hello, you dont have a video of how to make a helmet, because i am starting a cosplay armor, and the character is like a knight, but i dont know how to make the helmet and the hands.
"Glue or Bond" I've searched several stores including Lowes and a local craft store, and most don't have a clue what I'm asking for. What is a good brand name equivalent to the bond you use that I can pick up at the hardware store?
@ishouldplayzelda actually Automail is mostly made of steel rather than just metal. Besides, if you want a full METAL arm like that it'll be heavy as hell and cost way too much
@ishouldplayzelda Steel has some metal in it, but it's an alloy with other ingredients, and therefore technically should not be called a metal. Go LEARN. Anyway to make it with fiberglass or something would be more accurate and less heavy/expensive
@idkwdya1 The prices on Goldy's web page are in yen but items are mostly made for customers in Japan as shipping internationally costs quite a bit. On his youtube site here we hope to help you out so you can make what you want on your own.
Have you tried any other fabrics out to test if they work? I can't seem to find the color I need with Vinyl, what are your thoughts on stretch PVC or latex sheeting?
Also, the details in your vids (like the inner screw shapes and whatnot) how are they done? Was the fabric simply pressed in until it conformed to the dipped shape? Have you tried painting onto the vinyl fabric? (say for texture/wear) If so, what would you recommend that wouldn't chip/flake? Thanks so much!!
@anokir We have tried a lot of other fabrics and we have found the "2 way enamel" material works best for this method. Whatever works for you though, the joy of cosplay is making awesome stuff from what you can find around you. We find that PVC or other materials wont stretch well over round parts and can leave wrinkles in the finish. Also it's a little heavier, all of Goldy's costumes are made to fit into 2 duffel bags as he travels a bit. We use light material to avoid weight restrictions.
@anokir The detailing like the bolts and stuff would be better explained in a video, you can kind of see the vinyl application process in this video /watch?v=vugy-x0hiGk at the 6 minute and 30 second mark. That is a flat piece of urethane so you can't really see the stretching involved for a rounded part. Both of these points would be better explained in videos so we'll work on that in the future.
Paint does't stick well to the urethane, that's why we use the vinyl material so not sure on that.
@HisanaHime We get the urethane material from Tokyu Hands in Japan. You can see more about the material at the 1 minute and 31 second point in this video: /watch?v=vugy-x0hiGk
@RiRiSmi We attach them by velcro, use bond to attach 2 pieces at the appropriate location inside the automail and attach bits at the end of the wire to connect them. They are removable as well.
@m0rph0logy Ah, I see! I'm planning to cosplay as Seth Balmore from Lost Odyssey. She has quite intricately detailed arm armour. I was worried about connecting digits as I wanted to make sure my fingers were able to flex while wearing the armour.
I'm planning on making mine by hand just to look like a cheap replica to save time: using a bunch of plastic cups, acryilic paint, some plaster... elastic bands... and a black synthetic material for the arm.
@Silentwolf123 Sorry for answering for Goldy, I am the guy in the video. I have seen Polyurethane foam sold online and we're looking for ways to get the material out to you. You can buy the material easily at any hardware store in Japan like Tokyu Hands.
A) Please check the response to the question from @EdElricFanx
B) Naturally before cutting the urethane foam we will start out with the cardboard patterns such as those that you can see at the start of the Evangelion video
@bloporz Ces't tres dificile d'ecrire tout dans beaucoups des langues mais peut etre on peut ecrire les mots anglais dans le area d'explenation et vous pourrais traduir ca en francais sur l'internet.
1) you could but I can't make any promises on how the finish will look. Even with the vinyl if you spread the bond unevenly underneath the finish will come out bumpy and not ideal. Spreading the bond evenly under the vinyl is a technique that can only be learned through regular practice.
2) Well, yes. We'll use these terms interchangeably in Japan but the problem is whether you can find the same material or not internationally. Any foam based material can suffice.
@EdElricFanx The standard is 0.5 mm polyurethane, you can get them at hardware shops in Japan like Tokyu Hands in pieces that are 50cm x 50cm. When we create the initial cardboard models for the pieces we keep this in mind and don't make any pieces larger than what can fit on a 50cm x 50cm board. If you use imperial get out a calculator ;)
Wow this video is amazing! The final product is the best I have seen on YouTube so far, I need to try and make at least part of this before October as I am trying to cosplay as Ed Elric for then, how long roughly did it take you to get the materials together and construct the hand and forearm? And how much should I be prepared to pay for materials to create those parts as I have heard it can get expensive :)
@BeingHumanRocks1 Getting the material for an entire Gundam robot can be around 300 US but for just automail it cant be more that 100 US for the materials. If your real stuck you can get Goldy to make it for you and have him send it to you, check out his web page an send him a message directly for that.
