  • Check the video in my channel, Linux is junk

  • Fair comment. I'd say Windows is as good as Linux performance wise as a desktop OS but Linux is free of charge and restrictions so I'd say Windows has a bit of catching up to do. There are no student - home - business versions of linux, you get the full blown version, free.

  • Nice, but I must ask you to call it GNU/Linux. Knowing about its origin and freedom principles DOES matter, because freedom is its main feature, despite of the technical advantages this OS can have.

  • @DragardKaos Awwwww are you mad Linux nerd?

  • @AstonMartinFan0210 Your homophobia amuses me.

  • @AstonMartinFan0210 strong asperger's syndrome with your anime icon and background.

  • What I mean by that is Norton, McAfee, AVG, etc etc, their primary job IS to protect and patch security holes and fix viruse, trojans, etc etc. As time goes on and more viruses(albeit a fraction of the viruses for windows), Apple's main focus is OSX not antivirus software. I know, the updates patch the security holes and increase functionality, BUT anti virus is not apples MAIN focus. Just something to think about. "Infallible" security blanket of Apple is not going to always be infallible.

  • @FriendofDaishonin No, their "job" is preventing goatse. The "holes" are to be patched upstream - this is why software *should* be opensource. If upstream is dead, not responding or not interested you have some goatse. Your *favorite* w7, or w8 or w9 or w999 - is goatse os.

  • I personally like all three. Apple makes a damn good OS, Windows 7 is a damn good OS, and as long as Linux is configured properly, and are patient, it is a damn good OS(some distros better than others due to support). Each OS is better for various uses. I actually switched back from OSX to Windows 7 being that it is so stable. I know, it's far less secure but if you think about it, as time goes on and hackers/programmers attack Apple more, which is better? Apple or Notron?

  • This guy is the BIGGEST Fucking Troll on YouTube

  • Linux speeds up old computers.

    Windows slows down newest.

    Read between the lines :)

  • The only thing that prevents the people from changing to linux, is the lack of commercial games. If Steam would be released in a native linux version, then they would not only please the people allready using linux, but also make linux very attractive for every gamer that still uses windows for gaming. But if the gaming industry is not thinking about linux as a gaming platform, it will never happen. Such a shame....

  • @FarmandDK Ehh... desura? Humble Indie Bundle? Why gaming industry has been thinking about Linux all way back in 1995, when all Blizzard servers, whole Battlenet was linux-hosted. It is still now. So,.. maybe its really buyers not buying games with some bribe-salt from microsoft?

Just go out and buy, or run via wine, I don´t think people care. In 2012, Linux runs 90% of windows software and has enough native gaming. Its only customer base lagging behind.

  • I found this on linux.com, any way, my ubuntu is pretter then a mac and faster then a pc.

  • i disagree with you because linux is so annoying. I am learning linux this semester in my college and its busting my balls. i dont know if it the teacher because he didnt teach us anything or it because i use windows everyday

  • mint 12 FTW.. passes ubuntu on distrowatch.. sorry for the earlier rants... started posting before watching all of video... Best regards and keep doing what ya doing m8. I just think any so called "nerd" or "geek" really should be competent with a Unix based environment. like why don't you do some Mac tutorials with the terminal.. and why most Mac users never open it. ALL YOU DO IS WATCH YOUTUBE, FACEBOOK, AND LOLCATZ, for you linux, mac, windows are functionally identical..

  • RTFM n00b some1 else said first but so true.. users are becoming more and more removed from a true interface with the hardware.. NTFS sux.. FAT, and FAT32 suck...

you don't need to be a computer or electrical engineer to use linux.. just be open to learning a new way of interfacing... you mindless consumers...

  • STFU do you even write code.... Real 31337 computer user rock Unix.. one way or another even if only using putty within windows.. keep targeting half wits.. I for one DONT NEED WINDOWS CAUSE I DONT HAVE WALLS..

  • @opaqueproductions235 and for games, all you devs should rock OpenGL way sexier than DirectX even if on a windows box...

  • Windows has all the games. My job here is done.

  • linux is jst copy/paste made by amateurs.

