actually we have teeth to break bones. Never break a chicken bone in half? Its because the stuff teeth is made of is stronger than bone. So if we can do it I don't see why a 10 ft 550 pound lion couldn't do it.

because its not the teeth that is breaking the bone, its the FORCE in which the teeth are driven down from. Hyenas have a bite force that ranks 2nd or 3rd in the world for mammals, and 1st place goes to the tazmanian devil, a little creature that is slightly smaller then a possum. Their mouth rips literally through anything bite of the bite force they produce.

ok just think of this. a Hyena produces the same amount of bite force as a bear trap..thats the PSI of pressure thats breaking the bone, the teeth are just added for ensuring that prey is locked in the mouth and doesnt run away If a mouse trap produced the same amount PSI of pressure AND a mouse trap doesnt have spikes, its a flat surace that closes shut, i would imagine if you stuck your hand in there it would brake your hand, because its the PSI slamming shut, teeth hold and grin INTO the bone

no actually what happens is that one of the male lions charges the hyena, gets it, performs throat bite, and bam dead in about 3 seconds.A male lion could very easily hold its ground againsts a small sized hyena clan

@DTHPRF66 You're wrong, a large number of hyenas usually retreat when a male lion steps into the battle field, you should watch a documentary called" Nabii a Hyena Princess" you will see a huge pack of hyenas harrasing a few lionesses, until a male lion steps in and kills the metrioch, while the rest of the hyenas scatter away in fear. Im guessing you're one of those people who just assume false opinions about hyenas coz of their large numbers.

if you watch the video, the key to the Hyenas success is the Massive numbers, and when you have massive numbers not even lions can challenge you...so to lay all of these claims to rest is, we can just observe what we see, and what i see is, Lions get dominated time in and time out by Hyenas. Hyenas are the only Animal that dares to challenge lions and successfully take their food. So, if you hate Hyenas, learn alittle about them first then make a judgement

I wouldn't want to be hunted by a Hyena! They don't go for the thought like a Lion. They ware there prey down till they collapse from exhaustion, then they eat it from the rear up. So the victim doesn't die till they finely reach the heart or lungs. Now that would suck bad. Some of there victims stay alive for days until the Hyenas get hungry enough to eat the other half!

@DTHPRF66, you are right. Hyena is a group hunter and as such is far more effective than lions. When it comes to defend territory no lion pride can throw hyenas away. On the 20th Aug 2009 in the Serengueti, A hyena clan of 50 managed to dethone the 25-strong reigning lion pride for good. It took the kill of 9 fully grown lions including the 2 alpha male lions, at a cost of 6 hyena deaths.
