I was 4 years old when Amoco blew up and I remember much of what happened. That fire burned out of control for a week. Threw me out of bed to the other side of the bedroom. Grandma picked me up as I was crying my butt off. It was like an A bomb was dropped on Whiting.
That is great info, didnt know about the film that was shot in whiting, did you know the title of the Movie?,all we have is footage of Whiting Parks, carnivals,,thru the years, and i cant wait to see the improvements of the park,as it is getting a total makeover,I Love WHITING,,,, I Think you just inspired a new project.,,.Thank you
There was a movie made in Whiting Park about 1953 with children from Whiting. After it was shot, it was shown in the Whiting Theater on 119th..any infor?? Van Bialon on FB
My Father owned Bialon Music at 1932 Indpls Blvd. I can remember that there was gas running down by the curbs and people screaming..the sky was black.. it was horrific . A friend of mine had a piece of a tanker go through his house, through several rooms, and while he was in bed- cut off part of his leg. We live about 2 blocks down from White Castle and across from Caesars.
my father owned calumet marine supply business close to it, our house only a couple miles away on parrish in e. chicacgo. the blast was very early morning. i thought at first it was "The Atom Bomb" I'd recently heard talked about (i was 6). relieved it wasn't a bomb, i enjoyed the excitement of everyone in the streets in pajamas... later, we learned of some severe injuries and deaths, one of whom was a classmate at st. pat's. and dad's store windows broke from the blast.
hasickubin...My parents were born in Whiting and my grandfather worked for Standard Oil as a chemist. My parents were coming back from summer camp and my Mom's father was inside during the fire. According to the history film of this fire only 3 people died. One from a piece of a tank that fell through a roof while they were sleeping and 2 from heart attacks or something. I can check with Mom and see if the names ring a bell. They moved after getting married in '62 to Chicago.
@oldsreo hey oldsreo, thaks for response, I already contacted one of the sons of my family which lived in whiting and those eleven kids did not died at that fire, it was wrong information.....10 of them passed away, but none of them died at the fire, cuz i called with one of the sons of those 11 kids....thanks for response
@hasickubin You are welcome. My great grandfather was a station master for the the railroad depot there. My Dad's father was a field worker. Ask Him if he remembers a Williams or a Fredinburg and the might be a connection. Mom is still thinking.
It's a small town so who knows. I hope you get to know your family. Up there it's important. I was born in Chicago but stil keep in touch with my Midwestern family. they are the only ones that I can deal with.LOL
@oldsreo I will ask about that. I am in contact with one of the grandson of the people who might worked with your dad´s father. I still have not talk with those children of Mary and Frank.
Maria moved from Czechoslovakia to Indiana Whiting and married Frank Puplava, they had 12 childrens, 11 of them died in this fire, one of them is alive and her name is Elizabeth. She should be around 80 years old. She married Darrell Genevosie Munster. If anyone has got some information about her, or her husband, let me know, Thank You!
She told us, that 11 of their kids died this day in tihs big fire:( I was so said:( all of them were my cousin in third row:( but there is one children, her name is Elizabeth Genevosie Munster, she should be around 80 years old...we could not fiind here....if anyone, has known her or has any informations about her, or her childrens. pls let me know here,,,thank you very much
My name is Tomas Dado, I am an exchange student from Slovakia. I am in Kansas now. My dad, couple weeks ago told me, that his grandfother has got sister. Her name was Maria Dadova and she moved to Whiting Indian aroud 1930 and she married Frank Puplava. They had 12 childrens. Me and my host uncle found Betty and she is wife of one of the childrens of Maria and Frank.
I remember the Standard Oil fire well. In Hyde Park we went to "The Point" at 55th and the lake to watch the fire. People brought picnic lunches and spent the day. The firemen just isolated the area and let it burn out. Not much else they could do! Honestly, it was like war to see so much flame and smoke.
I have family that told me stories about that. My Grandpa helped fight the fire we lived in East Chicago but my Grandma was from Whiting. You were able to see the fireball from 15+ miles away,
it is still used its a soap factory..

Wow! Looks a bit like the Texas City disaster of 1947 (America's worst industrial accident, over 500 dead).