  • @icguilty ahahaha, hilarious. Then I must say: windows is just quick and dirty rip-off by seatle single guy.

  • if u wanna talk about real tech, get inside. linux is a fukkkkkkkkkking shttttttttttttttttt

  • Mac is for porn enough said! :D

  • I am using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS right now. 11.10 did not work with my Inspiron 1520's wifi card. No drivers. I actually use this computer for internet/email/youtubing etc, and also for ROM's/Emulation. I am running ZSNES playing Finial Fantasy II for the SNES right now!

If you or anybody remembers the name for the emulator/ROM based Linux please let me know, I have a mini ITX computer that it would be good for, as long as it supports HDMI audio out.

  • @tenchidbz you want a emulator for what? The only "emulator" that i know is WINE HQ (WINE Is Not a Emulator) that lets u play windows games and programs!!

  • I've been running GNU/Linux since 1997. Started with Red Hat. Never would go back to any Microsloth Product.

  • u can't say linux is better than windows. first, they aren't iquals. windows have more tech than ur linux. windows word have more tech n feature than ur open office. in technologies linux losssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

  • @icguilty No, Microsoft has more money than Linux so they have the money to buy the resources to make the products, But because Linux is open source they don't have this money, But the advantage to this .. almost everything is free including the operating system.

  • @icguilty So tell me, What does windows have that Linux systems do not?

  • @berowra support, but I use Ubuntu

  • @mythreligion Ubuntu is fine xD

  • @icguilty Sir, I dare you to make less sense.

  • Windows is better!!!!!!!!!

  • Mac OS X Lion !!

  • i see your video it's quite amazing i want to use linux but i see there is many kind of Linux like Ubuntu mint UNIX or something i don't know but i am a graphics designer and learner of web-development and programming. So please suggest me what type of Linux i can use.

  • is weird to hear marketplace on a linux topic because most of the distros are free.

  • this guy is a fucking retard, Linux sucks big cock. who the hell uses linux, almost all schools and businesses use windows or apple. Linux has not name brand products either. Dont use it, the program will cock block your every move when you try to download something online,

  • @smoovbeast "almost all schools and businesses use windows or apple" because the people who are learning or working are inexperienced with anything BUT windows and apple. if people started using it as their first OS they'd be fine. "not name brand products either" yes instead if has thousands of FREE open source ones which work just as well and do the exact same stuff, plus more. plus linux is more stable, more secure, faster and free. get ur spoiled ass outta here

  • @naveenc69 UC Berkeley recently started opening more Linux Labs.

  • @nextstep333 nice

  • Comment removed

  • @smoovbeast schools and shit dont use linux because its open source lol

  • @TheUfc67 all pcs on my school have linux installed...

  • @Lopesmaio1 i wish i went to your school...

  • @Lopesmaio1 your point?

  • windows makes people dumb, to all windows users start using linux , linux doesn't crashes like windows(only if you are doing something that you aren't supposed to do),linux has the best security and i promise you that you will never be infected cause privilige escalation on linux is very hard, linux has better performance, linux distros like ubuntu, mint, opensuse are really easy to use, FREE SOFTWARE , FREE SOFTWARE and the last reason MORE FREE SOFTWARE .

  • xubuntu my fav

  • you say "Linux is open source, it does not cost anything" that is not correct, there are distros open source which you have to pay to get a copy of it, for example Red Hat, open source software does not imply that it has to be free of pice.

  • @GuilleMurto Have you heard about fedora, and red hat sells their enterprise solutions, so if you want to make money you have to pay money

  • @admirF96 I don't see what you mean and what it has to do with my commento, i was just trying to make clear that open source is not always free of price, and yes, I know red hat and Fedora

  • @GuilleMurto if you are using windows, i am not surprised why you didn't get what i meant with my comment on your comment

  • @admirF96 then you should be surprised and explain it to me

  • I'd leave windows in a heartbeat if it wasn't for gaming.

  • Linux is better because of customization ?? Has he used Unity or Gnome-Hell lately ?

  • @4werr0n3

    There are other desktop environments.

