@ 22:30 Its facinating seeing Nimoy playing out this scene. He's Jewish and I understand he maintained a holicost museum sometime in the late 70s or early 80s. For all I know, he still does. But hearing him speak about the charactor Kodos and drawing paralells to Hitler, I find his passion in this scene strangely appropriate, not for Spock but for Leonard Nimoy.
At 20:15, "Has the machine changed women? Made them just people instead of women?" Wow... what a question!!! I think that has happened although I don't think the machine age is the reason. I think its in the unintended damage political correctness has done to human relations.
Sweetly sad. I've always had a liking for Kirk's blonds...and by always, I mean since I was seven and watching the combination of original series and TNG episodes a local station used as filler. I had a child's massive crush on Kirk, was scared of Picard (although I now like him!), and didn't understand why the ship and crew kept changing (the episodes were aired randomly). I always liked the Kirk-girls' glorious clothes and hair...and that they didn't last long enough to get in the way!
Originally, Riley was "Robert Daiken" in Barry Trivers' first draft scipt (the one James Blish adapted into short story form in one of the first paperback volumes). In a rare example of continuity, once Bruce Hyde was cast in the role, someone remembered he appeared as "Kevin Riley" before ["The Naked Time"], and the character became "Riley". Unfortunately, this was also his final appearance.
"...and this ship, all this power, surging and throbbing, yet under control; Are you like that Captian?" WOW! I NEVER NOTICED HOW OVERTLY PORNOGRAPHIC THE LINES IN THIS SHOW WERE... Whew! I need a cigarette, cold shower and a drink. lol
I'm confused. Tom Leyton spoke of "That bloody thing [Kodos] did" and how Kodos butuchered the colonists. Then Spock was talking to McCoy in the hallway and spoke of the colonists dying quickly and without pain? Don't get me wrong it's still messed up either way. I guess it's kinda like Spock defaming alcohol but on "Requriem for Methusalem" Spock was sipping brandy, and on Alpha Memory, you do see mention of traditional Vulcan alcoholic beverages.
@tribunalfunk In other words, Spock's words were inappropriate given the situation. That is a general failing of the original series. It's a valid complaint you've made; the writers of t.v. shows in the 60's and 70's really overcooked the drama; to the point where much of it is just blatantly obvious the way characters become tools to deliver political speeches to the audience.
I never tire of watching Lenore Karidian cracking up at the end. The close-up of her eyes at 46:13 is awesome. Barbara Anderson. Another in the long line of Star Trek hotties. Meowwwww.
Kirk don't discriminate. Blck hoes, white hoes, green hoes, purple hoes, crazy hoes, murderous hoes...it don't matter to good old James T. As long as she has a pulse and some form of vaginal orifice, it's a go!
@MarkOates Are you kidding? As long as it's of legal age, he's all over it in seconds. He was darn close to making a move on Miri, God knows he was flirting with her mercilessly.
I had the good fortune to meet Arnold Moss late in his life and he lamented that everyone remembered him mostly for this Star Trek episode but he at least pretended to be glad that he was doing Shakespeare even on TV. He was a gracious, kind man and I really enjoy seeing his excellent work in this episode.
To be honest, this is a favorite early episode of mine. I remember waking up from a bad dream, and flipping on the TV to channel 4 around 5:00 AM. There it was, starting right exactly on the moment that the episode started. usually, I get grumpy and find waking up to normal TV programs around that time of the morning a great pain. But theres something about these old Star Trek episodes that's just easy on all my senses when I wake up in the morning.
@BondFreek Maybe not, but it encouraged, every guy with an open shirt, under a disco ball. WFT....the surging and throbbing line....when were you gonna hear that on 60s TV?
@PIII550. To what comment are you answering? PS. Disco balls and open shirts did not happen till the mid 70's. This is the 60's. Free love, make love not war, girls warring nothing under their dresses and flowers in their hair, "pass the needle please I want to experience God". You know that sort of crap.
@BondFreek Yeah, that's my point. Shatner and his like led the way to the 70's. I didn't know the significance of the 'Disco is Dead' T-shirts when I was in 5th or 6th grade. But I remain grateful for them, to this day. And yes, it was '66 or so, and it did take a little while for the disco ball to get rolling. I don't get it. If there were 8000 people total, and the guy killed 4000, how come only 9 are left who saw him? (Thanks, though, to a previous commenter who explained that Kirk was likely orphaned during the killing). I also don't get why spock would see anything wrong with this very logical killing -- except that maybe fewer could have been killed at first.
"9 who saw him". He did have solders you know. Governs and head officials don't work alone. You forget that Spock is also a pacifist like all Vulcans. Remember the second reason why Sarak did not want Spock to join Starfleet? It is a military outfit.
What happened to the other 3,991 people? Kirk and Riley would have been kids so I doubt they were soldiers. (I don't remember much about future episodes; it has been too long. We are re-watching with our 9-year-old.)
Watch the episode over and over till you understand it because I explaned it as best I can. I don't understand how you can't understand the story I got it the first time I watched it and I was 7 years old.

