@lucksox all the perspex in my cube is routed in to the necessary depth so it sits flush. Probably best seen at 2:20, highly recommend using a vacuum cleaner while mass routing and a good dust mask
@lucksox mostly MDF shaped with a router and a few jigs. lighting is as custom as you want it, leds to fluros- microcontrollers etc etc. this sub is ported 400w 12" tuned to 30 Hz
Hello, I'm seriously interested in re-creating your weighted companion cube subwoofer. I have some questions. I would greatly appreciate any advice you could offer.
@jakenator13 believe me I have thought about it :) Hopefully in the next couple weeks I will have the arduino powering all the led arrays in some cool pattern, still waiting for parts :(
dude. you are totally awesome. we all miss the companion cube. when the companion cube was burned we cried.... when the companion cube was given back at the end of portal 2 we rejoiced. thank you. so much. (sorry for the spoiler....)
Seriously man, you are AWESOME. The care you took when making it, your skill and patience, i can't even begin to say how proud I am to be seeing this.
@bruzwa the cost of the materials the wood, leds, resistors, paint, parts for the subwoofer, the materials that held it all together. that sort of thing. do you have a general idea of their cost or even a list of materials? that was more along the lines of my inquiry. if you could send me any of that info i would be greatly appreciative thank you
@EmperorMaximus17 I have an approximate cost of materials alone which is still climbing because I'm working on the lighting system at the moment but I'm sitting on about $2k which doesn't include 80% of the MDF (which I already had) or the man hours to create and install everything.
@BicycleRider09 do companion cubes get jealous? glados says that they will never threaten to stab you but who knows if there is two of them in the same room
@bruzwa Hmmmmm a fair question. But, I think that they would get along if they were given the same amount of attention and played music they both liked lol
@daveyrich89 Sound test coming soon, I have the sub running with my z5500's but I need a better cam to record all the low Hz sound, + I would like to have the lighting addition finished (arduino) but that may take longer than anticipated. Probably just do a sound test, soon though mate
@juliengarneau Cheers, I thought it would be fitting touch, and being inside the box you can't see how dodgie my art really is lol better stick to carpentry I think ;)
@bruzwa Yeah i do imagine those beeing a bit tricky to make, specialy if you want them to well u know. Open and close like in the game. Wich of course would be a waste not to do when you have started. But it would be pretty sick to be in that living room looking at it.
@Sakk0 maybe using plastic moulds or better yet fibreglass casting it could work hmmm maybe in the future. Turn the power on to the systems and the turrets say 'there you are' lol
@bruzwa fibreglass might work. Easy to mold and easy to work with. Trick would be the sides of the turrets to get them to go automaticly inn and out via a button or sumth. Could do it simple though with just rails and magnets to keep them inn and click system to get them out. But your idea with buildt inn voice would be awesome with the automatic activation of the turret. Damn, Im getting excited here myself. And i got some spare time. hmmmm ;P
@Sakk0 that could work, someone has made one that senses movement and speaks! bit of modifying and you could have a turret satellite. Worth looking into I think but one thing at a time for me
@sunakotsubaki maybe I should look into bulk production, shipping would be astronomical though- the companion cube weighs a ton, I might weigh it at some time ;)
Sir or ma'am, we are sending you a cake and real confetti. You are amazing, I just shed tears. That is the most beautiful encarnation of love I've ever seen in my life
@guitarPRO967 the total build took about 2-3 months but I'm not completely done with it yet- thinking of an arduino circuit for controlling individual lights and I need to make a small stand to elevate the cube from the ground- was thinking maybe a calibration button... ;)
@TheyCallMeInsane to tell the truth mate I didn't really have any plans- I made the box, then proportioned all the pieces to look as close as possible by drawing them on the cube, then made jigs to mass produce the corner detail
@fredotron depends on how big you want it to be, MDF is the choice of wood and jigs- make lots of jigs to simplify all the shaping needed to be done. price will vary to the size and if you want it to light up, well more cost.. Sorry mate not for sale, and if I did I would be like the fastest test subject to euthanise my weighted companion cube
@Cloud6556 Soon I hope. I'm working on a unit that will make all the leds sound reactive and I need a better cam (one with a decent mic) to pick up all the low Hz sound
thanks mate, I did experiment with el wire and perspex but couldn't get it to light evenly :( so 2500 leds later... you can get a sound activated kit for the el wire too, works surprisingly well
How did you secure the Perspex?
lucksox 1 day ago
@lucksox good old PVA glue, sticks awesome to MDF :)
bruzwa 1 day ago
Hey, I started my companion cube. All I have right now is a box with a door. How did you do the perspex and the rim on the Perspex?
lucksox 2 days ago
@lucksox all the perspex in my cube is routed in to the necessary depth so it sits flush. Probably best seen at 2:20, highly recommend using a vacuum cleaner while mass routing and a good dust mask

lucksox 3 weeks ago
What is your box made of? Was that a casting mold that you put on your box? How did you do the lighting? Was the Subwoofer ported?
lucksox 3 weeks ago
@lucksox mostly MDF shaped with a router and a few jigs. lighting is as custom as you want it, leds to fluros- microcontrollers etc etc. this sub is ported 400w 12" tuned to 30 Hz
