  • hi, though the video shows that mumbai has banned plastic. the truth is that mumbai is full of plastic bags

  • I live in South Australia where you cant get plastic bags anymore in shopping centres at all,you need to take your own re usable bags or purchase them in store. Why hasnt this theory taken off with other states or countries? We were given a transition period so everyone had time to adapt to no more plastic bags before the cut off date. If the option is not there then plastic bags are no longer going to be the problem!

  • HIPPIES

  • I'll bag the bags if I can be part of your fight club.

  • it is not only the plastic bag sadley, also the bottles, the plastic lighters plastic toys and much more... the plastic breaks in smal pieces and is eaten bij marine life and birds.. it is so sad...

  • bringing your own bags to the grocery store has been going on for years in poland, and in america it just recently began, because it was "cool".... america is way behind on being green, organic, etc...

  • Being 100% green doesn't require any bags.

  • Crazy how something that is seen as a convenience does so much to inconvenience the Earth.

  • I bring groceries home in my medium sized knapsack. Gotta make sure the product in question doesn,t leak, ooze or spill. I do go more often but the market z within walking distance. I spread the message amongst as many ppl as I can about the dangers of plastics in general. over packaging is also a problem in many sectors. point it out & don't buy wasteful products such as prepackaged avocados, it's got it's own package

  • The less plastic we use, the less oil we need, and isn't that one of our goals as well? Canvas or reusable bags are easy to keep in your car and you can take them into ANY store to use them rather than the store provided ones. Our store actually gives you a nickel credit for each of your own bags that you use instead of theirs! Makes sense to me.

  • This video is very convincing.

Thank god people are waking up to this plastic issue!

  • Hey Norton!!! I'm so amazed that they not mentioning that grocery stores can use the biodegradable plastic! Plastic that dissolves in nature! We do not have to use bad plastic, we can have our grocery stores buy the recycle plastic bags & that solves that HUGE problem! Why aren't we discussing this??? We all should stay away from grocery stores that do not use them!!! Lets get on the badwagon for those who do not make the effort...Why aren't the stores buying this type for us to use!!!

  • Please check out our blog on plastic bags at bagwithcare(DOT)blogspot(DOT)com

  • There are companies who already make biodegradable plastic, why aren't the stores buying them for us to use!!!!!!!

  • What if Edward Norton pulled a Joaquin Phoenix and fell off the stage and pulled out all stops on the media and made a shrine and created a complete farce and then came back with brilliant rap career.

  • I have to admit that in my country ban the plastic bag campaign is becoming popular. It's an important step but when I see how people put into those bags milk, water, bread all wrapped in foil i sometimes question this whole idea. One of the producers od mineral water has joined forces with a humanitarian organization in my country and raise money to build wells for people of Sudan. All we have to do is buy a plastic bottle with a mineral water in it.

  • how about hemp material made bags?

  • "Similarly, we would not have to reuse a product at all if we never had to "need" it in the first place; which is where "reduce" comes from." That quote insinuates there is no "need" for plastic bags, I think you worded wrong, or else I read it wrong. Either way, plastic bags has a need, we as society need to accept and educate. It surprises me the amount of trash that is littered, and when you truly look at the trash, very little is it of bags (paper or plastic) but bottles, cigarettes & cans

  • To Edward: Instead of "kicking" the plastic bag, you should have picked it up and RECYCLED it. the point is not to "ban" a product for being too popular, but to be conscious about how we dispose of the product. By reusing and/or recycling!

If we want to compare the big picture apples to apples, out of all plastic, paper and canvas bags, plastic is one with the SMALLEST carbon footprint. Let's change our behavioral patterns. Most countries who ban plastic are third world countries>less education

  • Indeed, I would agree with you that reusing and recycling is important; but the reason why the mnemonic is "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" is because that is the ideal priority.

We would not have to recycle something if we could simply reuse it instead, as recycling (though more beneficial than disposal) requires energy to process.

Similarly, we would not have to reuse a product at all if we never had to "need" it in the first place; which is where "reduce" comes from.

  • Joe,

There is a "need" for plastic bags. They make for great trash can liners, pet duty, reusing for all types of chores around the house, and for reusing purposes such as groceries and lunches (just like canvas bags). However, canvas bags have less of a purpose than plastic bags.

I'll use my canvas bags, but I'll use my plastic bags much more.

The word disposable is strong and has carried along way. Plastic bags are reusable, be removing "disposable" we are educating people to do the same.

  • I don't recall ever saying that there is no need for plastic bags.

I think you misinterpreted what I said. I said we should reduce the amount we use; and use only as much as we "need."

