I think choosing the alpha male as a sexual partner has to do with the long history of brutal nature. For so many years we lived among animals and the females were much weaker so they had the need to have the biggest, tallest, strongest male next to them to be safe from other tribes and within their own. You can see that even today, as much as women deny it, go at the beach and observe how they look at the fittest guys, its a natural reaction based on history of human evolution.

@szapryanov3 It's kind of ironic, I remember reading an article about men in certain cultures who prefered heavier women because they were more likely to survive hard times. In wealthy developed countries it's quite the opposite(in a sickening unreal way) Goes to show how different ideals are influenced by circumstance/enviroment I guess.

Mystery proved that women don't choose "nice men" during sexual selection. They choose the alpha males. Perhaps if she had met the "nice guy" she'd have changed her mind.

This is no argument against the dominating force of "alpha-males" in a species...

people simply must see the cruel truth that the "alpha-male" (ruthless, etc.) in many species is NOT the real alpha-male. That the alpha-male IS the nice, kind, caring one...

I postulate that all species have a changeable "genetic memory", which records the particular specie's expectations as to what qualities are required for continued existence. Subconsciously, the organism perceives changes in their environment which require change and, more or less, this "ideal or required" condition manifests itself in the mutations between generations.

@B4IRUTUARU16 It may even go further then just skin/eyes/and heigth. What if we started successfully combing our DNA with other animals? A cop with the nose of a bloodhound and the speed of a cheetah, or a surfer with the demeanor of a shark. I'd love to see where this could go, but sadly I only have a single life that I know of and I think that's still quite a bit off. But you never know, in 70 years we learned to fly and put a man on the moon.

@GBart, because women by and large lie about the whole "just be nice and be yourself" bullshit. It rarely works the way it is described. Almost every girl I've ever been close friends with had a history of hooking up with assholes. Most of these girls I didn't want to be sexual with anyway, after getting to know them the way I did, but some of them I could tell were friends  with me because I was the nice "non threatening" guy. I found it quite fascinating.

Would the idea of altruism in individuals for strangers be for the reason of social evolution?A realisation of the need for not just the individual,but the species to survive.

I don't think it's any sort of realization. It's an evolved trait, not something that has come about through a realization. I think that it happened just because the individuals in groups that would work together would do better and survive better than those individuals who would just rely on themselves to get what they need often at the expense of other individuals they encoutered.
