My husband Mario, is helping me appreciate the genious strokes of Mr. Manne. He tells me he was fortunate enough to see him in action. I wonder, Is anyone out there besides my husband remember Shelly?
I had the pleasure of attending a concert by the Oliver Nelson Quintet, which included greats like Shelly Manne, Oliver Nelson (sax) and pianist Joe Sample (Jazz Crusaders). Marvelous. It was the first jazz concert I attended in the U.S., back in 1973 at Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri.
What's also Amazing is ;This is the Late 50's and it Still sounds Fresh and can Hold up to Anything Now or even Better. These were Articulate Players and The Music displayed Foremost .Thankyou...
@beadbopWhen I was a 13 yr. old I was so enthralled with your dads playing "especially you stepped out of a dream"that I got his phone number from the union and called him and told how great i thought he was.He was very appreciative when i called. later on I had his friend doctor gold recount my phone call to him his playing is one of the reasons I went on to play jazz piano. the albums with chet were gems, .And the album Double Play was a landmark album and it still gives me chills to hear it
@sndtubes1 Those are Russ Freeman's chords Russ Freeman's characteristic improvisation, and it's also Russ Freeman's face. So, if it looks like a Russ, and sounds like a Russ.... it isn't Victor Feldman. There was some overlap at that time with Richie Kamuca, Joe Gordon, Victor Feldman, and Monty Budwig (Shelly Manne at the Blackhawk (vol 1 - 5).
I was living in LA in 1969 when I was strictly a Rock & Roll drummer. A friend took me to Shelly's Manne hole where the house band was Shelly Manne & His Men. I walked away with a whole new perspective. I still played rock but my love of jazz continued through the years. Thank you, Shelly.
WOW, are these guys the granddaddies of "cool jazz"? Where did it all go so very wrong?! This is awesome, I'm checking out Shelly Manne cuz I like Russ Freeman's work with Chet Baker. Still, they look like they're all too cool to dare to look like they're having fun...can't really say I wish I had seen these guys live.
i'm a big, big fan of shelly manne, have a lot of his recordings, but seeing him with his 'men'. is awesome. the energy is so wonderful, and i agree, the director of photography for this presentation is great, they really don't take the care needed for such 'art' anymore.
Great quintet. I just did an interview with Paula Freeman, Russ's daughter, who has come to live in Holland and who told me about her father, whom she doted on.
I LOVE IT!!! OMG. The best Ive heard since the original orchestra. I LOVE THIS tune by billie holiday. Who is shelly manne? I dont know much about him??? Or them rather. I LOVE THIS.
Shelly Manne was one of the greatest drummers in all of Jazz. He led his own groups, had his own nightclub, played with all the Jazz greats, and was the first call studio drummer in Hollywood for decades.
He was one of the most original drummers ever, and was known for his musical style, his brush work, and his great sense of swing.
Played with the Stan Kenton Orchestra as well, and became quite famous for that.
He was an absolute Master Jazz Drummer of the highest order.
@MarkR1957 shelly also played on some of the incredible Howard Roberts albums in the late 1960s....I know for sure he was on Jaunty-Jolly, and he just smoked. Those have all been reissued as 2 album Cds and they are great, jazz arranged pop songs with the top L.A. players of the era. H.R. had some radio hits with those, walked away from it do Avant Garde, and pretty much sunk his solo recording career.
@MarkR1957 He was indeed a terrific drummer. A couple of years ago I heard a tune he recorded with his band (probably mid 1960's) that was paced by the typical ride pattern which he played at an absolutely blistering pace. I know he was doing it with just the right hand. You could give me five hands and I still couldn't play it that fast.
Mark-er it is so nice to run across someone who knows the back in the day Masters of the Jazz Drumset. I'll bet you can pull a looong list right off the top of your head. As you already know this is the adaptibility of these guys from a duo to a quintet to an octet to a full scale big band........these guys were awesome, weren't they! Alvin Stoller
Mark i don't propose to be as up on these great musicians as you........it's just that it's nice to see these masters get their recognition!
Listening to this great band again & noticed how much Russ Freeman looks like Howard Sprague. I'm probably really dating myself w/that reference.

To everyone: I am Russ Freeman's only child -- all grown up now -- and I can assure all of you that IS Russ Freeman on the piano here.
He and Shelly were best friends for many years, and they collaborated on projects all the way up to their last album together in 1982, "One on One."
Shelly died suddenly of a heart attack a couple of years after that, and my Dad passed away in 2002. He always sadly missed Shelly.
They were a couple of the coolest cats around, and I still love them both! :)
