This is NOT Bout murder! George is singing of how he grew up and this song is dedicated to his Little Sister whom he loved dearly! She died at an early age from polio or some such childhood illness! Janie was her name!
A true story song that just dont exist anymore, i can picture in my head the stuggle the story teller is sharing, but the essential point is love. The teller's wife passed away but love hasn't. Hence there's flowers growing on ground so poor that grass wont grow. this is defiately in my top 5 Jones songs.
rohjoe1969 I've been listening to your posts now for quite a while. Its time for me to tell you how much I appreciate them. Thanks a lot and keep up the good work. George Jones is my favorite. Although I'll probably just comment on this clip, the others are great as well. Thanks again.

wait a minit .....i've heard this for years now ...are we missing somethings ? is this about murder....no one knows .....then one year death was going round...another radio lover tune ??? true as one could be ??? we might have to ask the possum his self
This song reminds me of my dad. its so sad it makes me cry but I love George Jones so much, that I just cant stop listening to him. My dad died when I was 22 yrs. old and god how I miss him! Thanks for the song,I love it, works as therapy for me!
REAL COUNTRY MUSIC God bless the ole southern farmers wayback years ago i remember hearing stories of my kinfolks workin that hard red clay dirt god bless them all and i 'm glad o got a tractor lol.not a plow behind a mule
My great grandparents lived that way. They were considered "rich" because they had a source of sugar. They had honey bees, lol. People would trade big time to get it. My great grandfather was also the only horse doctor around. Kind of mechanic back in those days. Back then no horse pretty much meant no way of life.
App. 8-10 yrs. ago I stopped at a gas-station and outside in a wire-basket were cassette tapes for sale. I spotted a G. Jones which I bought. It was the Bradleybarn series. WOW !!!
This was a cut off that tape . All duets with the worlds greatest stars. Loved it . Played it to death . lol
@GavDuggan1983 Sure is ironic, considering the excellent sound engineering wasted on the likes of current "country" singers and the untalented shit being produced today.
@GavDuggan1983 well given that the originals were on record and tape, and even then not of great quality like todays cd's. but when you record something from tape onto your compute you loose part of its original quality.
I don't accept this. This was probably recorded in the 60s, there's no reason it should sound this poor! Hank Williams recordings from the late 40s sound great, Johnny Cash's sun recording in the 50s sound fine. I just cant get my head round why all of George Jones' old recordings are of such poor recording quality, seems a shame.
My Dad had this on an LP named The Very Best of George Jones . My Dad's favorite Singer Period and I'm Following in My Dads Footsteps . Plus i can happily say I have seen the Legend Twice .
New Country music thease days doesnt have much to say. For example, theeres alot of people losing there homes and jobs thease days and nobody is singing about it or maybe the radio just dont play it.
George Jones is simply the greatest American singer of all time. He takes a song and lets you live the story with him. No singer alive can match his ability to do that.
@barkerfmx thank bush jr. tell me, what did obama have to do with the economic downfall of your country hmm? he didnt start a 10 year war in the middle east, he didnt suck up the counties resources trying to pry sand monkey's out of caves.
its so fashionable to take a shot at obama, but listen up you hatefull little man, hes what your fucking country needs.
and before you flame for this, be warned, i have my free healthcare card right here. and i know hooow much you all seem to fear that -_-
@mechwarriornut i will and i will also enjoy george jones the reason im even on this video is to listen to him not to be harassed about my opinion fuck obama thats my opinion idc what you think or anyone else i voted for him once i will not do it again
My favorite Jones' song has always been "A Good Year for the Roses",but I may have to reconsider after discovering this classic.Pure gold. Does anybody have the version of this from the Bradley Barnes sessions cd w/ Emmylou? If so please post.
Before today, that was the only version I had ever heard. It's so good, but it's also with Tammy Wynette and Dolly Parton, I think. Maybe not Tammy, but definitely Dolly. And it's so beautiful.
I heard it somewhere and you are so right. It is a masterpiece...by the way his latest CD is available at all Cracker Barrel Restaurants. Today George is in Canada still singing the old songs. God Bless Him.
Song written by "Peanut" Montgomery, of Tuscaloosa, Ala. Listen to Jones' version of this song recorded years later on "Bradley Barn Sessions," accompanied by Dolly Parten, Emmylou Harris, and Trisha Yearwood. Still in print, whereas this 1969 version is hard to find.
This Song is My Favorite Country Song of all time. Its sad that country music isnt wasnt what it used to be, other then a few like George Strait,Alan Jackson,Clint Black,Martina McBride etc

Why are so many old george jones recordings such poor sound quality?

Not sure, but to me it gives it that classic country sound. IMO I like it that way.

And why this song isn't an absolute classic tells a lot about people's music taste.
Ze18613 2 years ago 6
People who put "he stopped loving her today" on the top of saddest songs ever can't surely have heard this one.
This is at the same time sad, moving and not exaggerated. I would say this song is relevant everywhere from Tennessee to China.
Brilliant

This song to me....is like the essence of nobility, listen to the words and think of those first settlers in the west both Canada and Usa
no welfare or police nanny state and they made a wilderness into the most productive and grand continent on earth.
A continent only in decline in the same ratio as the free rides.
blah blah blah.
I like the song