  • Actually, there is no NEED for plastic bags. There are biodegradable "plastic" bags if you must, for garbage liners. The old petroleum based bags need to go, ALL of them. It's amazing how easy it is to go w/out them once you try.

  • there is one possible solution for this problem is tht ......

Do you know why is NASA exploring mars..

I think they r doin this in order to make mars a new earth and if possible all humans hav to leave earth bcoz of global warming, deforestation, and nature problems.....

REPLY IF THIS IS GOIN TO BE TRUE OR LEAVE A COMMENT.

  • animals are stupid

    LOL

  • The next person who uses a plastic bag, gets a...gets a lead salad, do you hear me!?!?!

    Best Ed Norton line ever.

  • is that in this video?

  • :(.....sadly no, it isn't.

  • it should've been

I guess you must send Edward a note so that he could fix that;)

  • Well done!

  • why am I trying to watch EVERY national geographic video xD ?

  • you're an animal

  • I don't think this guy is Edward Norton. He doesn't look or sound anything like the guy on The Honeymooners TV show.

  • great stuff

  • so true =]

  • He's so cute when he's being smart and caring.

  • since you like him so much, try spelling his name right...

    its edward norton

  • Edward Norington is the man!!

  • I agree with patzilla. Our government is filled with so many lies. how could we trust it? i thought this was democracy.

  • Do you guys have this in Spanish or Spanish subtitles???

  • I had a nightmare after learning of this problem. My dream was about recycling programs covertly dumping everything into the sea instead of actually reusing our waste. As I type this, I'm wondering if this is potentially happening in the Atlantic.

  • Many grocery stores would love to implement this.. one of the biggest expenses is buying all those damn bags. it's really the customer's fault this isn't enforced.

  • Fred Meyer's, the supermarket, is already going to make everyone bring reusable bags to the store

  • awesome video, i will start picking up bags

  • why are china and taiwan listed as two different regions

  • currently are designated as 2 different nations.

  • I love this

  • In all honesty I have a question. For years we have heard this, don't use plastic bags, well what is alternative would you suggest for (how do I put this nicely) cleaning up your animals waste? That is why we always use plastic and we have not figured out another reasonable alternative yet. Any greenies out there have a solution for us?

  • Hi tolehaey

There are newly invented bio-materials which have similar characteristics as plastic that can be used.

When going to the grocery store you could use any kind of bag that is reuseable made from cloth for instance. The idea is not to get a _new_ bag every time you buy something. Re-use them! Even the plastic bags you already have. Re-use the until they fall apart.

    Rgds TTR

  • I lived in Moscow for 2 years, I've never seen so many plastic bags in my life! There's a real problem there!

  • Paper > Plastic.

I don't care what you say.

  • I'd like to see his problem with paper bags, which he never got to since his rant on plastic over shadowed everything.

  • I thought the picture of trees when he mentioned Paper or plastic was good enough for most people to deduce what he was implying. Apparently not...

  • totally

  • Happy Earth Day everyone!

Thank you all for all that you do to make a difference in this world. One person can make a difference!

    ~Peace

P.S. Let's make Earth Day happen every day!

  • I agree, we should drop the plastic bags.

Now, if I can only remember to bring my reusable bags when I go shopping. I keep forgetting to bring them along. Old bad habit that I need to stop.

We all need to do something for the earth and the environment.

  • In Facebook, search Causes.

There's a Drop The Plastic Bag cause there that is really up the alley to this video.

  • All this "earth day" nonsense is a real cute idea and all, but it's such a waste of time. People join in to feel like they're making a difference, when in reality we have so much more to worry about than the conservation of endangered species or the environment. Millions of dollars are donated to keep some fucking wild animal alive or a bunch of trees intact while humans live in poverty elsewhere in the world. Ahh... liberals... you silly bunch, you. =]

  • How stupit can you be?

Earth day is about keeping our planet alive, not just some animals or plants. Humans can get out of poverty themself, but we do not have to destroy the planet while doing it.

  • It's not just some animals or plants. It's ourselves too! By throwing away any kind of garbage in the nature, we destroyes for every living creature on this planet! They say humans are the most clever animal. But we're not. If the animals and plants dies, we will too! They say our generation might not even survive if we keep doing this. Give it a thought!

  • Mm, yes. Lets use life as an excuse to not do anything at all. Compromise, not sacrifice.

  • There seems to be a lot of questions about plastic bags...if anyone cares there is a website called droptheplasticbag.

  • damn rightt

  • My mom has a shopping bag, she's doing right and I will do the same

  • people like you can start dying right now. WE WONT MIND AND MORE IMPORTANTLY WE WONT CARE. AND WHEN YOU DIE, NO ONE WILL MISS YOU, NO ONE WILL EVEN REMEMBER YOUR NAME AS IF YOU NEVER EXISTED. SO DIE FEGGET!

