@notefromself; funny you should mention that but in 1989 an american tabloid magazine rumored that he was dating and was engaged to porn star Robyn Byrd.
I remember when Barry performed at Harvard Stadium in the summer of 1978. I lived in Boston then and there were posters all over the place. I particularly remember one posted in Harvard Square in Cambridge. As I recall, in the photo he was wearing an outfit similar to the one in the video.
I didn't get to the concert, but this song evokes memories of a wonderful time and place.
And to those who don't live in New England, I offer my condolences.
SON-OF-GUN; JUST MADE IT!!! In 1977 "Weekend In New England" peaked at No. 10 thus just making the Billboard's Top 10 and it spent a total of 19 weeks in the Top 100...
In 1986 Reba McEntire released "Whoever's In New England"; some people think it was an answer to the Manilow record, but others say it's not...
So funny! I was just watching Friends, and got your reference. Manilow has always been one of my favs, and as soon as I saw that sequence, I had to look up the song- and relive it!
man grew up as young kid in the 80's between the ages 4-13 he was all over the radio good memories. his music makes me cry cause all the childhood memories when family and God was priority and life was simple
@vm24seven365 b4 his solo career he was bette middlers piano player and botfriend wonder if that has any thing to do with all those old lave songs lol
Such an awesome voice and a stellar performer! who is he thinking about aw he sings this song? Wishing I had someone who looked at me like that! I guess I'll just have to settle for Barry for now.
@TiminPhoenix; The bantering between you two is entertaining and hilarious! Do you have a column in Time magazine or the Washington Post? or is this some kind of clever two man game for opportunist exposure, manilow brings out the best in all of us.
@CurlyHair6678,i was thinking that too, but the truth is the guy needed to go to the can before the song but he held on till the end of it at 4;39 because after all it was "Weekend in NE". @gemini5865 Im a fellow twin and you probably know that so is Manilow.
I can watch this 100 times, and cry every time, and recall my first love, and how true the words were to us at that time, being a long distance love.... Thanks Barry for the memories that are forever in my heart.....
My husband passed away 9 years ago. When I hear this song I cry and think of him he was only 49. He was 6 years older than me,I cry every time I hear it.
@OneButterflyHeart . Sorry to hear that. My brother passed away 3 years ago, he was the one who told me that I would like this song..... and I did. Absolutely love it. I always remember that moment when I hear this it takes me back .... to better days. I hope the remainder of your life is filled with the memories you both seemed to share from the way you talk. tc
@gemini5865 So sorry to hear about your brother, seems that song means alot to everyone. Barry puts so much of him self into each and every song, makes us feel it too. I Hope the memories are sweet for you. Your so sweet to reply to my message. Yes my husband and I were married 25 years 8 days have so many memories I'm afraid I might forget thats what hurts. I Love Him So Much. Bless you and take care also.:)
So many fabulous songs from this awesome singer! But I NEVER get tired of this one...one of my all time favorites! Thank you Barry for the songs of our lives. Peace.
His use of key changes in this and other songs is a standard and effective forumula for adding to the drama and feeling of his music He might not have invented that technique, but he consistently put it to great use. (Btw "one more time?" that's funny!)
Reminds me of my childhood. I was in LOVE with him as a child and watching this reminds me why. Seems like he's singing to me( I wish). Would love to see the whole concert. Thanks for sharing!!!
Thanks for posting this live version of this song.. I loved it and it made me cry because of his singing his heart out in this song and u can see his emotion.. Remind of somebody i love whose far.. ty!
no barry minalow is not gay!he is a real man i hate how guys go around acting all tough and they never cry i cry and im a guy so call me a little girl or watever cause this guy touches my heart if he doesnt theres something wrong with u
I was 13 when this song came out, I had a crush on this guy, I thought he was the living end, we would dance to this song all the time, I met him the other day, and he hasn't changed a bit, sooo sweet... But the crush had ending, but this song makes me think of that crush... I just love it.....
We have an album of Barry Manilow my mom loves him soooo much! And I love lots of his song I am 35 and I was brought up with classic songs at home so I really appreciate the classics. Love them way more than the newer songs.
Hundreds of rhinestone music boxes crafted with the "Weekend in New England" melody were discovered in a residence in Waterbury,Conn.Sources say Peter Badem, 74 a retired fifth generation swiss clockmaker crafted them only to offer them as gifts to friends and loved ones and not for the intention to distribute for financial purposes. On the insistence of his now deceased wife, they attended a Manilow concert in the Waterbury area several years ago and was intensely moved by the song.
Janet Jackson admitted she had a childhood crush on Manilow in an Entertainment Tonight interview. She would kiss the television screen when he appeared.
Agree with so many of you -- it's seldom that a live performance can one-up the original studio recording. I think he pulls it off here, and more ....
One of the most beautiful love songs of all times. It more than stands the test of time. It's so exceptionally powerful - starts with strength and ends up just exploding.
he sang this song better than the original recorded one. my absolute favorite song of barry. hardly anyone one will know the title but somehow will remember the tune.
@notefromself The word idiot was a term used to describe the IQ of a person, as was moron and as was retarted. Before going on your self-righteous jihad over someone's language, police your own.
@notefromself I'll accept making a typo now and again. It sure beats someone who has to invent a "sister" so they can play some sort of self-righteous game. Your type is sadly so common these days. I have no doubt that your claim to having a sister with "Downs" is a total lie. How much a loser must you be to invent someone so as to be on some dubious moral high ground?
Many vocalists get swept up in the tide of the crescendo of the choral blitz of orchestration in live performances, but this artist has vocal qualities similar to overdrive in an automobile, booming, nasal tone clarity when needed and as a result strong head-tone for maximum ballad effect.Critics frequently jab at manilow for his "schmaltzy", commercial sound, but he conveys the message loud and clear, especially to foreign audiences and of course the"male to female", major factors in his success
One of the most beautiful songs Barry had ever written and sang!!!All his songs had meaning to all our lives at one point or another.....I have a DVD and CD that both have the same songs in the same order on on them named "The ultimate Manilow",and they are both fabulous :-)Thanks for the memories :-)
This is my second favorite love song of Barry's! First is Somewhere in the Night! I remember when it hit the charts...I had to have it...I mean the album...this song is timeless and you can feel him in this labor of love that came so easy for him to create!!! Look how he gives it his all no wonder why he had to get botox!!! The poor man put all his feelings out there for us fans....
The passion Barry puts into this song is breath-taking. There will always be jealous people who feel they build themselves up by putting someone great down, but this man's body of work speaks for itself. Go Barry! There will never be anyone like you again. It's true; with you there's a Heaven, so Earth ain't so bad. Keep singing.
Whoever says this guy can't sing--and I have heard people say that, even critics who presumably know such things--give me from 3:40 to the end of this video, and I simply have to look down in order to see heaven. Awesome!
I can watch this 100 times, and cry every time, and recall my first love, and how true the words were to us at that time, being a long distance love.... Thanks Barry for the memories that are forever in my heart.....
BUT SADLY ...TIME IS SHORT ... OLD MAN TIME HAS BURNED OFF THE EDGES HERE ..... .... I AM SOBER NOW...BUT YOU DROVE ME TO THE BOTTLE IN THE FIRST PLACE ..... PERIOD
I love hearing him talk about how hard it was to sell this song to the record company because it's a pop song...but technically a waltz in 3/4 time. How many waltzes do you hear on the radio? At the same time, the title NEVER actually appears in the song itself. Even so...he believed in it and it became a hit. It's in my Top 5 Barry songs.
This is exactly how it feels to miss and long for the one that you love ... beautiful written and sung with a sense of urgency, desparation, love and hope that is all there when it comes to love. Gorgeous. Perfect performance ... perfectly emoted! Now thats blue eyed soul :-)
After seeing this clip, I ordered the DVD of Barry's 1978 concert at the Greek Theater from the Barry Manilow website--I just watched it and it is fabulous. If you don't have it, do yourself a favor and order the 30th anniversary edition DVD, you will not be sorry!
This song stuck in my mind since I was a teenager. I was 18 in 1978. I always rememered the name of the song. Weekend in New England" How romantic is that?
I'm a black woman who has never been to New England, but that's o.k. I still know about love.
@elena2426 I bought the greatest hits album IN 1978 almost on the strength of this. I must have listened to it non stop for days. Such a beautfil song, I love all of Manilow's work but this is the best by a long, long, long way.