  • I think Fedora Core 14 is a good starter distro. I've played around on a lot of distros, and its the best all around. As a matter of fact, I like it far more than FC15 and FC16. I installed Diablo 2 (With expansion) yesterday, and I think it runs better than it did in Windows. No 3D card, and it runs very smoothly. I am on a Dell Netbook, 1.6Ghz Atom, 32MB video card with no 3D, and I haven't even seen a jitter.

  • accept my video reply please ! its absolutely true ! no tricks !

    Ok ? please ?

  • @Ubuntu4yourpc ...also i dont try to advertise anything or even support ubuntu ! i have linux mint :-)

  • WINDOWS FTW :-)

  • I'm currently acquainting myself with Ubuntu's Unity interface, I'm actually starting to like it though I would like to see more customization(changing colors, etc.) I've also played around with Debian a little as well.

  • ur voice is funny

  • Linux "speeds up" old computers (compared to windows).

  • @jscottupton Depends a lot on which distro. Not all distros are lightweight.

  • From a more objective standpoint, Linux is better written than Windows and contains less bugs than Windows.

  • @NedTheDread that's totally wrong

  • @NedTheDread totally wrong. linux have less bugs, hahahahahha yeah right!.

  • I am using Linux for about an year. And its fuckin aweasome.

  • @MetalheadBuser Which distribution are you running?

  • @MetalheadBuser Which distribution?

  • Linux is great. I used it for 8 months before I realized that most great new software wasn't for linux. I was one of those who switched over for customization, but switched back to have better software. My, used to be windows, then linux, and now windows again, is faster, and gets better battery life than it ever did with linux. If you want a virus proof computer, that is customizable, and has halfway decent software, and don't want to be a gamer then go with linux. Windows if otherwise.

  • @RockinAwesoification Or you can just have both by dual booting... You can use linux but then if you want to play games or use certain software, choose windows! Thats what I would do.

  • GNU/Linux is the fastest growing operating system. So over the next decade, it it will look like it's coming out of nowhere, but it will eventually dominate once a few major programs are available in gnu/linux.

  • GNU/Linux is free software and freedom is the important factor here. The fact that it is far, far superior to Windows and MacOS only makes it so much sweeter. But that's just a bonus. For me, it's all about the feeling of controlling more aspects of my computing myself, as opposed to trusting in big companies who, in the end, care mostly about profit, not the user.

  • Linux is Better period

  • @cbowman61

I keep windows because I like gaming.

  • @zZGzHD You keep windows because you have... AMD card... right? :)

  • @lin545 the open source radeon drivers have come a long way. framecapping quake3 is always enjoyable.

  • @staufinc Ow, I know radeon/fglrx :) I have once seeked out and bought overpriced 4770 especially for opensource driver. The thing about AMD is simply love/hate tragedy. They open up pieces of hardware, yet they refuse to take it serious - so you have drivers that are only usable on lower price budget. Bridgeman uses vista on his machine, lol. And fglrx.. sucks even today. This is why i have nvidia now.. and for lower machines - intel. A love/hate tragedy. Not my meal :)

  • @lin545 the only issue i have observed with the hd6870 on radeon drivers is how it runs the squirrel-cage fan at 100%, which is amazingly loud.

  • @staufinc and it runs at 1/4 of performance,.. and 32bit libs are missing,... and there is no video acceleration or opencl,... and amd completely ignores your decision of buying their card for their linux support. The drivers have come long way, but way would be much shorter if amd would really stand behind its drivers. Which is sick, because 8/10 of nvidia people would drop their card if amd runs good on opensource... a poll from year 2007 or so.

  • @lin545 at least amd is releasing documentation on their cards to help the development of the radeon drivers, whereas the nouveau developers are having a much more difficult time.

  • @staufinc not "much", but difficult. True.

  • @lin545 nvidia doesnt release any sort of documentation for their chipsets. and definitely not any source code.

  • @staufinc nvidia has produces a lot of code for X11 which is opensource and has released cuda compiler which is opensource. It also does not hinder opensource development. The reason why they don´t want opensource driver is because they are discrete graphics card producers, and this cards require quality driver, this means a lot of work, and they want to *share* the same driver for many OSes and at same time keep DRM path unaffected.

