i like the original pickups better :D but yet again.... opinions are like butt holes...we all have one :D good work sir, i watch your videos all the time. i got on a forum and i found you on there! I swear im not stalking you, i just had an issue with my epi les paul 56, had to get it rewired like a gibson because, it was humming to the point i couldn't hear myself play. I thought it was the input jack but, it wasn't so i got it rewired.
between the P90 on a gibson sg classic and those seymour duncan .... on youre opinion what sounds better? as far as i know seymour's are better than gibson in pickups
@AlochEX I heard SD's don't have the wiring to the edge of the bobbin like on the orig Gibson P90's from the past or present, I really don't know so I am anxious for a response to your Q? from Coop
Do you find the neck pickup louder than the bridge? I have a goldtop fitted with an original 1955 pup in the bridge and a Duncan Vintage p90 in the neck - the 55 neck pup was dead - the neck is a lot louder than the bridge - is this standard with the P90's? Thanks for posting, it's amazing how good your guitar sounds with these pups
@spacemanGoldie The pickups on mine are balanced. You might want to examine the wiring and/or soldering in your goldtop if you haven't already. Thanks for your kind words. : )
Nice demo's some good tones as far as Duncans v's stock, the difference that I can hear is the Duncans are sound far more refined and smoother more hi-fi where as the stock alnico v's sound more gritty and raw.I guess what it really comes down to its horse's for courses you should always trust your ears they will let you know if you like the tones you are hearing or not. gillyzoom FTW 1369
As ever, your playing is spot on and enjoyable. Plus you give a good sense of the capabilities of the instrument. Did you have any set up issues when you bought it? The Epi LPs I run across in the store always seem to have problems.
Dude, you're awesome. Love it! I have to say though, the original P90's in your other video seem to have more bite, cut, and more clarity. I'm getting ready to build a Warmoth Jazzmaster so that's why I'm on the hunt for some wicked P90's !! Thank you for your great videos !!
It is very smooth I love it. I dont really know much about the neck shape names. I think its a good solid C Neck. It is my favorite. The only thing is when you want to play at the 18-22 fret its a little challenging sense the body of the guitar is so solid. its sometimes hard to reach that 22nd fret and bend it.
FUUUUUUCCKK!!!!! I LOVE THAT GUITAR!!!! SO WANT THAT!! im getting pissed off when other people got it.. i have a metal lead guitar, i don't like that anymore,
just a tip, but when playing slide. try playing with your fingers instead of a pick. and lay your right hand against all the strings you arent playing so you wont get all that "noise" from the strings your arent picking. the guitar sounds great btw.
I've heard the Seymour Duncan pickups that you've installed have somewhat of a single coil and humbucker mixed sound? Do you think the replacements sound a little more like a humbucker?
Hey, nice playing. I have a question, well not really but do you recommand this guitar for someone who has been playing for 1 1/2 years, and is there any fret buzz in it???
Yeah.. I had to get the pickup cavities routed out a little deeper. I took it to a luthier to do it, which was a pain... but in the end it was worth it.
Well.. the pickups were $90 each. The luthier only charged me $50 to route the pup cavities and install the pickups. (nice guy!). So... about $230 total.
You really are a great guitarplayer with great skill and variety of techniques. but this would not be nothing without the knowledge that you have read about music, more music to listen!
you have touched with a epiphone G1275 Doubleneck?
Hi Dude, I'm Brazilian and here in Brazil has a epiphone gold top p90.I not know the P90 pickup. Once you know, after searching on the P90 pickup, the sound of the original pickup epiphone lost in gain and sustain, but is pretty bright.
Watch the video of his epiphone pickup with P90 STK-1.The pickup Seymour Duncan STK-1 is high gain but the question is... When I use distortion pedal a marshall jack-Hamer noise will not occur (HUM)? sorry for my bad inglish!
Actually... there's a HUGE difference. At higher volume and gain settings the new pickups don't buzz and aren't microphonic like the original ones were.
Yes you can use these pickups with high gain tones. That's one of the reasons I got 'em. The stock pickups sounded great but were worthless for high gain and volume due to excessive hum and feedback. But these new pickups don't have any of those problems. No hum. No noise. No feedback.
Well after listening very carefully, I can tell you that I like the tone of the original Epiphone P90 pickups better. Would be interesting to know if you put them back in?
I agree that, when comparing the two video clips, the original pickups sound better. But they hummed too much and were microphonic at band volume... so they weren't gig-worthy. In any event, I've really grown to love these Seymour Duncan P90s. They really do have a great tone all their own, and are completely hum-free. I'm not putting the originals back in. Thanks for watching! : )
I've read that some P-90s were put in humbucker sized casings just so people could switch them out if they wanted to. Unless the re-issue is exact down to the size of the original pickups, they may have put in the humbucker sized P-90s. You'd have to compare or ask a luthier.
On a seperate note, I've heard alittle about the Alnico IIs. Could you tell me what makes them different from the Alnico IVs I have on my Epiphone.
i use alnico II's and the main thing is that they have a spongy bass response and to me sound warmer and smoother. theyre also bass heavy compared to IV's. IMO IV's seem really raw where as II's seem more mellow. I like them for my les paul it makes it warm and is good for like GN'R, Aerosmith, Zeppelin, etc. I only like IV's in my single coil guitars.
