This song is GREAT! What were the producers thinking? If they were, that is? I remember being in a cinema watching TND opening credits and thinking 'what is this?" It was sad to hear Sheryl Crow struggle to reach the high notes. Then came the closing credits and OH DEAR GOD! This is the song, I know it, you know it, everybody but the producers knew it! Why why why wasn't it picked?
Interesting that the instrumentals from this song are used throughout the film, but nothing from the Sheryl Crow music is heard anywhere else in the film. I think this was going to be the theme until the last minute when it was changed to the other version. I like both songs BTW.
For you who doesn´t know - or for you who doesn´t watch the END CREDITS of films (as leofilm for example); This track IS in the film, during the end credits.
And it IS the best James Bond Theme ever written...
I just heard the Sheryl Crow version. Crow beat out Lang? Oh, come ON are you serious? KD didn't just sing this song. She MADE it a Bond movie song. What fool picked Crow over this?? I'm gonna kick his ass.
k.d. could tease and tantalize me into anything with that voice!!
This song would have been the perfect mood setter for the movie. k.d. sang, "trust me--I'll deliver"-----and she did. Someone was just too stupid to accept delivery.
Good old fashioned homophobia stopped this from being the main title song. That's why it was put on at the end and we got lumbered with the fucking godawful Sheryl Crow song at the start. This is 20 billion times better and the best Bond theme that never was.
I recall how this was on the soundtrack, and for years I kept thinking it would have been a million times better for the opening. Good to see I wasn't alone...but I mean who keeps rejecting the good songs anyway?
Don't get me wrong, the version they used is good, but this just fits better and syncs with the opening far better then Crow's version.
When I first saw "Tomorrow Never Dies" in 1997, I was glad I had the foresight to sit through the end credits of the film, and completely GOBSMACKED that THIS song wasn't used as the OPENING theme! Sheryl Crow is talented, no question, but "Surrender", with its lyrics, big band style accompaniment and most of all, SOUL, thanks to k.d. Lang's vocals COMPLETELY ECLIPSES Crow's song, IMHO. That last note held during the last word, "dies" is HAUNTING...
deffo the crow version is better, this is too similar to other bond themes. although there is no doubt that kd lang has the better voice. the crow song is one of the best bond theme songs ever imo. as well as the world is not enough and goldeneye!
Absolutely awesome!!!! Love K D Lang and those trumpets Wow! This is definitely one of my favourite K D Lang songs. I haven't been a fan long but every song I have heard so far is fantastic The power of her voice certainly stands out on this one.
I have to Agree this was the far superior track for Tomorrow Never Dies, I couldn't believe it when the end credits came up and this track blasted out, what where they thinking about when they compiled the audio track for the movie. Cheryl Crows song is nothing compared to KD Langs track. Perhaps they should consider using it as a title track in the future it would be a crime not too.
I am a hugh KD Lang fan and she gave me chills when I saw her live. But I do like Sheryl Crow's version . . . not that it is better but it's different . . . it is more sensual and sexy, and I think it better fits the bond film genre, where as KD's version is pure and powerful, and great as well! I like both but prefer Crow's for it's erotic tone and her subtle nuances that evoke emotion.
I wish Eon would bring in more Canadians to sing Bond themes. Like I'd love to see Diana Krall, Céline Dion, Sarah Mclachlan, or Sophie Milman or even Michael Bublé do one!
First time I've heard this and WOW! doesn't it fit so well with Shriley Bassey and Nancy Sinatra's vocals for a Bond film. They should have used it. K.D. has a range and depth to her voice that is hard to match.
Yes, no one could or should sing this song other than Ms.Lang. In my sixty years on this earth there's only five women I would consider as the best female singers of all time and they are Grace Slick, Mama Cass, Janis Joplin, Patsy Cline, and K.D.Lang. Not to sound brazen but find me five others that could sing better than the above five.
The producers were INSANE for ditching this at the last minute in favor of that crappy Sheryl Crow song. This is a perfect blending of the traditional Bond-sounding song with a modern style, whereas the Crow one is just a bland generic pop tune. It's a shame Brosnan never got any good title songs other than "Goldeneye." This would have been great!
Historically, the best themes are done by strong-voiced divas, sheryl crow's voice... well, like her namesake.. it crow"ed, tsk-tsk. Ms. Lang should be inducted into the pantheon of the Shirley Bassey and Tina Turner's themes.
Judging from whats been posted I might get cut up for this but, I think both songs have great integrity in their lyrics and sound, this video does show the potential that the song had for this sequence but even if this song was or is better overall Id still have to agree with their original placements. Its the feel the songs give you, Crows feels more like an intro song where Surrender feels more like the big sounding big ending song to ride the movie out on.
yes...how it should have been! I like Sheryl's song too but this one is so much better. And it actually matches up with the visuals pretty good (like at 1:24)
They wanted a more bankable name, no doubt. I heard Sheryl Crow's version of this song and hated it. That's not saying Ms. Crow is untalented. I just think when someone is chosen to sing the theme to a long-running series like James Bond franchise, you need a big voice.
I'm so glad I found this. Ta for the link from "crying"..
This woman can do no wrong in my eyes, she never puts a foot wrong in performance. I'm also glad you can download this on i-Tunes..though it's under the title "Surrender."
