Actually, on "Shooting at the moon" by Kevin Ayers, there's a recent bonus track called "Hat", a standard by Ayers, and they play this in the middle of it as a very short medley. When i now heard this song i immediately recognized it.

Plus: This song is goddamn awesome. This is just hilarious.

He was an English comedy actor called Larry Martyn and he appeared in loads of things most notably as Mr Mash in Are You Being Served? An idiot called "A Knight Called Ni" had the actor down as Andrew Sachs on Wikipedia and when I corrected it he removed any mention of the actor!

Thanks to you both, Jason and Hergest!  It had been bugging me who this actor was for ages. Wikipedia said it was Andrew Sachs (Manuel from Fawlty Towers) even though it looks nothing like him!!! I changed it to Larry Martyn and first they changed it back again then removed my link to a photo of Larry! If anyone wants to back me up just go to Wikipedia and put Don Alfonso Mike Oldfield into the search. then click on the discussion tab. You don't have to register. Thanks again!

bit of useless trivia for you- the B side of this single was "In Dulci Jubilo" but NOT the same version that was itself later released as an A side. Does anyone have a recording of this original version as I've never heard it before.

Yes it was. One of the best compilations ever. Kevin Coyne, Slapp Happy, Henry Cow, Hatfield and the North, White Noise, Ivor Cutler, Robert Wyatt, Gong etc. I'm not that much of an Oldfield fan, but this is really great. Chris Cutler (Henry Cow) & Kevin Ayres (Soft Machine) play along here.
