  • CHILLS, CHILLS, CHILLS UP N DOWN MY SPINE AND ITS 85 DEGREES IN HERE.

  • @cake0278 That was how I felt the first time I heard Mahalia. Since then I've been a huge fan!

  • I've watched a lot of huge choirs perform this in different variations and absolutely no one comes close to this woman, who single-handedly tops them all by just standing there :D. It's such an amazingly powerful and energetic performance.

  • Questa è una regina del canto...

  • The story of Jericho is about people trying to oppose the Almighty God in battle. We are all walls of Jericho around each other.... humans. But with God we can each be Joshua fitting the battle of Jericho around us. better sing along this lady..

  • Joshua Fit the battle of cherry cola lol

  • it's very very good

  • amazing!!! you can call it grace...

  • Look in the Bible under JOSHUA 6:21-27 it says God told Joshua to destroy the entire city of Jericho and kill men, women, teenagers and infants with the sword.

Why are people singing about this terrible event?

  • @caketheory ew really? that's pretty fucked up. I keep saying a lot of beautiful music comes out of gospel, but what a terrible shame it is that so many people have to look to imaginary sources for powerful inspiration instead of things that actually matter in life like love, family and friendship. and to top it off this one is about mass murder? that's just gross. well she sings amazing though.

  • @caketheory I'm a muslim, and I'm not entirely sure if we believe in the story of Jericho, but I know that I like this song when anyone sings this because it is epic and catchy, lol. I'm going to sing it in a very formal performance whose name I recall not. I am a musician (I do composing, singing, instruments and working on learning how to DJ), but all this music that I learn is going to be applyed when I become an islamic performer, with varied-genre music about islam.

  • I defy anyone to watch this and not get chills down their spine. Mahalia is fabulous!

  • ¿Existirá diferencia entre este canto gospel y la adaptación que se hace en México por "The Black Jeans"? La interpretación anexa corresponde a "Rockstalgia", en Querétaro: youtube.com/watch?v=njpY_tauR6g

  • back when artists where apreciated for their talent, not for how they looked

  • And now she sings for Heaven's choir... classic in a time this country didn't want to have black people on their tvs!

  • I just love the way her voice sounds. its has so much mean in it.

  • thankyou on thanksgiving mahalia

  • this song is kinda catchy

  • nat king cole şu klipte yer almışsın ya ustam daha bi tatlı dinledim yemin ederim. keşke senin gibi reyizler sonsuza kadar yaşayabilseydi.

  • gotta love cherry cola!

  • OMG OMG OMG !

  • Never understand how there can be people who felt like clicking "dislike" on a video like this. Racists? Anti-religious types? Deaf and didn't like the video quality?

  • thanks for the upload

    therefor thumbs up :)

  • wow, nat king cole had a conk?

  • I LOVE HER!!!

  • Yes Lord! Thank you for sending Mahalia to this earth!

  • I'm out of words to express how much i like ya voice. I fell lucky to listen to ya songs.. Moreover i like you more as you used ya potentialities to praise God....

  • This is just beautiful. I'm singing this song in choir and this song is just amazing.

  • Praise be to God in the highest for allowing precious Mahalia Jackson to walk among man kind! We don't deserve people like this.

  • The power of suggestion: if I say that: Joshua drinks a bottle of cherry cola instead of the proper lyric of Joshua wins the battle of Jericho, then you will hear the silly lyric as you listen to the song!

  • Çok iyi

  • CLICK ON: disccentury, GOSPEL MUSIC, NEVER SEEN

  • /watch?v=XHGaspcujBA&feature=channel_video_title

  • boğaz içi grubu daha güzel söylüyor

  • beautiful voice .

  • Mahalia, I thank you for your passion. Whether you choose to 'believe' or not, the voice is beyond question. An incredible talent that believers and non believers can appreciate.

  • You know this song is about Joshua killing every child, woman and man in Jericho? Every infant, every young girl and every young boy were hacked to death by Joshua and his army.

She has a nice voice, but I don't think she read her Bible before she agreed to sing about the glory of killing kids.

  • @fredsfredX I think she read the bible with more than just her eyes. What God does is always good, just because man can't understand doesn't mean otherwise. Time and time again time has changed mans understanding of God's plan

  • Она - королева!!!

  • She makes me wanna jump around I love her and may god bless her soul some more

  • Female pop singers are not rated on how good they sing but how close they can approximate what Mahalia Jackson did 75 years before, and I'm pretty sure Mahalia did not use auto-tune.

  • google ı açıp yazmaya üşeniyorum bu kadın nat king cole un karısı mı acaba

    ne enfes bir sestir.

  • @childrenofsoros harbiden nasıl olmuş o amk. ne yetenekliyim.

  • Mahalia Jackson set the standard for gospel singers. Her voice was truly anointed!! God used her in a mighty way!

  • @TwinCities16 If you think that this singing is good, then just you wait till we are in the promised land and the angels of the Lord are singing His praises and Glory.

Praise and glory to our precious Lord Jesus Christ.

  • when this great woman sang OUR LORDS PRAYER .. it brings tears to my eyes and it gives me a heavenly feeling

  • heard her back in the day, she was amazing. at some point in her life, she devoted her life to singing gospel and would not longer sing secular songs.

  • No one like her.

  • Hey, I’m a young artist, & I would really appreciate it if everyone would check out my cover of Michael Bublé’s “You’re Nobody till Somebody Loves You.” Although I’m knowledgeable that Michael Bublé was not the first to record the song, my version was inspired by his rendition, nonetheless. I promise you that you will not regret giving my version of the song a listen, & it will truly knock you off of your feet! So please listen & enjoy! Thanks!

