By "50 years behind" I mean that the Russians are demonstrating a viewpoint that was actually enshrined in laws of the US an UK only 50 years ago. It's a matter of conjecture what the attitude of the public and authorities would have been in the US in 1960 had a gay pride march been held in NY or Washington. It's likely though that it would have been far less tolerant than it is today.
I would agree though that Russia's direction is uncertain at this point.