id still replace them. if you get Duncan Alnico II's they will be less output and will be a bitch punchier and have more clarity. i have a Marshall tube head so its good for that if you want all amp distortion. I used to use them for everything that i have that has humbuckers but i switched to the Duncan Pearly Gates which is basically the same but a bit more output and with more high end. it allows me a bit more harmonic capabilities with relatively the same tone but hotter in the mids.
put the orig. bumble bee caps in it and it will really scream gibson!!! mine did. i put seymore p90s, gibson 500k pots, bumble bee caps, speed knobs and of course, gibson green tuners. now it rocks!!!
(nice) I have a peavey classic 50 love the sound of the classics I also have a valve jr and 2 vintage 30s for the money it sounds great no reverb though. keep rocking
I can't remember... I had them wired for the lower output.. more P90-like tone option. I imagine if I installed push-pull pots, I could go back and forth between series and parallel for more tone options. That would be really cool!
When you have singlecoil pickups, sometimes when you play with distortion, there will be a hum or other noises. And when you play with humbuckers, there will be less or no noise. It cancells the noise.
I found this clip because I was interested in hearing these pick-ups. Thank you for posting it. Then I became excited about the "Chicken Shack" tune. I found some tab but it has a different turnaround and its without the shuffle, any idea where I could find the tab or a similar complete audio version? Thanks- and the guitar sounds great.
Yeah... I only heard a friend play "Chicken Shack" once a long time ago... and that's the only time I've ever heard it. I know I'm probably not even close to playing it right. LOL! Thanks for your comments! : )
Kinda reminds me of a Thoroughgood tone. Also, since the running question is the comparison between Gibson and Epi Les Pauls, in my opinion... One would be hard pressed to be able to say with justification that a Gibson is $2000 better in quality.
No a lot of people do not prefer Epiphone quality to Gibson it's just they are a better value for people who don't want to spend the big bucks on a guitar... a Gibson les paul will still have hotter humbuckers, greater sustain, better machine heads, etc... you name it and it's probably better on the Gibson
Ok one more question. I started practicing Oh well and thats going ok. But could you help me out with some tabs for Chicken Shack? Where can I find them? Thanks for everything.
Beautiful. I'm not usually into epis unless it's the John Lennon Revolution one. Like the old ones. But if I wanted a Gold Top I would probably get the real thing and go for Gibson.
to tell you the truth, you can make ANY guitar sound like zakk wylde, no matter what pickups it might have. its all really in the picking. although some pickups are CLEANER than others, they all basically sound the same distorted. it just takes a certain type of picking and quite a bit of practice.
umm well no not really i challange u to make a lap steel with single coils sound like zakk wylde or an acoutic fisherman pickup and ud really struggle with a strat or something
a 100$ suqire piece of shit strat could sound like zakk wylde according to you? so a telecasters pickups and active EMG pickups sound the same distorted? lol
Good videos and great sound. You wouldn't happen to still have the stock Epi P90s do you? I'm looking for one to put in my bridge. I have the stacked P90 in there right now (it came like that when I bought it used) and I don't care for that tone. I much prefer the sound of the stock P90 that comes with the guitar. I'd buy one of those pickups from you if you still have them?
nickeldreamer, they arent the same guitar, the Goldtop has P90 pickups, some of his guitars have Gibson Burstbucker pickups, stock humbuckers, and classic '57 Humbuckers
Hi friend, cool playin', I have a question for you, the same one of the last guy: I have the same guitar, but I want to change the P-90's for Mini humbuckers, do you know if it is possible? I mean, does it have the same dimensions? or I have to make changes in the body of the guitar? What about the pickguard? Well, thanks for your answer. By the way, what do you preffer, P-90's or mini humbuckers?
Hey, i just saw your question and figured i would answer for you....Mini-Humbuckers were designed to fit into a 9-90 cavity. The mini's pickup ring is the same size and shape as a p90, when you switch to mini's the only thing that changes is you have to make 2 new mounting screw holes inside the cavity cause they are on the edge of the pickup rings on the mini's but more in the center on a p90
Switching to mini humbuckers in that guitar is exactly the same as a les paul deluxe with mini humbuckers. same guitar ,same routs, different pickups.
Hi friend, thanks for your comment, excelent help for me. I have a question for you, What would you preffer? p90's or mini hums? Thanks for your attention!
I personally like p-90's cause they are a little punchier and have a little more range like a single coil. The mini-humbuckers are a little more like a brighter version of a standard humbucker tone. Dont judge the tone on the epiphone p-90's. For p-90's I like Lindy Fralin p-90's. If you go with mini humbuckers, Gibson mini's are really good.
TV Jones mini-humbuckers can be housed in a piece of plastic that looks like a "soapbar" and fits into the spot where the old "soapbar" went. Go to my YouTube page and among my "Favorites" there are 2 videos of a guy who put them into guitars that used to have p90 soapbar type pickups: "TV Jones Powertrons Guitar Demo Video! Filtertrons Pickups!" and "Agile Harm-1 Electric Guitar Demo Filtertron Hilotron Pickup"; also see any of the "Rockabilly Guitar By Billy Joe" to hear how good they sound.
caustico2: I didn't have enough letters to tell you to go to the TV Jones website. You can read about their pickups and the various configurations for mounting them to your guitar without having to modify it. Their pickups can fit into almost any type of guitar. You just have to make sure you choose the correct type of mount(s) you need when you order the pickup(s). Go to the website and read everything carefully and you'll see what I'm talking about.

