I keep reading ignorant takes on how this album was critically panned upon its release. That may be true, but chances are it was just because those critics were in their '20s and didn't know what Jarvis was singing about until they got in their '30s.
I love Jarvis, he's got so much integrity which is so rare in the world of pop/rock. And he's the only one who still looks cool while going up in a stairlift lol.
this song makes me think of my grandmother w/ alzheimer's...not an original idea, but buy flowers for people who are ALIVE. they can't much appreciate them dead.
this is a top song from an excellent band. I tend to forget how much i liked Pulp, then i stumble on them on youtube time after time and then sit and listen to all their songs all over again. Fuckin DIFFERENT CLASS man.
He said he forgave his father after meeting him finally in Australia. Cocker said he just pitied him, so I don't know why he'd go write a revenge song.
What revenge song? If you mean Help The Aged is about his father you are wrong, it's about him having just turned 33 during the recording of This Is Hardcore and how he felt that he was old and over the hill.
love this vid. ive often wanted to record it and take it to work with me i work in an old folks home i want to put it in our front entrance so it would be playing when visitors etc walk in the door.
you can associate the term 'timeless classic' with this tune easily, when i first heard this I was my late teens and simply thought 'fair enough, message makes sense - nice tune too' and well, got on with life heh.
fast 4ward to 2009 and im not that same punk kid any more, and I truly appreciate and admire the message in this song...a unique track for its time and for our time too. Wonderful stuff by Pulp. 5/5 for this vid post.
this is the music a grew up to from liek 3-7 then i started listening to hevy metal lol but i still love this it reminds me of been lil again :) when i was 5 i sung loads of pulp cast and lightning seeds at a karioke competion lol
Much as I love Pulp, there is a part of this song that sounds like a David Bowie track that I can't quite remember. Every time I hear this I half remember the Bowie track and it's driving me nuts. People in England say "pop" instead of "soda?" Really? We say pop in Minnesota too. But nowhere else, really. Maybe everybody in Minnesota and the UK should be friends. Except for me. I say soda, usually.
I think the song is talking not excluding "older folks" from the consideration of sexual partnership just based on their age. It might turn out to be satisfactory, or better!
Eh, no. It's about how youth doesn't last and that everyone gets old. If they're lucky. There's no hidden concept. I think you're just trying to justify your own granny/granda loving fantasies.
Wow, a song about aging! must be a first for rock music. I'm turning 49 this year. Jarvis should relax, a person can stay young inside, just the body changes, really!
I read some articles with Jarvis speaking about this song and as I recall it was a cheeky reference to him starting his thirties. as much as it is a nice homage to OAPS...He was just really anxious about losing his twenties )see also "Dishes" where he moans about being 33
I can't sop thinking that all the old people were like me once; young, full of energy, eager for learning and achievements, and how many many stories will never heard and in the inetability that we all are going to the same place.... this song speaks the truth
this song will always make me cry! how many of our parents/grandparents are put in these institutions (and stateside, how many are abused/neglected by a dysfunctional system)...they loved us when we were young and invalid, love them as they love you when they need you most.
In England we had a lovely care assistant called Beverly Alett, and another kind hearted doctor called Harold Shipman; I believe that he is the world's greatest serial killer with over 200 notches on his stick, so I am probably a little biased.