This song is the BOMB!!! On equal par, with that other great dame Bassey singing Diamonds are Forever. K D Lang's voice is so awesome! It should have been in the opening credits, not just the end. By the way have a listen to K D singing Hallelujah, the most sublime and spine tingling version ever!
I think both soundtracks work perfectly - Crow's and Lang's. They have a big band sound - perhaps this one more so - but both fit well with the secret agent, suave male theme of James Bond. If only one was saved for another bond film with a weak soundtrack - I dunno - Die another day/quantum of solace perhaps!
K.D. to me is the 4th best singer who ever lived right behind Grace Slick, Janis Joplin, and Mama Cass. Give me these four exquisite singers anytime and I'll die a happy man
I will admit that I enjoy Sheryl Crow's theme for the film, but this one is just so much better that it's on another level. What a great classic style Bond theme.
k.d.Lang's theme song "Surrender" was definitely one of the best Bond soundtracks ever - so beautiful, emotional and deep - much better than Sheryl Crow's title song
The incredibly talented David Arnold shines yet again, with an awesome piece reminiscient of Monty Norman and John Barry's earlier efforts, and an overall brassy sound gives the piece much more of an interesting tone, IMO.
Let me add mine to the chorus of voices here that bemoan that this platonic ideal of a Bond theme was relegated to the closing credits while the fame-addicted stick figure got the opening number. The invasion of Grenada was a fairer contest than this!
are you kidding me?? no contest. this version should've been used on the opening.
k.d. lang's song is better written, arranged, performed, waaaaay more dynamic and just more... well... BONDIAN. i mean, c'mon!!! THAT VOCAL grabs you by the throat and doesn't let you go. i get chills.
i'd love to know the reasons for this bizarre decision. this is one where contract law trumped good sense.
but it looks like k.d. lang's getting her ultimate revenge on youtube.
The reason, I suspect, for not choosing kd lang's version would have been the extra notoriety that she would have gotten and the producers did not want a militant,
anti-meat activist, lesbian promoting their
film. It wouldn't have been good for ticket sales, especially if they believed that kd would use the opportunity to espouse her own political, life-style issues moreso
@leofilm I agree! When I first saw the film I was not impressed by the opening theme, when I heard this.. Wow!! This is a true Bond song and k.d. delivers the goods. Everyone I know says this should have opened the film.
Its not only a more Bondian sound, not only more Bassey-esque voice, and more exciting in every way, its also got lyrics which are so cleverly about the theme of the film: ie news manipulation. Brilliant
God this is a SUPERB, ABSOLUTELY SUPERB Bond song - it is the BEST of any since brosnan/craig took over - by a LONG LONG LONG LONG way - PLEASE can someone create a tune like this for the next one...
Definatly better by 1000% than crow's song. Also way more importantly is that David Arnold incorporates this into the score of the film as John Barry always did giving a unity to the music, he also does it in The Worl Is Not Enough and Casino Royal, which he also wrote theme songs for as well as scored.
hey that's the film version - but it is not good as heard while seeing those titles - remember those titles was created with Crow's song in mind - but still arnold's song is better
this has always been one of my favorite bond themes, its such a shame they stuck it on the end credits instead of using it as was intended with the opening.
This was originally supposed to be the main title theme! Spineless whimping out at the last minute because they thought Sheryl Crow would be "more popular" even though couldn't even hit the high notes in her own song, ugh. And lang's song is one of the best songs in the series, I think. Pity.
Agreed i prefer that one too ,i really do not like the new bond all action nothing else please remake OHMSS !!!! and ask Goldfrapp to make the song success guarenteed.
This should have been the theme song. This is in the fantastic tradition of Shirley Bassey. I wish they would bring this musical approach back to the films. It's style and it's CLASS! That's what 007 is!
I always did love this song, but listening to it again, I don't really like Lang's vocals. She does have a great, "Bassey-esque" voice, but they just don't seem to fit with this song. Love the instrumentals, though. And while I also love Danny Kleinman's Bond work, these titles looks to be his worst. A pity he's not coming back for Quantum of Solace!
I agree with you regarding kd lang's vocals. But she stops shot of achieving the great Bassey-esque brassy voice.
I LOVE kd lang but this particular song should have been sung by Bassey with her full throated vocal grasping and singing the hell out of every word.
lang's smooth and very accomplished voice is more suited to ballads and songs of heartbreak where she can honestly make you weep just listen to her rendition of Cole Porter's So In Love.
I recently listend to Another Way To Die for Quantum of Solace and I SOO wish we had this type of song for the movie. This song WAS originally the title song for TND, but the producers had to move it due to some contract with Crow. This song is even heard throught the TND score. Far more superior than Crows. This song IS Tomorrow Never Dies!!!!!!
Totally agree with you about this song - it should have been used in the opening credits.
I have to disagree with JLC48 about Rupert Everett, Bond has to be an action hero first and foremost - Everett has all the action qualities of a limp wrist.
TPTB really blew it by choosing Crow over Lang. No doubt about it. But then I think they've blown it many times...not wooing sexy long legged Lucy Lawless into the franchise is another and not going with sexy debonair Rupert Everett as 007 another. One blunder after another. Anyway...this is simply awesome and thanks so much for the post. 5 stars and a favorite from me!!
