Duane's daughter wouldn't want to cash in right now? In the book Skydog she said that she will be writing a book about Duane Allman, herself.
Wish you could have been there, too. The Fillmore was the best venue ever -- not to mention the times were the best ever as well! Was at the Fillmore for practically every Friday night late show from 69 through closing.
Picture a venue the size of an old movie theater (which the Fillmore East was at one time). Each Friday and Saturday night there were two shows--an early and a late. Tickets were around $12.Imagine that.Late shows could run until 5 a.m. You were in a crowd of peace loving, pot smoking music lovers.I don't recall one single incident of trouble at any show.Second Avenue and Sixth Street.I could wax nostalgic on this for hours.
AHH the 70's when 'heads were cool people and crank was an old man next door. Americans loved each other more then and were MUCH more tolerant than now. TOO much diversity has changed all that though. Light up and chill out and let the love flow. And go to work the next day and get back home and DO IT AGAIN..thats what I'm sayin...
You are right about Americans loving each other more. That's for sure. People were just much more tolerant. Could have had something to do with the weed. Whatever works!
Thanks for your comments. I'd just add a few corrections and additions: From what I've read, tickets were $3.50 upper balcony, $4.50 mezzanine and rear orchestra, and $5.50 front orchestra. The capacity of the Fillmore East was 2830, a medium-sized movie palace built in 1926 as the Commodore. By '70-'71, the drugs were getting harder in the East Village (as in the Haight-Ashbury out west) and violent crime was on the increase as the city descended into the economic decline of the 1970s.
@aarfeld When it first opened, It used to be $3.00 for balcony, $4.00 for Mezz and rear orch and $5.00 for front. Usually, they would do two shows on Friday and two on Saturday. I saw Traffic for the first time there and ended going to at least 70 plus shows - got the programs to prove it. It was sad at the end because the East Village had become more hard drug and crime ridden. The "hippies" became free loaders who wanted Graham to put on freeshows every weekend. I miss the good early days
@1blastman: The same thing happened in San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury district: the hippie utopian dreams disolved in the early '70s as hard drugs and the crime associated with them ran rampant through that commmunity. It's a shame that Graham or the two theater owners who followed him couldn't keep it open. If they had it would today be a beloved historic theater like the Beacon.
Really? I would say Duane's skills on the guitar where far superior - if he lived it would not have even been a discussion I think. And I love Clapton - but he is no Duane, nor Jimi.
I read somewhere that Cameron Crowe based the Stillwater band on the ABB. Boy you can really see it in this video.."Russell Hammond" (Billy Crudup) looks like Dickie.
There is nothing officially released of this show. I got this from a VCD that was made from a VHS tape of this show. There is another version on an unofficial DVD called "Allman Brothers Band Vol. 1 - Duane & Berry." I found that version after I had uploaded all of these videos, and I didn't feel like changing it. The quality is only slightly better, if at all.
In my opinion... Duane allman was much better than Jimi Hendrix.

@mamadeb1123 There needs to be a "Fillmore East Reunion" of those still alive and kickin' who made it to the Fillmore for so many of those weekends.

I was at this show!! Thanks for the great memories. Duane was the best guitarist I have ever seen besides Clapton.

I wish I could have been there. Twenty years before my time though...

Really? I would say Duane's skills on the guitar where far superior - if he lived it would not have even been a discussion I think. And I love Clapton - but he is no Duane, nor Jimi.

I read somewhere that Cameron Crowe based the Stillwater band on the ABB. Boy you can really see it in this video.."Russell Hammond" (Billy Crudup) looks like Dickie.

whats the deal, is there any dvd of this show?

There is nothing officially released of this show. I got this from a VCD that was made from a VHS tape of this show. There is another version on an unofficial DVD called "Allman Brothers Band Vol. 1 - Duane & Berry." I found that version after I had uploaded all of these videos, and I didn't feel like changing it. The quality is only slightly better, if at all.