I've had mine for a few months and I got used to the weight real fast. It should'nt be a problem (and I'd say it's well worth it), unless your a little weeny or something.
you have just convinced me to get the stk neck pickup for my epiphone explorer

do classic humbuckers fit into this guitar? I mean seymour duncan alnico II pro..

Kinda reminds me of a Thoroughgood tone. Also, since the running question is the comparison between Gibson and Epi Les Pauls, in my opinion... One would be hard pressed to be able to say with justification that a Gibson is $2000 better in quality.
Firebird3509576 4 years ago
i love ur vids.
i like the fact you have cheaper guitars than gibsons and prove to people you don't need a$2000+ guitar to get a great sound
amarr1 4 years ago
I have one of these Epi '56 Gold Tops and I'm very pleased. It stays in tune and the neck fits very well in my hand.
Not all Gibsons are better than Epis, it varies from guitar to guitar. I have played many crappy Gibsons, the quality is not always perfect.

Wow, that sound is wayy thicker than my LP standard. I want it. XD

Wow.
Why dont you replace the pickups on the numerous amounts of your Dots?
Or Get a real Gibson
GmIaBrScOoN 4 years ago
I've heard that this Epiphone is close to the same quality as a Gibson.
A lot of people prefer Epiphone pauls to the gibson ones too.
treblemaker91 4 years ago 2
It's true. Epiphones are the great Gibson quality for an even better price. They're also great starter guitars.
SGman900 4 years ago
No a lot of people do not prefer Epiphone quality to Gibson it's just they are a better value for people who don't want to spend the big bucks on a guitar... a Gibson les paul will still have hotter humbuckers, greater sustain, better machine heads, etc... you name it and it's probably better on the Gibson

Why do u get epiphones. With all the moeny uve spent on them u could probly but some saweet acutaual gibsons
eddiefan36 4 years ago
some people would rather spend less money and get a larger variety of sounds and feels then play the same thing over and over again.

