today, tues. 8/23 TURNER CLASSIC MOVIES, devoted the entire day to films by the great CONRAD VEIDT, who is truly a great actor. the mainstream has practically forgotten about him, like a lot of great artisits. VEIDT, who fled HITLER'S GERMANY in the 30's was always hung-up on his german accent and turned several "big roles" down because of it..he was an excellent golfer..he died in the late 40's. "THE MAN WHO LAUGHS" produced by UNIVERSAL STUDIOS was very bizarre yet touching at the same time.
@801liveable WHAT?! NO WAY!!!! First I miss Tuner Classic Movies' Lon Chaney day (Monday) and then I miss the one they did for Conrad????!!!!!! Life's not fair!!!!!!!!
Ahem.
Rant aside, yes, Conrad was an amazing actor and an incredibly wonderful human being. There truly aren't any more like him in today's world.
@MrThePandaman I just watched "Mask" today for the first time. Great movie on its own, but I loved the scene in it similar to this one. Some may call the disfigured guy/blind girl pairing cliche or melodramatic, but I think it's beautiful, when it's done in the right way. And for me, the number one example of this couple is always going to be Gwynplaine and Dea. Hell, they're the quintessential image of true love, period. They're perfect for each other, they were made for each other.
@pickleby I know! He looks overjoyed at that part! :)
Also, from how he was described in the book by Victor Hugo, it seems likely that yes, indeed, Gwynplaine had a Glasgow smile. In this movie, however, it seems like they fixed his lips into an immobile grin.
Thank you so much for uploading this scene! I really loved this movie, and this scene made me cry! lol Like, bawl for an hour. XD I had to pause the video to cry, that's how much I loved it. XD Conrad Veidt did such a great job as Gwynplaine! :D His eyes did a great job showing emotion while his face was stuck in a grin. XD I just love this movie so much. XD Thank you so much for posting this scene!
LOL I thought it was Lon Chaney for a while too. What great actors they both were. They emersed themselves so totally in all their roles that we can't even identify them.
Haha, I thought she was Mary Pickford for a second, but it's Mary Philbin instead. Also, what is with Lon Chaney and playing scary lookin' dudes?! Geeze.
That's a really amazing scene, though. I didn't expect it to be able to be so touching without me knowing the characters that well!! Really, really sweet.
Gwynplaine wasn't played by Lon Chaney, he was played by Conrad Veidt. Lon was originally supposed to play him, but his contract at the time wouldn't allow him to leave one film studio for another, even to do just a single movie, so the role ended up going to Conrad (who did a fantastic job).
The song is called "When Love Comes Stealing", I don't know the name of the singer, though. As for better quality, as far as I know, there isn't. This song was written roughly around 1923 but, so I read, didn't really gain popularity until it was used in this movie (which was made in 1928). I wish it was well-known today; it's a beautiful song.
I agree, the scene IS beautiful, and yes, "The Man Who Laughs" is fantastic. I actually prefer it over "The Hunchback of Notre Dame". I LIKE "Hunchback", don't get me wrong, I just like TMwL more. It's a great work by Hugo.
A friend of mine and I are planning to do a remake of this story someday in the future and stay true to the book. I can't wait to get started on it--I'm so excited.

I am a huge film fan, and this is one of my all-time favorites - a silent standout. I own a copy of the DVD, and I view it sparingly. Anyone who does not dig silent film should give this one a try. Thanks a lot for posting this clip.
Aw, made me cry. I'll have to hunt this one down too.
