  • When part 1 and part 2 of this are clipped together, then my life will be complete.

  • Musical Genius!

  • That song is so enormous that I get shivers. I'm not sure if he's on something or just on the song if I could say so. It gets ME somewhere for sure... then maybe he feels it many times more when performing it.

  • @opredelenooo He's on the power of the song and a little touch of alcohol and cigarettes.

  • they put the burma shave signs back up

  • The trumpeter seems to be Miles Davis, isn't he?

  • Fucking Brilliant !!!!!!

Does anyone know the name of the trumpeter?

  • Argh so sexy

  • waits is drunk as fuck.... brilliant

  • @brahmthexton He's definately on something, but he knows his performance so he can get a way with it.

  • When a nickel's worth of dreams have been swindled from you, I guess you can say, I'm on my way to Burma Shave.

  • fuck that saxophone intro rips me apart everytime i hear it.

    earshattering+beautiful= tom waits.

  • @theartofnotbeingseen um......its a trumpet. Not a saxophone

  • @nebulae87 um... i made a mistake. get over it.

  • some nights my heart pounds like thunder...dont know why it dont explode

  • My hate

    Tom Wait

    Be Bop

    Hate won't stop

    Till Burma Shave

  • Thanks for uploading this impressive video. I love Tom Waits. The thing is my english is not perfect. Would someone be so friendly and write everything down what he sais from part 1 and 2 ? That would be amazing. I hope there is someone out there who would do it. My email is : s-t-e-a-m @ web . de

    Greetings :)

  • and it must be hellacious performing the same numbers over and over again in other states, but he makes it look like CAKE. He even changes it up a bit from place to place. <3

  • I have this on dvd from his concert in Austin! I would like to know how to rip from dvds. What software would I use?! Thanks in advance if you have any information on this. Also, I've watched this performance 4 times in a row now. I just kinda' walk around and let it play and do my housework. Lovely ambience. Sometimes I stop to dance, sometimes to just watch.

    Tom Waits is magical.

  • @darkness19040 haha his nickname actually happens to be, tommy the cat lol. Not sure as to why though

  • amazing tune - well known off course - but the performance here is outstanding - thanx buddy!

  • There have been several versions of this performance here, from different stops on the same tour I would guess. (They differ slightly in the story told and how it is told.) The one I liked the most was from Paris. It was breathtaking, but has since disappeared from YT. This is the one most similar to that one, and I'm very happy to have found it, but I would still pay good money to own the one from Paris.

  • pure genious, man's a natural storyteller

  • I saw Tom Waits in Houston last year, touring with his son Casey...It was absolutely amazing, Tom waits is a WONDERFUL entertainer.

  • Comment removed

  • fucking genius. simply pure fucking genius.

  • nice comment minus all of the fucking parts! :)

  • nice comment minus all the parts where you didn't say fucking.

  • WHERE can i find this video, i MUST have this

  • burma shave ?

  • a cd of this show was released this year. it is fantastic. Was Tom known to be drunk during performances?

  • uh. yep.

  • theres a great bootleg dvd of this whole concert floating around. i got one on amazon

  • please send some more info about that dvd!

  • come on you guys.. if anyone knows anything about this concert, where can you get it or any kind of other information..please, contact me..

this song is driving me crazy..

  • i found it on amazon, but ti isn't there anymore. probably just a random bootleg. don't know where else you'd get it

  • There is a dvd called Burma Shave, you can buy that one.

  • Yeah, I agree. It's probably my favorite song of Waits. Although it's not the same recording, this song is on a bootleg called "Fast Women and Slow Horses (Live in Australia 1979)." It's actually a more magical version of this song, in my opinion.

  • This is orinially from a US program called "Austin City Limits" normally found on PBS. I have this on concert on video.

  • Blimey - this is fantastic! Only just come across Burma Shave ...

  • I love you Tom Waits!