ah! The opening as it was intended. They shudda stuck with k.d. when will these people learn! Wish I had copy of this song. It's on of my favs. Thanks for posting this!!
Alicia Keys & Jack Black will perform the theme song ("Another Way To Die") for the newest Bond film ("Quantum Of Solace"). I understand the Broccoli's desire to "stay current", but, I totally disagree with that choice. Considering Dame Shirley's hugely successful last album, it would make sense, I feel, to bring back the bombastic 007 themes, b/c, let's be honest, how many of the last few Bond films had great opening songs? "Goldeneye" & this one were the last, IMO.
Excellent. I still don't truly understand why they replaced this song with the Crow song. It is far more "Bondian" in construction. The score throughout the film is based on the Lang song not the Crow song.
This is one of the greatest Bond songs to never be a Bond opening theme. KD Lang is in a word, phenomenal. Sure it is the ending theme, but this is perhaps the most underrated song to ever be in the franchise.
This should have been the opening song for this movie! People would still try to sing this one, while Sheryl's & Madonna's have, largely, been forgotten.
they did use this -- it was the end credits. Crow was chosen for the opening, and Lang was chosen to perform this for the end credits. This song is "Surrender," not "Tomorrow Never Dies." The decision was nothing controversial.
Surrender was the original title song. The Crow song was added later since it was thought to be more "mainstream". If you listen to the soundtrack scores of the entire film, the recurring tune is that of "Surrender" not of the main title as it should be.
I read a year ago on some internet site that that one of the producers said that the song by KD was supose to be in the opening credits, but at the last minute, they switched it.
Agreed. KD has the lower deeper voice that you need for a bond theme.
As for the people pushing You Know my Name.... gosh.. I SOOOO wanted to REALLY hate that song for being a rock song (BONDSONGS ARE TORCHSONGS!), but it was dark enough to work well (compared to Aha's, Wing's, Duran Duran's and ug... Lulu's capital spy-pop crimes). But Tina and Shirley "Jr" from Garbage still own the more recent Bond song queen titles. But I'm sure Chris Cornell will gladly let them keep their tiaras!
This song features over the end titles of TND and the melody reprises through out the movie, very much in the same way as You Know My Name did in CR. Which was the problem with Crow's song, it doesn't feature at all within the film itself other than the main title.
this version blows crowes version out of the water. i had no idea this song ever existed, crowe's version sounds like some teenager singing to herself in the bathroom mirror, but it still can't beat "you know my name".
In my opinion Tomorrow Never Dies, has the weakest plot, I mean a media tycoon trying to start World War III just so he can have exclusive media rights to it? that's just dumb.
Love this song - stays true to the Bond movie music legacy of Shirley Bassey, Tina Turner and a few others. Too bad the staylized nature of Bond music has caved into following "current" trends. Has k.d. ever sung this live?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
This song is soo tired!! It may have worked if Tomarrow Never Dies was made in 1965. kd lang's voice so old and scratchy would have been perfect for yester-year. It's alright where it is,, at the end of the movie.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Sheryl Crow's Tomorrow Never Dies is an exceptional song - it should have been Oscar nominated. This song is not in the same league. It's just a series of rather dull Bond song cliches. It's all surface, no feeling, all artifice, no art. Crow's song ties wonderfully into Paris' storyline and the James Bond mystique. The intention with Surrender was EC's plot but it's all far too bland, too lazy , too unfocused to in any way capture that. They rejected this because it wasn't good enough. End of
you said it all foreo, Crow is nothing but a hanger on groupie in my book with limited talent but her looks got her this gig. K.D.'s version is soo much better and one of the best of all time. KD and Shirley Bassey will always be remembered as the all time Bond singers in my opinion.
Scruffy193 2 years ago 8
Let me add mine to the chorus of voices here that bemoan that this platonic ideal of a Bond theme was relegated to the closing credits while the fame-addicted stick figure got the opening number. The invasion of Grenada was a fairer contest than this!
stkaris 2 years ago 8
What they should have done was use this song for the opening and Swan Lee's version of Tomorrow Never Dies for the end credits.
truemaster808 2 years ago 2
are you kidding me?? no contest. this version should've been used on the opening.
k.d. lang's song is better written, arranged, performed, waaaaay more dynamic and just more... well... BONDIAN. i mean, c'mon!!! THAT VOCAL grabs you by the throat and doesn't let you go. i get chills.
i'd love to know the reasons for this bizarre decision. this is one where contract law trumped good sense.
but it looks like k.d. lang's getting her ultimate revenge on youtube.
leofilm 2 years ago 39
The reason, I suspect, for not choosing kd lang's version would have been the extra notoriety that she would have gotten and the producers did not want a militant,
anti-meat activist, lesbian promoting their
film. It wouldn't have been good for ticket sales, especially if they believed that kd would use the opportunity to espouse her own political, life-style issues moreso
than the movie. kd lang - great voice, big
mouth, too bad. What a shame.
hasablad69 2 years ago 3
@leofilm I agree! When I first saw the film I was not impressed by the opening theme, when I heard this.. Wow!! This is a true Bond song and k.d. delivers the goods. Everyone I know says this should have opened the film.
mansfield67 1 year ago
Its not only a more Bondian sound, not only more Bassey-esque voice, and more exciting in every way, its also got lyrics which are so cleverly about the theme of the film: ie news manipulation. Brilliant