  • Its about time! BYOB! I make my own bags out of human fear.

  • Norton is the man.

  • TheFantasticAtheist, You don't care?

  • well of course you don't. just like you hope there is no afterlife.

Another simple step would be to shoot off idiots, ie: TheFantasticAtheist

  • Why don't you get those bamboo-made shopping bags? They're like 10 dollars-a-pop.

  • or make your own hehe

  • okay - there are alternatives to using plastic bags to bring things home - got it -no problem.

Unfortunately I live in a large building and use plastic bags to throw out the trash. Can anyone tell me of alternatives for appartment dwellers re: this? I'd like to get rid of bags but regulations are against dropping loose garbage down the shute. How are other communities handling this?

  • I think the video is aimed to specifically eliminate plastic shopping bags because of their tendency to be discarded directly into the environment. Plastic bags from trash would probably have a hard time getting from a landfill to the ocean.

  • we now use paper bags instead of plastic here in sf, which can also be used as a trash bag because thats what i use it for.. and the paper bag has the handles for carrying, just a FYI. another option is to buy the shopping bag that is reusable.

  • the thing is how can i throw my rubbish without plastic bag??? :(

  • I have so many of my own bags by now, but I have to remember each time to bring them!!! I'm trying!

  • Las bolsas de plastico demoran años en acabarse, es mejor usar bolsas de papel.

  • Well if Tyler Durden wants me to... Ah I'm just kidding, we already use our own bags.

  • woohoo!!!!!!!!!!1 i agree 100%!111

  • Thanks for sharing.

  • lol how bout creating biodegradable bags =P which i think do exist 0.0

  • One way:

Make plastic bags at grocery stores $50 each.

Money for plastic bag disposal, and balance out the rich people.

  • plastic is cheap that why people use them. :(

  • how can we reverse the damage instead of prolonging the inevitable?

  • you can not reverse the damage, you can only prolong the inevitable.

  • or you can prevent further damage

  • so your are trying to seem wise. Would you rather suffer now or later? Maybe if it was later technology would be advanced enough to resolve this conflict.

  • lexserr, it seems like you are the one trying to seem wise. I was responding to someone else comment on how we can reverse the damage. We can never reverse the damage we have done to ourselves. New technologies would have new problems. We can only prolong our survival. Extinction is inevitable.

  • fight club

  • I'm starting to wonder if Ed Norton has stock options in the Canvas Bag industry...

  • i guarentee he does.

  • F***** THANK THIS VIDEO!!!

  • the answer is not neithor, the answer is paper

  • think of the treessssssss!

  • i think it is a greaat idea, we bought reusable bags from our local grocery store- the only problem is sometimes i forget to bring them out of my car with me when i shop- hehe. I'd like to see them reinforced in the dress stores too tho instead of just groceries

  • He means a canvas bag ass hats. A plastic bag will work fine AS LONG AS YOU RE USE IT!

  • did u know that plastic bag can survive for 1000 years?

  • and chewing gum for a 100 years... seriously!

i've been byob for some time now... every little bit counts... its drops that make an ocean!

  • xtiger357

    bullshit

  • ok im a liberal all day but if any of you have ever worked at a supermarket you know how annoying it is to see some older the hell ladie walk up with 2 carts of food and then she says, "oh no i won't make it easy on you, i brought my own bags". then i kill her.

  • what does being a liberal have to do with being environmentally aware, asshole.

  • Eh just go with paper or you can get the reusable cloth shopping bags from your grocery store.

  • True. Not sure about other places, but in my city all grocery stores are selling those re-usable bags for one dollar each.

They're convenient, very durable, washable, and even can be recycled.

  • They should give us a possible solution, not the problem.

  • what the fu*ck am I supposed to put my produce in. metal cans, green peace bastards.

  • dumbass he said bring ur own bags 2 put it in..

mayb a bag made of cloth liek a book bag or recycled paper bag..

ppl like u kill the earth fag

  • I already dodnt use bags like these! yay me!

  • i got about 1 billion more things to worry about than bags......

  • What about your children? Or your grand-children? Think about it.

  • but it will afeect our children, our granchildren. i dont want them to suffer

  • smart...very smart

  • no offence but why does Ed Norton have to be the presenter the bastards loaded i coulda taken that place

  • Already doing my part. I use totes from various places for my shopping bags.

    - Heidi

  • that's so right, everybody should be involved into this affair

  • Yessssss... I ooobeeeyyy Edward Norton....

  • oh shit the hulk!

  • Wow, that's great. I live in the boston area and we have plastic here although it was on the list. Hmmm... must not have reached this area yet.
