Calvin made his move just a hair too early, and had too much traffic to manuever through. Those are the cons of late breaking horses though, you take the good with the bad. You don't always get an ideal path along the rail, and it especially wasn't going to happen after the Derby. The rest of the field was ready for it.

This distance of this race was perfect for RA. They didn't enter her in the Derby or the Belmont for a reason.

She wasen't entered in the derby because she had a different owner that didn't believe the girls should run with the boys. She was sold after the derby and thats why she was running with the boys. I met both horses at the preakness. She is beautiful but he is by far the sweetest horse you will ever see. I hope he wins one more time.

The filly is alright. She is a great horse but if you start to choke after going a mile and a half, you definetly can't hang with the big boys. And just so you know, the track record at Finger Lakes for the Derby distance is 2:05+ on a fast track. There was a 40,000 N2xAlw at Laurel this past winter that was around 2:06 and 4/5. Gulfstream also had an N3x Alw for mares on the turf that went 2:04. So I'm guessing that 2:02 and 3 in the slop in the Derby against MULTIPLE Grade I winners would indicate a non-claiming horse. Very talented filly and ran a very impressive race. If Mine that Bird didn't have to swing so far to the outside after coming around the final turn, I think he could have beat her though by 1/2 or 1 length. Absolutely he will probably win the Belmont. He closed incredibly fast from a difficult spot two thirds or so of the race through. He ran incredibly well. The filly is great too. But I worry about injury to her. It's great stress for her to feel the heat of those stallions gaining behind her. Her margin of victory was much less, and I think if Mine that Bird had been able to get thru the pack more easily he would have won going away.