@XxMusicXxFreakazoidX Whatever works for you, usually we use 5mm thickness for general body parts, 2mm thickness for highly detailed parts and super thick maybe 5cm thickness stuff for elevated boots. Try different thicknesses out and see what works for you!
@XxMusicXxFreakazoidX A detailed list of materials and where to find them are good ideas for a FAQs list and future videos down the road. To answer your question briefly we use "Urethane" covered by "2 way Enamel". These are products found in Japan and the terms for them may be different where you are. Again clarifying this is something that we want to do in upcoming work.
@shin7cloud Goldy has a list of items for sale on his web page, you can get there by clicking on the "Goldymarg" link above the video which goes to his youtube account. @lukasas301 We use a vinyl material called "2 Way Enamel" (2 Way エナメル) or "Larisa" (ラリッサ)in Japan. It is essentially the same material used in making plastic or pleather looking clothes. Think Michael Jackson Thriller jacket. - that kind of material. That is attached to a polyurethane board to give it the metallic look.
You could use craft foam but it is thinner, heavier and has less structure than lion board. We're trying to work out a method where we could send lion board abroad. The vinyl material is called "2 Way Enamel" (2 Way エナメル) or "Larisa" (ラリッサ)in Japan. It is essentially the same material used in making plastic or pleather looking clothes. Think Michael Jackson Thriller jacket. - that material.
@m0rph0logy If you are the guy who made this video, could you make another one showing you making the arm (how to cut it, how to make details, where to get what stuff to make it, stuff like that)? I'm trying my best to make this thing but it's made of PAPER! It dosn't even look good either! I need some serious help with this. Can you make another vid? I bet it would help alot of people. ( PS: If you REALLY want to help me out, if you make another vid, show how to make his leg) bspell9@gmail.com
@TikTokToxic I am the guy in the videos. We will be moving on to other parts of the body but its kind of tough to make videos regularly at the moment with the earthquake and we live about 500 km away from each other. Thanks for your comment, we are continuing to make videos and we'll get to the arm in time.
one question. can i use craft foam (foamy) instead of the foam you used?????? like the one that comes in sheets the size of a paper sheet. and the vinyl material, what is it exactly????
@MiniPwnage Good question, I was just talking to Goldy about making a video on it, we'll see if we have time this weekend. The urethane foam material (Lion board) will allow you to melt and mold it slightly.
@m0rph0logy i've been kinda debating whether i should build the automail or not. the thing is that i'm cosplaying as paninya from fullmetal alchemist and her design is simpler (without the grill is an example). but your vid is starting to motivate me to build it. the final product looks amazing!
a few more questions: does the automail allow full mobility of the arm or is there some hinderance? and how do you attach it to the body?
@MiniPwnage unlike some of the full body armor suits (check out the Gurren Lagann video) the automail gives you virtually full mobility, no significant hindrance but I don't think you would want to be swinging your arm around and around.
You don't need to attach it at all, there is enough to the chest that it sits comfortably on the shoulder.
@m0rph0logy well, i don't exactly have a lot of time. the con is in august and i still wanna plan a budget and i still have to buy other supplies. is it possible for you to tell me how via private messaging or something? i'd really appreciate it.
I would like to know if any further steps are done when glueing the vinyl to the layered urethane? For example, we see the screw details which wouldn't be visible unless we pushed the vinyl down into the detail or heated it to make it easily conform to the details.
@Specklezz hmm good question. The rivets do just kind of appear in the video, joining pieces with rivets and also detailing with metal pieces make excellent material for upcoming videos, thanks for the feedback and we will put a video together on it.
I feel dumb for asking but to get that layering effect, I simply superglue the top layer to the bottom later and put a coat of the bonding agent on top of both of them for the vinyl?
@wuwu007 All questions are good ones! Look at 0:43 and 0:47 to see the before and after for the layering effect. It is essentially the same thing as applying the vinyl material - you apply a layer of bond between the 2 layers.
Take a look at the first video here watch?v=vugy-x0hiGk for information on the bond used but we will definitely be doing a video on layering in the future. Like I say in this video, its just a look at what is possible with Goldys technique. Keep checking back!
@AstrayVision I'm speaking in the video, thanks for your comment! Cutting 45 degree angles in the urethane foam and attaching the 2 pieces together can be tough, we'll make a video for you!
