I think Forsaken have the best backstory ever, their leader, Sylvanas, Was corrupted by Arthas's evil scourge powers, Who is now the lich king, and the Undead are the bodies that broke free from the evil scourge, and Arthas killed his father, the King of Lorderon, where the underground of it now holds the undercity, Home of Undead. Basicly, if Undead never existed, World of Warcraft would be a very different game. Power to the Forsaken!

go to the Bell Tower, and you can hear the broken bell tolling.

Go to the area between the bell and the Throne Room, and you can hear the cheering crowds from when Arthas returned to Lordaeron.

Go to the Throne Room, and what you are hearing is essentially one of the ending of Warcraft II. just search for Warcraft 3 human ending.

The Scourge infested Kalimdor just as bad as they did the Eastern Kingdoms, in my opinion. The only difference was that by the time they reached Kalimdor there were more demonic forces in use and relatively less undead. The "Scourge" is that entire force, not just the undead, so that is something to take into consideration. If it follows the Lich King, it is a part of the Scourge.

The Scourge is technically part of the giant war machine known as the Burning Legion. WoWWiki has a few good articles on the lore, but if it weren't for Kil'jaeden, the Lich King would never have existed, nor would the Scourge. All of those demons are part of the greater picture, not just the Scourge section of it. The Scourge are really the undead part of the equation though.

if you turn off all music ans Sound Effects in game, and put Ambience sounds to the max, go to the broken Bell Tower right before the Throne Room ,and atake a listen. you can hear the Ghostly tolling of the broken bells.

Go to the Throne Room, and you can hear parts of the Conversation between Arthas and Terenas, right up to when arthas killed his father. you can hear sentences such as "What are you doing?" (terenas)

"Succeeding You..." (Arthas)

After Lorderons demise, Atrhas began shaping the catacombs into a fortress but he was called to Northrend by Gul'Dan. During this time, Sylvannas invaded the Undercity and took it for the Forsaken, She finished its expansion and named it as the Capitol city of the Forsaken.
