I have seen one of these autogyros at the Imperial War Museum in Duxford England. It looked like quite the deathmachine - esp when towed behind a submarine! The pilot was either very brave, or very stupid
Germans weren't into the idea of suicide missions and the 163 wasn't thought of as expendable, so with its 5 min flight time that would guarantee loss of aircraft due to very high landing speed
I seen this on the History Channel WW2 series. The episode was on submarine warfare in the Atlantic. I was amazed to see a helicopter in the second world war albeit a gyrocopter
My brother Markus Bott had been tortured during five and a half years by the German BND, which is the former GESTAPO. I recorded more than 100 videotapes which ended up in the legal system. My brother was tortured during 1.5 years despite several legal procedures pending. Markus Bott was assassinated on July 11th 2009 because of our homepage, linked on my channel, and our book Der Totalitäre Staat. If my homepage disappears, the BND will have assassinated me as well.
Hitler had the best toys. It's a good thing because often they overspent on R&D when conventional forces would have been more economical. The "toys" may have cost them the war.
Well .. most of us would have nothing, cause we would be smoke (including most of the germans) Asians, afrcans, most south and north americans .. smoke! Most europeans .. either smoke or soldiers in a never ending war. The plans allready were made and printed to the last order.
later on they where fitted with 60 PS Walter Mikron. After WW2 they where brought to England and France. Besides the misapprehension Helicopters where not developed first by Sikorsky and Bell. First Serial produced Helicopter was the Focke-Achgelis Fa 223 which later on become godfather of the Chinook
Mmm... wouldnt want to be one of the guys assigned to "catch" it on the landing if the wind shifted or the pilot had an undsteady hand. Could make for a really bad haircut.
There is a complete example at Duxford and there is another at Cobham Hall - home of the reserve collection of the Fleet Air Arm Museum - open to public in October 2009, check website for exact date.
Sorry, but it is an autogyro. It is completely un-powered and the rotors generate lift through auto-rotation which is the definition of an autogyro. There is no engine power applied to the rotors whatsoever. It has no engine!
The Fa 330 was tested by the Allies towed behind cars etc.
It can not fly at all if there is no wind or tow vehicle to make it travel forwards through the air for launch. Once airborne it can autorotate back down without a tow cable but it's not a helicopter.
These reconnaisance gyros didn't even have a motor. Imagine the ship slowing down for some reason... You'd get a free and involuntary bath in the sea. :-)
The Japanese were flying gyros during the war off the south coast off Western Australia. I do think these were actual powered gyros and not the tow behind kite type. Thanks for posting the video. Very rare bit of footage.
LOL sort of a reverse of the ww1 airships. They would lower a pod with a guy in it below the clouds and tell them where the bombs were hitting, (also the only place they could smoke LOL)
Bonne video pour comprendre les gyrogliders ou cerfs volants autogires. J ai fabriqué "un cerf volant autogire" a 3 puis 4 et enfin 5 pales , il porte un appareil photo numerique, a voir sur youtube: sepulcrack
I heard the "spotter" flying the Autogyro had to be careful how he worded his reports, saying "British destroyer heading straight for us" would result in the deck crew jumping back in the sub to crash dive leaving the pilot to jump into the sea and take his chances!
Thats very nice, i would be very very concerned in that gyro to find the way back to the submarine :) I mean he could easily forget the exact position over the sea.
It wouldn't be a problem because the gyrocopter has no motor. It is a glider and so like a kite, relies on being attached by cable to the submarine and having a seabreeze lift it into the air or have the forward motion of submarine pass enough airflow over the blades.
Thanks, it was from a tiny mpeg I found on the web. It would be nice to find what dvd it came from to see a high res version. Probably something about U-boats I suspect.
Oh, German power very good job.. thanks :D

@Afrocanuk - Me-163 needs too much runway for takeoff and landing.
Now, a Bachem Ba-349 - that might just work.

It's lucky Germany is a fairly small country and had Hitler as their military leader because they were definitely leading edge in technology.

Kind of makes you wonder if Nazi Germany succeeded, what kind of toys would we have today?

@liOVERLOADil they would never have been able to succeed they were after too many countries, the whole world would have attacked them.
