Organized religion is a sham...it's a set of rules for you to be chained to so that you'll refrain from being open minded. I'm not saying Jesus or God are fake, just the modern Christian church.
At the performance, they explained the rationale about why he's playing in a "church". Technically, it's actually a chapel. As such, they are open to services by all religion groups at Harvard (Christian, Hindu, Muslim, etc.) including Humanist, of which this is one. Hence, Greg is actually playing in a chapel for a Humanist activity and not in a "Christian Church".
Just because someone is an athiest doesn't mean they should feel out of place in a church or hesitate to play at one. Greg is only proving even further how much of an open and tolerant mind he has.
@BigPapaSmurfy Plus, what makes this song so great is that you can read/hear it from either an athiestic or religious mindset and it's meaning either way is awesome for which ever side you happen to be on. In my opinion, at least.
@hendenburg2 He's an atheist but prefers the term "naturalist". Or perhaps "Humanist" as this video is from when he won a humanist award from Harvard. Seems strange to give an award like that to a non-atheist.
@MassLiberal1, there are actually distinct differences. "atheist" literally means you believe in absolutely nothing. "naturalist" means you believe in the natural world, laws of physics etc... "humanist" means you believe in human values (law, ethics, logic) instead of supernatural values (dogma, rites, rituals, books with unknown authorship and origin) as the basis for a moral code.
@hendenburg2 No, 'atheism' doesn't mean belief in nothing, just non-belief in any deities. Although there's no necessity for atheists to also be humanists and naturalists most are. Indeed how can you even be a naturalist (no supernatural beleifs) w/o being an atheist? If you don't like the atheist label fine, but if you lack a belief in gods that's what you are. Atheist=Humanist=Naturalist.
@MassLiberal1 Again, not true. the first Humanists and Naturalists were Renaissance Christians. Deism, which was a form of Christianity started by Sir Isaac Newton and his contemporaries, stated that God created the universe according to the laws of physics that we observe and study today. God then proceeded to walk away and not interfere. being either humanist or naturalist does not automatically make someone an atheist
@hendenburg2 Deism isn't compatible w/ a consistent naturalism. Unless the deist god is also a product of nature, but then why call it 'God'? And how is deism is a form of Christianity? They explicitly reject the miracles that the Christian religion is said to be founded on.
@hendenburg2 no but Greg Graffin is an atheist he doesn't believe in god I know I've read Anarchy evolution and it's apparent if you listen to almost any Bad Religion song.
@Nirvana451994Cobain as i explained to MassLiberal1, "atheist" and "humanist" and "naturalist" are not the same thing. it's like calling a "nihilist," (destroy everything) an "anarchist" (destroy government and society) and an "anarcho-syndachist" (destroy government but keep society) the same thing.
Wiki it. Humanists and all of that aren't really grouped as a religion for what they believe happens after they die or any of that traditional stuff, it's more about, and I'm not an expert on any religion, like...the beliefs in liberalism and all of that. I don't know. Just Wiki it.