This version is amazing. I wish more people knew just how wonderful of a singer this guy is... I'm thankful I listened to this version of the song. It is even better than the original soundtrack. If this song doesn't move you, than you have never loved before.
Wow--hot night, hot Barry, and hot song--his passion is pretty incredible--I've been a Barry fan for 35 years but am new to the YouTube thing--this is great.

I grew up listening to barry, thou I may have just been 10yrs old when this concert occured' ... I had an older Cousin and her g/f that would listen to Barry' and I wanted to be just like them... I finally got see Barry in Concert here in Houston, Tx...and I was pregnant.... was beautiful'.....
I loved this when it was on HBO when I was 7 and I love it now.. Nearing 40 Barry makes growing older not so bad... I have the show on DVD and it is still amazing....
I love his music ... but I don't care for his voice =( . I like the way John Barrowman sings his songs ... but Barry is a brilliant song writer! I love to hear his songs though. I feel like I owe it to him to hear HIM sing his OWN song ... so bravo Barry.
I love to watch him sing, his facial expressions are so real and raw. I listen to a song of his and can see him singing it! So powerful. Loved him since I was 8 years old. I'm 38 now. I remember the first concert I saw him in was on TV in a pink suit!
Barry is an absolute legend! I have loved him and his music for over 30 yrs - some of them i'm ashamed to admit were in secret. Thankyou for the music Barry xx

Thanks Barry for the memories that are forever in my heart.....

he really is cute back then and a great performer too... no dull moments for audience though his songs are sucker for emotions

I love hearing him talk about how hard it was to sell this song to the record company because it's a pop song...but technically a waltz in 3/4 time. How many waltzes do you hear on the radio? At the same time, the title NEVER actually appears in the song itself. Even so...he believed in it and it became a hit. It's in my Top 5 Barry songs.

lotsabears 1 year ago
After seeing this clip, I ordered the DVD of Barry's 1978 concert at the Greek Theater from the Barry Manilow website--I just watched it and it is fabulous. If you don't have it, do yourself a favor and order the 30th anniversary edition DVD, you will not be sorry!

This song stuck in my mind since I was a teenager. I was 18 in 1978. I always rememered the name of the song. Weekend in New England" How romantic is that?
I'm a black woman who has never been to New England, but that's o.k. I still know about love.

This version is amazing. I wish more people knew just how wonderful of a singer this guy is... I'm thankful I listened to this version of the song. It is even better than the original soundtrack. If this song doesn't move you, than you have never loved before.

I love his music ... but I don't care for his voice =( . I like the way John Barrowman sings his songs ... but Barry is a brilliant song writer! I love to hear his songs though. I feel like I owe it to him to hear HIM sing his OWN song ... so bravo Barry.
Iloveorliandwicked 1 year ago
@Iloveorliandwicked he doesn't write his own songs for the most part. he didn't even write "i write the songs" lol

I love to watch him sing, his facial expressions are so real and raw. I listen to a song of his and can see him singing it! So powerful. Loved him since I was 8 years old. I'm 38 now. I remember the first concert I saw him in was on TV in a pink suit!
