Depends on the label, chances are if Biffy are signed to Sony etc they only see roughly 10-20% of profits split between the 3 members & thats AFTER their profits have covered the cost of making the album & paying for the contracts to be drawn up etc.
Indie labels tend to give more recognition to the artist who keeps the label going by giving a good 50+ percent.
But at that i'm still guilty of illegal downloading, see the concerts it is the best way for both fan & band to gain
@tvrulesnation no matter what label a band is on , they will still only get like 1 quid per record , so it really doesnt matter if you download or not, live performance is the only way they get money
the most bands don't see a cent for a sold cd, the most bands get rich by playing gigs and promoting...the money you pay for cd's is just to push the label, but it makes the band popular, that's a big pro about buying cd's
My opinion is that, yes, illegally downloading music is wrong, however it's not because of the money the record labels get, but because of the record sales going down. Biffy's albums could go gold or platinum if they went really well, but people illegally downloading stop the band's recognition, which irritates me. I have illegally downloaded music in the past, but when I do I listen to it for a while, while I save up for the album, then I buy the real album. I don't do it much anymore though.
@biffyclyrogirl i concure......why did they stray from such genious?? ah well i guess tubelord are the way forward now.......mon the biff, the biff are dead!
stealing from the record labels. the bands see barely any of the profits from record sales, they get their money from merchandise and live performances, which still sees them get obscenely rich. why should musicians get even more money anyway?
I agree that they become obscenely rich and that its not right but the fact is that it doesnt give us the right to steal from them because they are rich. David Becham is rich but doesnt mean we can steal his car because to him it isnt worth much. It is killing smaller bands who rely on record sales.
the music industry is changing, the smaller bands build up their profiles on social networking sites (just look at the arctic monkeys) and can then tour and make money off the back of that. they don't have to rely on record sales, and its not as if there's a shortage of new bands coming through in the age of piracy. also, stealing possessions is different from stealing copyrighted material - it's a different kind of ownership and a comparison is invalid
to a very small degree they are building up thier profiles on networking sites. They have to get semi popular first and then the sites can boost popularity. Doesnt matter who owns it or what ownership is on it, ITS STILL STEALING! and thus the comparison stands.
you have to get 'semi-popular' before you start selling cds anyway - the decline in cd sales is hitting the big labels more than the little guys, they're generally benefitting from the internet. additionally, i said at least twice that yes, it IS stealing but, again, it is entirely different from stealing somebody's actual possessions - there's no real comparison there. Stealing a car is wrong, in my opinion stealing digital media is not. Illegal does not equal wrong.
and a further point relating specifically to the band that we both seem to like. biffy are artists - rich artists - and as such they should be happy that i am appreciating their art. the money that i would have to spend on appreciating their art legally is far more valuable to me than it would be to them, and if it was a choice between buying cds and not listening to biffy then i would be forced to not listen to them
You still cant get around the point that it is still staeling, no matter how much you try and make it morally right, it isnt. I would love to have a dw drum kit but i cant because i cant afford it, i cant justify staeling it because dw should like it that i chose to steal their item because it was better. Doesnt add up!
pretty sure it's not staeling...but that aside, all i can say is that i completely disagree. think of it this way, if you steal that drum kit, whoever you stole it from is now down a drum kit. they previously had a drum kit and now they no longer do, because you have their drum kit. if you illegaly download a track that you would not otherwise have bought then nobody has lost anything. when i download this song, biffy gain a fan (a potential money payer at gigs), and lose nothing
sir bassline please add me on msn and send me high quality mp3ws of this album please? i cant find a good torrent and i dont want to wait like a week to hear it before i cna get my hands on a cd:)
order it on amazon and you will have to wait for 3 days only.. plus you support a great band and you will even get a proper cd with a fancy lookin woman on it..