  • That's a real good singer. Not like Katy Perry who is famous for her awful virtual computer noise!

  • Omygoodness when she says hallelujah it gives me chills!!

  • lets go fight

  • STILL UNMATCHED! SHE IS THE PROTOTYPE FOR GOSPEL SINGERS. INCREDIBLE. THE FABULOUS FANTASIA IS SET TO PORTRAY HER IN A FILM BASED ON HER LIFE.

  • Still lovin' you...more and more!!! :)

  • The walls came tumbling down on 24 people...

  • Wow!!! Loved it and I am certain those that disliked it was just because they need glasses and missed the right button. How could you not enjoy that powerful voice and message.

  • I sang this song acapella with my 3 friends when we were 13-15, I had no idea then that it was a song with such history. We had a great teacher that taught it. Fantastic!

  • THE GOSPEL QUEEN !!!!!!!

  • Thanks so much for this as i have never seen it! I didn't know that he had a show. What a graceful person he seems to be. And Mahalia well she is something else and beyond!

  • i lova it ! it;s awsome

  • Absolutely wonderful!

  • Beautiful.

  • My aunt, my dads sister ,knew her personally.in LA .My aunt was white, she told me she was one of the nicest ladies she had ever met. My aunt just died this last year at age 98 and she told me stories my whole life of how people in the business wouldn't talk to her or touch her because she was black. it is truly shocking to see someone refer to her as a fat black lady singing gospel. I love her because my aunt loved her and I grew up listening to her records.

  • nothing like a fat black lady singin' some gospel!!! :D

  • @Farter10015 not helpful to this page please be respectful. you reap what you sow. jerk

  • I love her

  • yea

  • i hope she is not dead yet

  • @the39clues100

She died in January of '72.

  • why did 23 people dislike this I wonder...

  • @PhillyGirl1 they never stood in front of a wall needing God's help to tear it down...

  • @PhillyGirl1

25 ppl no taste in music

  • We still the LP brand new with plastic on it. How's that for archives? lol

  • notice any microphone next to her? nope! that is true vocal power and talent.

90% of the singers nowadays wont even be heard about 9 ft. away without microphone. If you actually can sing like this, please feel free to contact me, we will take over the music business ; )

  • awsome!!

  • Wow! Great stuff!!

  • I always love her voice at this light high pitch. Does she sound higher because the video is sped up a little?

  • @ccrump1

Definitely it's been sped up. She didn't start to sound this high until the mid-sixties. She still had a very deep contralto during the fifties. For example, listen to her version of "My Cathedral" compared to "He Has Never Left Me Alone" both here on youtube..

  • Dynamic!!!! Praise God!!!!

  • I love this video

    FIVE STARS * * * * *

  • I love love love this woman!!!!!!

  • If she ever would ever have a meet with the blues... but she is and will be among the better ones. Thank you Mahalia!

  • @TheChocolateDiamonds haha well now you get the reference

  • on ne peut pas rester insensible a une telle voix et prestence ,moi qui est passionné de blues, une reine

    michel,france

  • It's so interesting the difference between her version of that song and the 2000's version of this song. Her "Joshy" and "Jery-cho" are very different than the choral "Jawshua" "Jerichoh." We do it more gospel than she ever intended! :)

  • whenever i hear Mrs. Mahalia Jackson i think of my mother . she was her favorite gospel singer. since she has left there has not been another gospel singer to take her place . just a wonderful instrument of God.

  • BAAM! this is so great!

  • she´s amazing!

  • Brava!

  • i've heard this before

  • fantastic song i love it

  • When I was younger I heard her sing for the first time in my life and her voice and songs really blessed me. I'm in my 50's now and she is still one of my favorite Gospel singers. She gave her all in each song. Her singing touches me so much. Thank you Mahaliah for using that talent to bless others.

  • as easy as if she was just talkin......the woman was amazing.... my grandmother played her every sunday morning......

  • We used to sing this song in school...in England that is. Looking back, I think our headmaster must've had an interest in gospel music, as we used to sing this and Oh Mary, Don't You Weep. I don't know anyone else who has any knowledge of these tracks.

  • What a good strong voice. Her performance seem to shake the rafters everytime she "took it there". She appears to be enjoying doing that. and I enjoy listening to her do it. The Battle of Jericho. Mmph. The way she was blowing, they must have had singers like her. Ooh! Even stronger! Wow.

: ) Let me repeat myself...

    : )

  • especially at or around 1:58. She shook the building, didn't she?

    : )

  • @karolynruffin1 Naw there was none better than her thats for sure!

  • ולנו יש קדחת!

  • Mille grazie per aver pubblicato questi video! Mahalia grande!!

  • Thanks for these postings - she and Nat King Cole were both incomparable - how very lucky we are to be able to continue to be inspired by them!

  • speak english.

  • Here voice was too big for 'pop music'

  • @julbday

wut is that suppose to mean

  • Emeless,

    Thanks for posting this vid.:-)

    AMEN !

  • Wow! This is best

  • Nice to see the original pioneers.

  • Cole's show goes back to '57? Wow. His talent was so pure and bright that even a segregated America tuned him in. What a voice, what a man.

And Mahalia - effortless, enthusiastic - choir pipes - summoned from depths of her soul. EP mentioned her often, no doubt he listened to her in wonder, and understood and appreciated her gift.

Thank you for posting it, Emeless. And thanks, Pippi B, for celebrating it.

  • You are wecomed elvisworldwide!

  • My sister was named after her!