God this is a SUPERB, ABSOLUTELY SUPERB Bond song - it is the BEST of any since brosnan/craig took over - by a LONG LONG LONG LONG way - PLEASE can someone create a tune like this for the next one...
jippyjester 3 years ago 4
Definatly better by 1000% than crow's song. Also way more importantly is that David Arnold incorporates this into the score of the film as John Barry always did giving a unity to the music, he also does it in The Worl Is Not Enough and Casino Royal, which he also wrote theme songs for as well as scored.
AlexisLemonis 3 years ago 5
Wow this version is fantastic !!What happend?
huvander 3 years ago
This crystalizes the fact that this song (and not Crow's) fits the '60s-throwback-bond-music style of the whole film's soundtrack.
Probably a bad move borne purely of Sheryl vs KD politics.
vincentxp40 3 years ago 2
hey that's the film version - but it is not good as heard while seeing those titles - remember those titles was created with Crow's song in mind - but still arnold's song is better

thanks for doing this very cool
PACIFICA2009 3 years ago 3
This was originally supposed to be the main title theme! Spineless whimping out at the last minute because they thought Sheryl Crow would be "more popular" even though couldn't even hit the high notes in her own song, ugh. And lang's song is one of the best songs in the series, I think. Pity.
pbuchholz 3 years ago 2
Pretty good. Even though Sheryl Crow's Theme song was nominated for a Grammy.