  • tom waits is so good.........from hannes holland

  • dont you just got to fucking love youtube. isnt it one of the best things that ever happened? im just like, puff wow! THANK YOU for posting this

  • absolutely - i was looking for chocolate jesus on letterman video all over the net until i finally discovered youtube about 2 years ago and found the video, have been surfing youtube ever since. great comment on your behalf.

  • StrongF is a Arash/Feras....

  • OldeBullLee, only those with nothing intelligent left to say use "etc."

  • So hottttt...

  • hell yeah.

  • godamn this big ole world

  • Pity that the video is in two separate parts.

  • This is from Austin City Limits. Does anyone happen to see any other of the clips from this particular show, or know of a place to obtain it? This was the peak of his career in a lot of ways for me.

  • dude, stop posting shit and die, mofo pr0n addict fatty...

  • Oh, not you again.

  •

  • self righteous hypocrites like you are funny. YOU ARE ON THE INTERNET! YOU ARE LOOKING UP TOM WAITS!

And yet you complain when you find what you look for. I would gladly purchase a DVD of all this if it was available, just so I didn't have to read your ignorance.

  • yes... god forbid tom waits get any exposure... i mean, how dare he get any new fans?!?!?

in all seriousness... I (and many others, I assume) would LOVE to see tom waits in concert... I would gladly pay too, except for the fact that he... doesn't tour very much at all anymore... so this is about the closest that many people such as myself will get to seeing him in concert... so let us enjoy ourselves and fucking get over yourself already. thanks.

  • Waits is in no danger of becoming a household name. The day every radio is playing Old 55 and I can't go out without hearing someone singing "Better off without a wife"... no, wait. THAT WOULD BE AWESOME! Would you rather have hoi polli thinking that Soulja Boy is the greatest?

Online, criticizing people who's only crime is LIKING THE SAME MUSIC YOU DO. If I lived where people didn't think Waits was weird, or even knew who Burroughs was, I would be grateful.

  • tom waits and dvd

    owned xD

  • Oh, just don't scroll down and it'll be fine. There already is a DVD of Burma Shave, at least, which you can find on Amazon, but I don't think it has much else.

  • That is fantastic for you, but not everyone is in a cultured area where they can find these things, or other fans of good music for that matter.

As for me being no Burroughs, I have bean reading beat literature (Kerouac, Ginsberg, Burroughs, Vonnegut, etc) for the past 10 years. I have traveled this country east to west with nothing but the shirt on my back (til I got an indecent exposure charge in Kansas and was issued pants) I think I know a little about LIVING and not just the internet.

  • you are an idiot.

  • stop trying to force your beliefs onto other people!

  • if you like this, try getting a hold of the cold beer on a hot night bootleg where he does it live in sydney 1979. it beats this version by a hair, but there weren't any video recordings of it.

  • what´s burma shave?

  • it is not a place per se, it is an advert that TW remembered seeing when he was a child, travelling with his dad when they were on the road. burma shave is a destination when the starting point is a town that you come from that you hate.

  • Nice =)

    Thanks!

  • And BurmaShave signs were ubiquitous in the Midwest in the US, too. They had rhyming phrases on them that ended with that punchline.

  • burma shave is a shaving cream from the 40s and 50s. they would have gimmicky billboards all across the US. tom is playing on that: it doesn't really exist.

  • No jazz

    No pizzaz

    'Straight' approach

    Ditch the roach

    No booze, no jive

So Burma Shave can stay alive

  • one of the best Waits performances

the best version of " Burma Shave " ever ..

    great .. just great one

  • Yes.

  • I really love this version of Burma Shave. Especially the beginnong is great...

  • This is the best rendition of Burma Shave that I've heard anywhere. Thanks for posting...do you have the whole show?

  • This is actually "Burma Shave" with a Summertime intro, and bits of Summertime mixed in. He used to incorporate other songs into his songs in live performances now and then. This is one of the best Waits performances ever, methinks - Summertime fits in great with Burma Shave.
