I have eye tics, throat tightening, scrunching my eyebrows down while bobbing my head slightly, grumbling, finger squeezing, forced "chills" and constantly having to move my toes into a "Ball shape" if that's how you say. I've had these and TONS of others since I was 9, So I picked up smoking cigarettes 4 years ago and It helps ease the tics for short periods.

Thanks 4 showing us what Tourette syndrome is!!! I just now seen on the news "Bizarre Mystery Illness Strike Group of New York Teens: 12 girls exhibit Tourette syndrome". These girls all attend the same high scholl and their parents want CDC to get involved and find out what happened to their girls. WoW scary
Take this kid to a N.U.C.C.A. specialist. I believe he can definitely be helped...Chicago,IL. has a great one also former nucca teacher in Ames,Ia. the one I see is awsome!! you wont believe the difference.
My 7 year old son does this, shoulder shrugging, pushing his chin out and blinking. The doctor says its normal for this age to have some tics and not to worry, should I be trying to find out if its tourettes or should I ignore it?
@TeamStephenson What I found to be the case was I thought my son had about 3 tics the neck roll, flexing his wrists, and a facial tic like scrunching his face. When I put a camera on him I was shocked to see that he had over 15 different tics. Additionally, a vocal tic which is necessary for the dx of tourettes can be something you are so used to because he may have been doing it for so long and its so subtle like a throat clearing, or just a little noise, or a sniff.
@mysarip hi there, thanks for replying to me. I sent a message to you inbox as it wouldn't let me comment yesterday. I did record him and was wondering what you think?
@TeamStephenson cont) the question you should ask yourself. How long have the tics lasted. Transiant tic disorder is common and tics do come and go, however if they last for a year there is a risk of them becoming permanent. Also, do the tics cause problems with his functioning. you are not going to want to medicate him for something he can live with. (continued)
@TeamStephenson Cont 3, also, are the tics interfering with his school work. This is often misdiagnosed as ADHD because the child is never still. Also they have what looks like poor attention, and really they do, because when you are always uncomfortable, your brain is not free to take in other information, such as "wear red tomorrow because it is spirit day" I was constantly confused as to why my son, who has an IQ of 146 was so unaware of simple things.
@TeamStephenson last reply :) I would watch him for a while maybe video tape him while he is doing something like I have done. You will get a better Idea of how serious it is. Count his tics, per hour. And consider, 7 is the typical age of onset. It tends to worsen as they go through puberty so certainly keep an eye on him. But don't rush into medication. Good Luck!
@TeamStephenson I noticed it in my son when he was around 5, and some motor tics left and other developed, as well as vocal tics began in puberty. He was only diagnosed with ADHD until it was pretty noticable by 12 yrs old. He has Tourette's, and OCD and Sensory Integration Disorder. I would go to a good Neurologist and insist your Pediatrician listen and refer you to one, along with a good therapist or Pychologist for proper diagnosis. It helps with the school and his rights.
i blink hard and my neck forces itself to the side as my shoulders shrug. sometimes i also make a weird face, like im wincing oddly. or sometimes my ears will pop constintely and ill make a wierd sound. most of the time i cant breathe when i do it. but i kinda like being different.
@thextrabenchwarmer you have a great perspective. Dealing with this is all about how you feel about yourself. My son's neurologist has tics, and she wrinkles her nose and blinks, and I think its kinda cute. Not being able to breath is probably an internal tic, maybe of your diaphram, hopefully that will go away, cause that sounds uncomfortable.
Ugh, i've was diagnosed with tourettes 10 years ago, the worst i had was shaking my head in the fifth grade, gave me terrible headaches. Honestly the way i got it rid of it is by replacing it with another tic, rolling my hand around stretching my wrist bone isn't painful at all, and less annoying to myself and others.
hey guys i had this same thing except worse for 1 full year of my life when i was in 2-3rd grade, but strangely it went away the more i exersised, thats the only advice i can give you, a lot of the time it goes away the older you get, exercising truely will help you increase your will power over your body trust me.
