  • Good version?? This is amazing! Thanks so very much for posting. John Denver has a great version as well here.

  • @cchristophercree The Press Gang now long disbanded ( Sean Corcoran , Tom Crean ...and who else ?)sang this .in the 60s. They sang in the style of the Voice Squad of more recent years

  • Amazing!

  • It's time to stand up for Blair mountain!

    Damn those bloody mine owners!

  • Oh, Pete! You helped me grow up. What a lovely video and killer song. Thank you.

  • This is wonderful. Thanks for posting.

  • the byrds did a wonderful job of recording this in 1965 but pete"s own version here is simply terriffic !

  • @TheBabyboomkidof53 I prefer the Byrds one myself but I got respect for this version because it still sounds good : )

  • Cymru am byth!

    Proud.

  • This is such a wonderful perfmance by Pete - and the audience are wonderful -sat there like they are in the dentists waiting room waiting to have their teeth ripped out without anaethetic - right up till the end when they errupt into such heartfelt clapping . fantastic

  • Quite probably my favorite song. The bells in Wales, like the mine whistles told the population of some disaster in the pits.Petes' haunting song gives voice and conscience to those bells as they rang out yet another sacrifice on the altar of capitalism

  • Happy 91st, Pete! You've added so much to our lives.

  • @Mjollnir50 My friend, he is actually 92 now! Would you believe it.

  • one of my heroes. I have been privileged to see him in person a number of times in my life.

  • wonderful. been listening to Pete since I was 5 (and I'm 57)....

  • This is so bad azz! Pete rocks!

  • sup Mr.D

  • Just a beautiful rendition from Mr. Pete Seeger. I believe he is the hardest working man in show business, no offense to James Brown!

  • Just some info for you all, this is an adaptation of some lines from an Idris Davies Poem ' Gwalia deserta' Gwalia being the traditional Salurian name for Wales now 'Cymru' Idris Davies himself was born and lived for most of his life in Rhymney.

If you like this then check out the 1980's Alarm version.

  • @darling67 You might have seen John Denver playing "Bells of Rhymney" when he was younger (with glasses). You might want to see him play it about 10 years later (no glasses, white suit). He had definitely matured as a guitarist. I'm not saying he was better than Seeger, but it can be seen that Denver was much more than a mediocre talent. His clear strong voice has an impressive dynamic range although I like the accent that american Seeger adds.

  • Oh my God this just has to be one of the most spine tingling songs of all time. It really makes the hairs on my arms stand up . Thank you Mr Seeger you are a genius

  • Absolutely the definitive version.

  • i live within the boundries of these bells

  • John Denver sang it much better by far!!!!

  • @sedona05 John Denvers version sucked. John Denver wishes he could fondle the balls of Pete Seeger just so some of his talent could somehow get on him (john denver drinks cum). His version is so sterile and boring. Pete Seeger isn't some girly bitch like john denver and he doesn't need glasses.

  • @TheHIV123 And there was no way you could have expressed your dislike of John Denver WITHOUT homophobia?

Btw...Denver was a breeder. He was married several times. If the guy was actually gay, we'd have HEARD about it by now.

He wasn't that great a musician...but that didn't have anything to do with his freaking sex life. Get out of the Fifties, dude.

  • Every time there is a mine disaster anywhere in the world, I hear this song in my head (Byrds version). The last one, in West Virginia, motivated me to learn it on guitar. So sad, and timely. When will they ever learn? When will they ever learn?

Thanks Pete, you are the Beacon of our collective conscience (pun intended). I attended your concert in Newburgh last year...what a knockout version you did of Guantanamera with your grandson, Tao Rodriquez-Seeger... he ain't to shabby either.

  • Check out the version by Judy Collins. She does it very, very well.

  • That was amazing! I never heard this version before. Of course I also love the Bryds version as well. I'm also saddened that music like this cannot exist today. Musically, today is truly the dark ages.

  • Thanks for posting. Am really enjoying this version by Pete Seeger. The only other version I love was performed by the Alarm. Had it on tape once upon a time.

  • Pete is a wonderful man! He was always willing to donate his time and enormous talents to help striking coal miners and other working folks... I cherish the memory of him holding my young daughter on his lap at a folk festival at Pipestem, WV back in th early 1980s...!

  • Oh how good is this? Brilliant. Thank you so much for posting. I have a version on CD, but to see the great man live is a real treat.

  • An awesome song by a truly original talent.

  • I love you Pete Seeger!

  • Seeger is the best.

    thanx!

  • Great words by Idris Davies, great tune by Pete Seeger, belated Happy 90th Birthday Pete

  • Filmed in Australia in 1965

  • Melbourne, Australia in 1963 not 65 :)

  • That's some great guitar playing.