  • @staufinc The biggest showstopper is AMD really NOT interested in their opensource driver. Their primary goal with opensource was NOT releasing ANY driver, but rather relying on community to do the JOB for them. I do not BS you, my friend; this are words of main AMD foss lead. Currently I prefer Intel over non-powerfull chips, because Intel maximizes almost everything in their opensource driver; and nvidia for powerful chips, because their driver squeezes everything too. Hard choices.

  • how is the email adress from this guy??

  • Ubuntu is jk

  • @ntp1789 I'm a little surprised at that. Around 40 percent of our server farm uses Linux (Red-had, Oracle and Suse). Most of them are application platforms and database servers although our DNS DHCP and Directory services are all linux based. Comparing equivalent MSSQL based platforms (which we also use) I would put my money on Linux everytime. In terms of ease of administration I would say they are on a par with each other.

  • As someone who has used Windows and Linux for several years, and has had college courses on both, I can easily say that Linux is a more stable, more secure, more efficient, and more cost-effective operating system than Windows ever will be.

  • You can run windows games using virtualbox(supports directx9 128Mbyte vid ram) or wine or playonlinux although there are graphical issues but getting better. Linux(ubuntu, fedora, opensuse, mint distros or freebsd(not linux)) operating system isn't bad alternative to windows. If developers concentrated on linux kernel, gui, software side than it would really become a threat to microsoft.

  • linux is still buggy to use but I think the problems arises from the updates. I updated my ubuntu 11.10.0.0.13 to 11.10.0.0.15 and then it would not boot anymore it just froze at the splash screen but was able to get into shell and still could not fix it. Now moved to linux mint 12 which is basically same as ubuntu but comes with all plugins for multimedia. I ran visual studio 6 and other windows apps in wine and it seems faster than native windows.

  • Hey man stop making these funny faces!!!its irritating!!!

  • I've been using Ubuntu since 2007!!! I left Windows for the Penguin. Lol

  • @V1ctorM4nuel luinex mint ubuntu get a bit much for for my pc

  • @V1ctorM4nuel Ĩ'm Tux-ed too, since 2005

  • i love mint but my ipad doesn't love mint.

is there any software that can let mint see the ipad so i can upload vids to my ipad. i know you can use rthymbox to import your music.

    but what about video?

i hate windows and don't want to go back

  • Having had a university course on UNIX/Linux and spent quite some time with different versions and gotten to know the terminal decently well i can say that i really find windows to be the best option for everyone not looking for a server. Windows has more to offer average user and it actually(from my experience) bugs less often then ubuntu.

  • @marcusrehn you have NO idea whatsoever.

  • @lin545 tell me then, why should the everyday user use linux?

  • @marcusrehn Thats great question that you could answer ONLY if you have actually installed even single gnu/linux-based OS for everyday user.

And I will give you another hint: to compare the systems you should have used them both for long period of time as well as know their history, their impact on market and their impact on society.

  • @lin545 Everyday users simply wont care anout anything other then, is it user friendly, can i run this or that program and if its pretty. I'm telling you right now that even ubuntu will piss most lazy users of.

  • @marcusrehn Look, I have guys who MOANED: PLEASE KILL WINDOWS, Install LINUX MINT. And I did that! Installed Linux Mint 12. + SB i3-2105,8gigs ram,0.5 Tb. Why?

Previously I KILLED WINDOWS XP on another machine and installed Linux Mint 9 on it. AII-240/2gigs Ram/8300 IGP. They played around it, they liked it. It needs ZERO care, it is FUZZY-LESS. Both are HOME machines, DO EVERYTHING - from games, over office, online to communication.

And me? I Love linux because I HAVE FREE TIME.

  • @marcusrehn For time being I have already installed 5 Linux-powered desktops for my relatives and not a single machine needed ANY care. Previously, prior Linux, I serviced over 15 machines with windows - and I had to periodically visit them and service them!

