In one week's time, I will sacrifice my new 10 month beard in order to participate in Movember. This may seem tragic to some, but consider the Motivation behind the act, and please pitch in with a donation! As an added bonus, I will be making another animated beard film as I shave it off... it will be Movember themed, and will be added in mid Movember!
To donate go to the Movember website and search for Adam Fisher or LAIKAnthrope!
Anyone who has ever sold timber knows that when sign the contract you also have the option to sign a contract for someone to come in, poison, burn, and replant after the harvesting is done. Before you go off on an tangent about OMG WTF ABOUT BAMBI AND THUMBER AND THAT SKUNK. The poison only effects plant life and the only way an animal could die from it is if they tripped and landed in a puddle of the stuff. Fire is a natural way of clearing underbrush so trees can grow.
It also adds nitrogen to the soil which promotes plant growth. Timber stand improvement has been practiced for years. Foresters are conservationists, they are looking to improve the timber stand for optimal growth, as well as protecting wildlife.
When tracing the history of western thought over the last 1000 years, we see a pendulum shift between fixation on the soul and on the mind. Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Enlightenment, Romantic, etc. . . Does the popularity of the beard in the soul-oriented periods signify a lack of faith in human endeavor? Beards seem to symbolize an inwardly focused maturity and detachment from civilization. In the Enlightenment, the Roaring Twenties, the booming 1950s, men were optimistic, and no beards
kudos to you.... personally the resources issue doesn't bother me very much (not enough room here to elaborate so I won't try) but I do appreciate the imagination and effort that's gone into this entertaining little clip.
It's both original and well made. you get a gold star!
@thenfm I bet you are 400 pounds. Hurrr damn hipsters, I'm a real man.. Nothing here is ironic or inauthentic, stop using "hipster" as a blanket label for any one you dislike.
They do grow back if harvested sustainably. In many cases, clearcutting and slash and burn farming techniques strip the land, which leads to erosion, etc. and soon you just have barren land. I have no problem with responsible Timber farming.
@mainefish Thats funny because it was the tree huggers of the 70s and 80 that caused most of our logging to be outsourced to other countries you dont use sustainability as their business model, only "slash and burn and make way for the cows". logging in the US is down to 1% of what it was, in a country where when we cut one down, we planted another. is there anything we can do about them knocking down the rainforest in chile? nope. bring back logging to the US. CREATE JOBS.
@mainefish 2,000 + year old trees cannot be "sustainably harvested" no matter how they are harvested. Here around my home the great nation destroyed 95% of them, and the establishment is only beginning to understand what the difference is between a 100 year old tree and a 2000 year old tree; WATER.
@mainefish erosion, etc.? I can't believe people gave this thumbs up as though it was educational. Stripping fallen tree's and brush from forests means there's nothing left behind to break down and enrich the soil. 'Erosion, etc.' has nothing to do with it.
@mainefish this is a very poignant and educated response. I just graduated with a degree in forestry (not that it means i know everything) and i can vouch that this is a true statement.
@nukeforyou really easy way to test that. Check soil for salinity.
It's not quite that simple... you see when you clear an entire area of trees, you don't simply remove the trees then let them grow back. You remove homes, habitats, other flora and fauna. when they lose their homes, homes that have existed their entire lives, they don't simply relocate and wait for their homes to grow back. The plants and animals that sustained are gone, long before the trees return.
Also a lot of our agricultural and industrial practices increase the salinity of fresh water. There are no cheap solution to remove salt from water, so we're slowly salting the land.
Man you should have used the thing I use to keep it trim. Makes the beard look shorter longer. Your beard could look like Day 1 on Day 100 you won't believe the results. Look at the video.
I clicked on the vid. not knowing what it was. It starts, I'm like "WHOA! Awesome beard!" And then I'm like "Wait, what's he doing?" Then you start to pull and cut your hair off! And I'm like "NOOOOOOOO!" But then you sneeze and it's all back.
@comedytracker It's sort of like keeping chocolate in a cupboard and eating tiny pieces every day over the period of a month, as opposed to gobbling it all up at once. Yeah, it might be nice to eat it quickly, but then you don't have any chocolate. D: Better save it so you have it when you need it.
@comedytracker "retard" you say? I found that people that use the " tard " words are lacking in maturity. Lemme go check... ...OK, I see you are 22 y.o. Lucky for you there is still time for you to grow up. When I was 22, and even 15, I never found saying "retard" felt intelligent. Do you?
@woodsprout oh snap. You got me there buddy. Why the personal attack? Simple, you are unable to generate a rebuttal to my statement.
a) The wood we consume is grown specifically for that purpose.
b) That wood grows very fast.
c) That we can grow more plants than we can eat. There is no need to avoid eating or not eating because storing it would be worse than eating it fresh.
d) The resources in the earth are never used by anything other than humans.
Thats is a well done clip!
