Mark Borchardt is America. Passion, determination and hard work despite all the bullshit and problems, despite economic setbacks and substance abuse, despite coming from lower middle class. It might not be pretty all the time but it's one of a kind.
If he'd followed his own advice more closely I think he could have been an excellent filmmaker. Watching American Movie it seems obvious that his great ambition is fueled by a desire to escape his boring suburban existence and achieve fame and fortune. These are the types of superficial motives that he warns against here. It is also apparent, from the clips we are shown of Coven and its making, that he seemed determined to rush its production and realese , which to me, compromises its integrity.
@StinkyKnobcheese I think you missed the point. When he said that, he was mopping floors. He wasn't bagging on factory workers and housewives, but the people who have no drive, desire and passion to reach for something they dreamed about. We NEED factory workers and housewives...they are extremely integral to society, but nobody dreams about growing up and assembling lawn mowers on an assembly line. If it wasn't for those dreamers who stuck to it all the way, this world would be a boring place.
@StinkyKnobcheese I can see your point, but I never felt he was diminishing them. After all, it's his background.I think it was a way of keeping himself motivated. Also, let's be honest, everyone wants to be more. Sadly, very few people get their dreams. And you don't even have to talk about factory worker, because there are many people societys deem successful that hate their lives.
@skydark Oh definitely! I am that way myself. Having worked in factories for many years before I was able to get out of it I guess I took offence to his remarks. But you are right.
Mark is a role model.

He is an arrogant little prick with a disgusting attitude. He puts down factory workers and housewives as if they are worth less than other people.

The interviewer is a tad dense to be interviewing an intellectual powerhouse as Borchardt. ASPIRING not INSPIRING