Everything I did was non-profit, but hardware/software were legal. Now, I encourage people to donate money if they first-install and they do it. They get everything for free, no drm, no headaches, no fuzz for me, no malware.

  • @lin545 Okej, what disto would you recommend for your everyday user? Ubuntu bugs and a lot of distros are a murder to install non-opensource software such as flashplayer and various multimedia formats.

  • @marcusrehn Linux Mint. Ubuntu does not bug on LTS. Flash has open specifications, you can run it via gnash or use binary, or use HTML5 - you have choice. I don't know any codec that is "non-opensource". MP3, H264 are opensource, but patented - this makes difference only in US.

  • @lin545 Installing that is still a hazzle on a lot of distros, but yea its not hard on ubuntu and you get a lot of the stuff right on install but still. And Ubuntu does bug more so then windows 7 at any pc i have seen and every kid in class hated on them when we had to use it for a mips programming exercise. I hear a lot of good things about mint, but its ubuntu based so im not that exited.

  • @marcusrehn First of all, I would like to repeat that my vision of better home linux-based desktop is linux mint, not ubuntu. Ubuntu was my first linux distro (ubuntu studio 8.04 LTS), and because it was LTS and I had nvidia gfx it was very very easy in terms that everything worked out of the box. Then came non-lts and I saw misunderstanding why they push unstable versions; and then Mark Shuttleworth himself confirmed that Ubuntu is OpenCore, not opensource.

  • @marcusrehn LTS versions are usually very stable, as are servers. Other things is that sometimes user does not have automation of certain tasks in place, but has to "dig in the registry to enable it" - if it were windows. Obviously digging in registry was not something new for windows user, so I don´t see reason for sorrows. Yes, linux mint is one of distros that does it "usually" right, even better than macosx.

  • @marcusrehn "And Ubuntu does bug more so then windows 7" I completely disagree with you here, because windows 7 was only usable on SP1, after many thousands of development hours on stabilization and code freeze. Ubuntu´ model does not feature term stability for non-LTS releases, so you cannot compare.

All NEGATIVE sides that windows 7 has, remain in place and it looses STRAIGHT as home desktop. E.g. at work one of my collegues uses w7 and AFTER 3 weeks it managed to update to sp1!

  • why do people fight about this? why does it matter if one is better? Just install all of them lol.

  • Linux is amazing operating system. yeah one of the first livecd myself was Knoppix "debian" linux distro KDE oh yeah.. but yeah people call me a linux noob because i use Ubuntu 11.10 i think its just amazing OS and i'm not linux noob been working with linux for over 14 years man. slackware, opensuse, redhat, fodora, centos etc... elive(enlightenment) etc.. Linux is better than windows in security just the gaming downfall but other than that its #1.. if u like Mac OS u will like Ubuntu same shit

  • @ipodpunker Yeah, I do find it funny how the hardcore linux fanboys call ubuntu users "noobs". I like that it's just really simple and easy to set up and use, and looks really nice. I am really tempted to give gNewSense a try though, anything with the seal of approval direct from Richard Stallman has got to be worth giving a shot.

  • FUCK WINDOWS , LINUX IS THE BEST..............AND IT IS FREE NOT LIKE MONEY HUNGRY FUCKING WINDOWS, GET LINUX MINT, PINGUY OS OR ZORIN OS

  • i'd like to see an idiots guide to operating Linux and how to do some really basic stuff perhaps from the command line. I used to have a number of arcade machine (Megatouch) that ran Linux and they were ALWAYS better than their Windows counterparts. Linux also runs the 8086 chipset and derivatives thereof a lot cooler than Windows

  • @computersolutions164 Check this out: /watch?v=x_R_JSiupzo

Just don't get too distracted by the hotness :D

  • I like linux but it is to hard to become advanced user in it

  • @lockergnome whats the name of the arcade distro of linux?

  • Linux minte

  • lubuntu good

  • mac os x is beautifull for home and watching movies and stuff but for gaming it sucks

thats why im using windows for my games and stuff but i have imac for school and other things

  • @Atmixx WindOSux X would be born

  • I wonder what would happend if Linux, Windows and Mac was working together

  • @Atmixx There would never be progress in any of them and it would overall give us a worse experience. Companies try harder when they have competition and give us better products!