This should have been the theme song. This is in the fantastic tradition of Shirley Bassey. I wish they would bring this musical approach back to the films. It's style and it's CLASS! That's what 007 is!

This is a classic Bond theme and it's tragic that it wasn't the main title. Thanks to LuiECuomo for correcting the producers' mistake.
angrypyjamas 3 years ago 2
I always did love this song, but listening to it again, I don't really like Lang's vocals. She does have a great, "Bassey-esque" voice, but they just don't seem to fit with this song. Love the instrumentals, though. And while I also love Danny Kleinman's Bond work, these titles looks to be his worst. A pity he's not coming back for Quantum of Solace!
sheavsey 3 years ago
I agree with you regarding kd lang's vocals. But she stops shot of achieving the great Bassey-esque brassy voice.
I LOVE kd lang but this particular song should have been sung by Bassey with her full throated vocal grasping and singing the hell out of every word.
lang's smooth and very accomplished voice is more suited to ballads and songs of heartbreak where she can honestly make you weep just listen to her rendition of Cole Porter's So In Love.

It's not hard to understand how and why this derivative poppycock got canned in favour of Crow's far superior song. What a terrible, terrible song.
Scaremite 3 years ago
I recently listend to Another Way To Die for Quantum of Solace and I SOO wish we had this type of song for the movie. This song WAS originally the title song for TND, but the producers had to move it due to some contract with Crow. This song is even heard throught the TND score. Far more superior than Crows. This song IS Tomorrow Never Dies!!!!!!

I agree with ya! This is far better than Crow's. Plus, Crow would not be able to do the vocals to her own song live.
medicalboy07 3 years ago
Totally agree with you about this song - it should have been used in the opening credits.
I have to disagree with JLC48 about Rupert Everett, Bond has to be an action hero first and foremost - Everett has all the action qualities of a limp wrist.
Dawgsnan 3 years ago
This so should've been the cover song. Tomorrow Never Dies was a piece-of-s*** song.
batlovescatDC 3 years ago
TPTB really blew it by choosing Crow over Lang. No doubt about it. But then I think they've blown it many times...not wooing sexy long legged Lucy Lawless into the franchise is another and not going with sexy debonair Rupert Everett as 007 another. One blunder after another. Anyway...this is simply awesome and thanks so much for the post. 5 stars and a favorite from me!!

StephanAOTTO1 3 years ago
:-D
I have to wipe off the laughing tears *gg*
If it had been Jack BLACK with Alicia Keys....omg, Tenacious D for Bond opening credits ("Another way to f*** her gently") ?!
It is Jack WHITE, well just a mistake with the colour, but....thx for giving me a moment of laughing out loud *gg*
Scorantesa 3 years ago

this is my favourite bond song that never was... KD Lang just has one of 'those' voices.. Stunnin!
colby82 3 years ago 4
Excellent. I still don't truly understand why they replaced this song with the Crow song. It is far more "Bondian" in construction. The score throughout the film is based on the Lang song not the Crow song.
relpax40 3 years ago 9
hey wait i never heard it in the james bond tommorow never died movie .... ?
inflateable 3 years ago
This is one of the greatest Bond songs to never be a Bond opening theme. KD Lang is in a word, phenomenal. Sure it is the ending theme, but this is perhaps the most underrated song to ever be in the franchise.
raven41179 3 years ago 8
You are so correct-what a crime! Miss Crow was much more mainstream than kd. Good for Crow, bad for BOND.
jmstudio 3 years ago
I must disagree, C.:)
The nest Bond theme should be Dame Bassey's new remix of "Big Spender". I can send it to you if you haven't heard it yet. That track's off the hook!
Besides, she's gotta do, at least, one more before she retires...in the next 30 years or so.:)
StephanAOTTO1 3 years ago
This should have been the opening song for this movie! People would still try to sing this one, while Sheryl's & Madonna's have, largely, been forgotten.
StephanAOTTO1 3 years ago
They should have used this instead of Sheryl Crow's one
hirudold 3 years ago 10
they did use this -- it was the end credits. Crow was chosen for the opening, and Lang was chosen to perform this for the end credits. This song is "Surrender," not "Tomorrow Never Dies." The decision was nothing controversial.
spyderboyy 3 years ago 2
Surrender was the original title song. The Crow song was added later since it was thought to be more "mainstream". If you listen to the soundtrack scores of the entire film, the recurring tune is that of "Surrender" not of the main title as it should be.
relpax40 3 years ago 4
This is bloody phenominal, why the hell didn't they use this?!
AlucardsFate 3 years ago 4
I read a year ago on some internet site that that one of the producers said that the song by KD was supose to be in the opening credits, but at the last minute, they switched it.
phil61571 3 years ago 2
This song is much better than the one that was used, sheryl crow is ok, but kd lang is an amazing singer
flymogram 3 years ago 7
But I'm sure Chris Cornell will gladly let them keep their tiaras!
knarvil 3 years ago 4
This song features over the end titles of TND and the melody reprises through out the movie, very much in the same way as You Know My Name did in CR. Which was the problem with Crow's song, it doesn't feature at all within the film itself other than the main title.
tastyspunker 3 years ago 3
this version blows crowes version out of the water. i had no idea this song ever existed, crowe's version sounds like some teenager singing to herself in the bathroom mirror, but it still can't beat "you know my name".

In my opinion Tomorrow Never Dies, has the weakest plot, I mean a media tycoon trying to start World War III just so he can have exclusive media rights to it? that's just dumb.

This song is soo tired!! It may have worked if Tomarrow Never Dies was made in 1965. kd lang's voice so old and scratchy would have been perfect for yester-year. It's alright where it is,, at the end of the movie.

End of