Thanks alot.
apnova69 4 years ago
Awsome video! I enjoy all of your videos. One question and I know you get this alot. What are the first two things you play in this video?
apnova69 4 years ago
The first thing I play is "Oh Well" by Fleetwood Mac. The 2nd thing is an old blues tune called "Chicken Shack"
dcooper830 4 years ago
Beautiful. I'm not usually into epis unless it's the John Lennon Revolution one. Like the old ones. But if I wanted a Gold Top I would probably get the real thing and go for Gibson.
Rockaboogie27 4 years ago
i am really close to buy one gold top
but i have a doubt
if you put the gain at 10
does it sound crazy like zakk wylde??
lespaulfan92 4 years ago
to tell you the truth, you can make ANY guitar sound like zakk wylde, no matter what pickups it might have. its all really in the picking. although some pickups are CLEANER than others, they all basically sound the same distorted. it just takes a certain type of picking and quite a bit of practice.
conytony 4 years ago
Don't comment on things you obviously know nothing about.
ChromeMkII 4 years ago
umm well no not really i challange u to make a lap steel with single coils sound like zakk wylde or an acoutic fisherman pickup and ud really struggle with a strat or something
john19921 4 years ago
hahha.. wow are u serious
a 100$ suqire piece of shit strat could sound like zakk wylde according to you? so a telecasters pickups and active EMG pickups sound the same distorted?

T2TB 4 years ago
Your videos are awesome man, I like your playing, what was that you were playing at 1:46?
Amerikan122 4 years ago
At 1:46.. that was just something I made up. : )
dcooper830 4 years ago
nickeldreamer, they arent the same guitar, the Goldtop has P90 pickups, some of his guitars have Gibson Burstbucker pickups, stock humbuckers, and classic '57 Humbuckers
Amerikan122 4 years ago
why did you buy so many of the same guitars, just different colours?
nickeldreamer 4 years ago
Hi friend, cool playin', I have a question for you, the same one of the last guy: I have the same guitar, but I want to change the P-90's for Mini humbuckers, do you know if it is possible? I mean, does it have the same dimensions? or I have to make changes in the body of the guitar? What about the pickguard? Well, thanks for your answer. By the way, what do you preffer, P-90's or mini humbuckers?
caustico2 4 years ago
I don't know if you can put mini-hums are the same size as P90s. I prefer P90s over mini-humbuckers.
dcooper830 4 years ago
Hey, i just saw your question and figured i would answer for you....Mini-Humbuckers were designed to fit into a 9-90 cavity. The mini's pickup ring is the same size and shape as a p90, when you switch to mini's the only thing that changes is you have to make 2 new mounting screw holes inside the cavity cause they are on the edge of the pickup rings on the mini's but more in the center on a p90
XCaptainJohnnyX 4 years ago
Switching to mini humbuckers in that guitar is exactly the same as a les paul deluxe with mini humbuckers. same guitar ,same routs, different pickups.
XCaptainJohnnyX 4 years ago
Hi friend, thanks for your comment, excelent help for me. I have a question for you, What would you preffer? p90's or mini hums? Thanks for your attention!
caustico2 4 years ago
I personally like p-90's cause they are a little punchier and have a little more range like a single coil. The mini-humbuckers are a little more like a brighter version of a standard humbucker tone. Dont judge the tone on the epiphone p-90's. For p-90's I like Lindy Fralin p-90's. If you go with mini humbuckers, Gibson mini's are really good.
XCaptainJohnnyX 4 years ago
TV Jones mini-humbuckers can be housed in a piece of plastic that looks like a "soapbar" and fits into the spot where the old "soapbar" went. Go to my YouTube page and among my "Favorites" there are 2 videos of a guy who put them into guitars that used to have p90 soapbar type pickups: "TV Jones Powertrons Guitar Demo Video! Filtertrons Pickups!" and "Agile Harm-1 Electric Guitar Demo Filtertron Hilotron Pickup"; also see any of the "Rockabilly Guitar By Billy Joe" to hear how good they sound.
knovinski 3 years ago
caustico2: I didn't have enough letters to tell you to go to the TV Jones website. You can read about their pickups and the various configurations for mounting them to your guitar without having to modify it. Their pickups can fit into almost any type of guitar. You just have to make sure you choose the correct type of mount(s) you need when you order the pickup(s). Go to the website and read everything carefully and you'll see what I'm talking about.

are les pauls heavy? im gettin one
wowandgnr 4 years ago
They're about 10 pounds. Alot of people complain about it but you would be surprised what it does for the tone and sustain.
XxnoitcelferxX 4 years ago
I've had mine for a few months and I got used to the weight real fast. It should'nt be a problem (and I'd say it's well worth it), unless your a little weeny or something.