@SpicyTaco29, Let me try to explain it kid. Kodos when he was governor of an earth colony was under extreme pressure to provide food and water. He calculated that by the time the emergency relief crafts arrive the entire colony Including Kirk would be dead unless the population was cut in half. Instead of putting faith in his fellow man he decided to play god. This is the dangers of giving power to the government. Even good men get corrupted by power.
@foxboy3000 Don't be so melodramatic. So, what if it does not have explosions, gun fights or fist fights? It still has a moral that everyone of every age should learn.
@AuroraStarW Hell, Think that's bad? Try Dority in the Wizard of Oz. PS you forgot he fantsiesed he ex lover on a dream filling planet. what has the world come to (Oh MY!) Just a thought :)
@AuroraStarW kirk also sweet talked 14 yr old Miri (even though she was realy 300 yrs old she was still a child) and Karidian's daughter was only 19 but dont stop there, Kirk's into older chicks too.
Also, I like how complex the story is. You think maybe Kodos could put his past behind him, but it comes out in his daughter's actions. Very Shakespearean!!!
@serfky01 No, depends on the guy. It was considered more attractive at the time I beleive. With all the nationalism. I don't prefer blondes, personally.
Ok been watching these again all I can say is at 30:48 with the alarm going off and all that Kirk has to say over the intercom "double red alert" what the hell is that and what Is kirk smoking haha
wat da hell damn ass fuck shit put da knife up day pussy and fuck it up god damet sht fuck that will make day periond start shove it up day tender hole fuckit bitch fit spok he a damn elf
If you guys thought this episode was interesting, you should read Shatner's new book Collision Course. It talks directly about Kirk's time on Tarsus IV and it's rather interesting if you ask me.
I have never seen this episode. Nice.

ItsMrFloyd 1 year ago
How old do you figure Kirk is in this episode? He's hitting on a 19 yr old (better than jailbait, but still). I'd say he's 30.
Washu151 2 years ago
Kirk is 31 when he takes command of the Enterprise in this timeline - since the mission is 5 yrs he's got to be somewhere between 31 and 36
NOTHING STANDS IN THE WAY OF KIRK'S FLIRTING lol

Did Spock teach Uhura how to play the Vulcan Lyre?
arelimoon29 2 years ago
They have a relationship in the "When They All Met" Movie that came out about a year ago. I'm sure her taught her MANY things! LOL
surfingmermaid 2 years ago
The Reboot AU? Yeah, they have a relationship there but not in TOS.

I wish I had something other than a "Mr." in front of my name. Maybe I'll change my first name to Captain.

Captain Kirk is such a pimp.
ManBearPigWolf 2 years ago 6
Also, I like how complex the story is. You think maybe Kodos could put his past behind him, but it comes out in his daughter's actions. Very Shakespearean!!!

Why are the women always blonde? Does being blonde make you that much more attractive?
serfky01 2 years ago
for me it does.
houseofrandomshit 2 years ago
It's just a Kirk thing.
JohnyVirgil 2 years ago
@serfky01 No, depends on the guy. It was considered more attractive at the time I beleive. With all the nationalism. I don't prefer blondes, personally.
Salger12 2 years ago
they used to have them all but i don't know what happened

I think Willam Shakesbear himself would approve of this episode.

episode 14 is called Balance of Terror, someone should have it posted, but I agree, CBS should have it posted, they are missing too many episodes.

What an excellent episode. Such a thought-provoking theme, and so beautifully written!
And Spock has so much energy almost passion. Its almost human! ;)

If you guys thought this episode was interesting, you should read Shatner's new book Collision Course. It talks directly about Kirk's time on Tarsus IV and it's rather interesting if you ask me.
xXTheSharpestLifeXx 2 years ago
I'm reading that book right now! That's why I decided to come watch this episode again actually.
tmw1488 2 years ago 2
Do you like it? I thought it was a little slow at first but half way through I couldn't put it down! :)