I am suspecting that my son also has Tourette. but have not took a neuro, despite doing exactly this movement of his neck as his son does not yet have a diagnosis. has already been a month since he started doing and he is 6 years. I'd like more information about it. already thanks!
my son is nine and also has Ts with the same tics ,to help with his pain and headaches he is now on clonidine which works very well in reducing the severty of the head tics and he no longer suffers headaches as often.Without medication he was in so so much pain and hin hospital with sevre migraines as a result of tics.Have you talk over the possibilities of medicine to help? Again i am here with you also.x
@tanziep1e i have ts since i was 8 or 9 yrs old and im 16 yrs old right now and im still on medicine for it so yea and i also blink to much and i twitch my head i also twich other things on my body too but its not fun being made fun of and go home crying ive been there before and now im homeschooled because of that
just asking: does your son feel a need to do the tic? like, is there an uncofortable feeling in his neck and he does the movement to get rid of the feeling?
I used to tic like that a few months ago, a little worse. I would do a rotation from one shoulder to the other until my neck cracked. It hurt so bad doing it every few minutes and people find it difficult to understand why I can't stop, why I have to do it when it hurts. Thankfully that tic just disappeared.
people who dont have it dont understand, its all in our head, its a habit, ask anyone who has it. its all about our movement being exact and even.. its a complicated thing. and its tourturous to the mind.
I think if you have a combination of these types of tics you could have Tourettes or another tic disorder. You need to go to a neurologist to really know. It was helpful for me to know that a lot of his movements that we always thought of as a normal way he moves were actually tics and went away when medicated. Also the constant throat clearing. The hums. The low under the breath laughs. Nothing really to make anyone notice. I wouldn't have known with out having YouTube to watch other peoples t
Awe.. I feel your pain. I also have a 9 year old son with Tics. He would roll his neck and eyes, fidget his fingers, ect. But he is doing fairly well with Clonidine. Good luck on your journey. Im there with you!
omg. i do something similar with my heasd. its like an involuntary movement. i also shrug one shoulder sometimes. too. do you think i could have tourettes?
so does anyone know how to fix these tics? i had this sort of neck/shoulder jerking for 3 years (i'm 16... i had this tic and other tics as a child but they all went away pretty soon) and it doesn't look like it'll be going away. as of the 'mental' aspects, i do tend to be a bit anxious but other than that, i am.. normal haha. it's just this tic that's been driving me insane and it makes me tired quickly and it really makes me feel kind of depressed.
i have tics like this. but the thing with me, i will develope new tics out of the blue and some of my old ones go away. but then they suddenly come back in afew dwys, or months.
He has ben on a very veryy low dose of clonidine for a while now, over 6 months, and also we get his upper cervical neck adjusted, since he did serious damage to it. His tics are 99% gone at 9 years old, as long as I keep him off the computer and off sugar and caffeine. Also stress has to stay low. He is working with a therapist who will work on tic reversal with them when they start to break through the meds.
@Chris0151Mc I'm very aware that it is a neurological disorder-since I have it- the treatment is called Habil Reversal Training because it's also used for people who have OCD, anxiety disorders, ADD/ADHD, etc.
@freakzunited2 You know what's CRAZY is back in the 80's I was in elementary school and that is when my tics were probably at their worse.. I actually came up with habit reversal on my own not even knowing I had "tourettes" I just started resisting certain urges to twitch.. I resisted them with everything I had (not saying it's always easy or even possible, depends on how severe your urge is) and eventually they died out after a few months of resisting. Changing up your diet also works wonders
Thanks for the suggestion, Luckily we did get him to a neuro, and he is on Tenex and doing a little better. We do have to build up gradually, as it make him very tired, and have horrible headaches.
I feel bad for your son I also, have the same tourrets. I have twitches in my neck which, hurts once and a while. I'm very sorry you have to watch him go through this.
thank you, and I agree the neck tic hurts, I tried it as a test they have on a turettes site, and I don't have tourettes, and it hurts just to do it as a test. I hope I can help him before his neck is really bad. We took him to 3 drs before and none of them said anything about tourettes.