  • @awolter333 I understand, i just wanted to just make my own fantasy about it

  • @ryuchanlee almost 99% of hackers live in houses, you must hate houses too dont you?

  • This guy must have an IQ of 50.

  • he is right about customization. Ubuntu 10.04 LTS dominates that area

  • Ye we know its better.

  • And even that Linux operating system is GPLv2 (only v2) licensed and is so on free software, but same thing is with XNU operating system what Apple use in iOS and OS X.

XNU operating system is licensed with "Apple Public Source License, versio 2" and OSI and FSF has agreed that it is free software license (not just open source).

All XNU operating system parts from microkernel to servers are free software (still incompatible with GPL). So every Apple customer does use open (/free) source OS!

  • @TheFri13 Apple is a lock in and vendor lock in. So renders your statement useless.

  • @Justinba1010 Nope, it does not.... Unless you can proof that XNU and Linux operating systems are not licensed as I say.... And that you can not.

  • @Justinba1010 Don't send me personal messages, reply in the comments. What makes you think you can just tell people what they can and cannot do?

What makes you think that I "have to" respect anybody or anything?

Who do you think you are?

What makes you better than everybody else?

  • There are "no things" what are "based to Linux" or "Linux-based". There are software systems using Linux operating system.

Linux is just a operating system, it is not user interface, it is not application or any system software.... Android, Harmattan, Tizen and many other use Linux as operating system.

People can not see Linux or use it directly, they need always somekind other hardware or software what offers the user interface to use computer device.

  • @TheFri13 Linux is a kernel, not an OS. An OS is a set of programs that use the kernel. Thats the first thing you learn in the OS World. So get your facts straight.

  • @Justinba1010 If you compile the source code of Linux, you can also use it on a computer., so I would say, it's an operating system.

  • @aheendwhz1 Ok, but only the commands will be usable :p. The programs are what allow you to do stuff quicker, and visualize.

  • you're crey

  • i had an old laptop......linux doesnt boot on it as it says hardware doesnt work with it so linux is shit

  • Another huge advantage of Linux is that it's much faster than Windows.

Right now I mostly use Linux Mint 12 but when I boot into Windows the difference in speed is very apparent.

  • @BigBobsh2o Mint is about 3 times faster speed in my experiense in general to any windows. Vista is special; Mint and Ubuntu is about 4-6 times faster than that.

  • anyone know the distro He was talking about for gaming ??

  • @wingnut4427 yea

  • @wingnut4427 i'm thinking it's puppy arcade. it's got a ton of emulators built in.

  • @blueovalfan23 thanks !! Just found it ! :D YAY !!!

  • 2:07 hilarious face

  • Knoppix was the first distro I ever used. I loved it 'cause I could use my laptop while my HDD was dead.

  • thumbs up if u r watching it on "ubuntu"!!!!!!!!

  • I'm a PC gamer, so...Windows. I do like linux though. I love putting it on old laptops and breathing fresh life into them. K/ubuntu is great for even moderately old hardware, and for the really old stuff Lubuntu, Puppy, and DSL.

  • I am astonished that everybody says that Linux is rapidly getting a market share but I can see that for several years now it has not moved a bit from where it is, namely around 1% mark, as is shown at netmarketshare.kom and gs.statcounter.kom ?

Can you tell us where is this Linux 'dark matter' hidden on the Internet and how can it be seen?

  • Embedded devices or App devices, such as Android (Google) is where Unix/Linux took off.

OS's on PC and Mac will be at war for a long time. A new war will happen once ReactOS gets themselves together.

  • @CrewRite Yes, I am aware that many devices are Linux based. Also, I am aware that many web sites (30-50%, if I am right, or maybe even more) is based on Linux. That is all OK. I just wanted to hear if somehow a revolution happened in the desktop linux world, which linux people often do mention, praise and express hopes for but I am not seeing it around me at all.

  • I love linux =)

  • osx is linux!
