This is the movie that got me into anime. Found it on VHS in my local movie store back in the 90¨s. It was the only non american animated movie in the store, and they only had one copy. For almost 20 years this has by far been the movie that has made the largest impression on me. This is a movie you'll love.
I've noticed you used the Japanese voice-acting, does the blu ray have the English voice actors as well? I really want to see this movie, but I don't want to rely on subtitles to get what they're saying.
@cavedweller1996 Yes it does include English Dub (voice over)! And yeah, I agree, sometimes subtitles can a bit much sometimes and kind of takes away from actually watching the movie :p
Ok this is kinda a random awkward question but ive owned several versions of this movie and ive noticed this. Are the sound effects and music different in the japanese audio than the english audio? @VoiceOfReasonGP thanks for the review man i just found this anime movie out and im 12 years old and i saw the ending because i checked out a 5 best anime transformation and i saw this and i was really freaked out im like scared as fudge im gonna check the movie out
Fantastic review I fucking love this movie I remember seeing tetseuo's transformation at the end as a little kid with my dad, and wow that sure left a huge impact on me back in the day.
Ohh and the animation just friggin blew me away. Lots of famouse VERY FAMOUSE manga artist and manga creators have said that if it wasnt for akira, they would have never started drawing (exmple Masashi Kishimoto-creator of Naruto, Takeshi Obata, Tsugmi Obha- creator of DEATH NOTE)
"Who names their own mouses?" Rofl this review is brilliant! I watched Akira but I was really young and didn't uderstand the plot and the ending was just disturbing to me XD But after thi review i see that this movie was infact brilliant :D Oh and ven as a kid i could see the artwork was beyond perfection ;D
Great review man, and yes, Akira is just a masterpiece, a must have for anybody who considers him self a cinephile, anime fan, visual artist, or aspiring filmaker.
This film is on another level. You can't really compare Akira to something from Disney because Disney animation is all simplicity and believability in movement; as where the Japanese focus more on the mechanical and technical aspects of animation as well as photorealistic backgrounds. They are both great in their own right; but cater to a different taste.
@martin622292 Not quite sure if I understand ur question buddy, however if you are wondering if there is any noticable difference between this blu-ray version and the previous released DVD versions. The answer is a definite YES, haha. And yeah, only blu-ray disc are playable on blu-ray players but not on DVD players. However, you can still play DVDs in blu-ray players :D
@VoiceOfReasonGP how do you not understand the question, how hard is it to understand his question? either you are trying to sound smart, or you have the inteligence of a 5 year old that cant understand a simple question
love this movie, thanks for the BR review, had the DVD for ages, but last week, oh last week I was in a junk shop and I found a Akira on VHS! for $1 it's so cool, red plastic case and all, anything else of similar nature to Akira that you'd recommend?
@dreamingthelife O_o an original Akira VHS case? Dang that's quite a find there buddy. Is it in good condition? I sure there are some collector's out there somewhere who wouldn't mind putting money down for a rarity such as that, haha.
And in terms of recommendations, off the top of my head not really. Maybe Ghost in the Shell (which I hear is also underway at getting a much needed HD remaster makeover!) would be somewhat similar to Akira. But keep in mind, we are talking about Akira here :p
I've yet to see this movie(Don't worry it will be the next thing I purchase), so this comment may not be completely valid, but I wanted to respond to one of your comments. You were discussing how in America our animation was not at all detailed, and while it is not as detailed as what I'm seeing from Akira so far, Heavy Metal is a good example of the contrary. If you haven't seen it you might want to take a look. It was made in 1981, and was a very detailed adult animated movie.
@xboxmods ah yes, that is one animated movie that gets overlooked to frequently. I have seen Heavy Metal and do remember it being quite an influential movie for North America animation artists.
@xboxmods The only problem i have with that movie is that its less about story and more about cleavage and action. It feels more like a exploitive adult film. Oh and by the way its from canada not the united states.
Is the color fixed in the blu-ray edition? I know that when they remastered it in 2001, the colors got screwed up, resulting in stuff that should be red-red, appear more orangey red. ie: Kaneda's bike and outfit.
Most people wouldn't really care about the sound on dvd's so long as you can hear it and see it. But this bluray release was aimed towards the home theater people. Not that you still can't enjoy it. I mean come on, it's Akira. I've been a fan since 2001 (9 years) and its that good of a film. But yeah, if you have the latest surround sound systems and whatnot, you can take full advantage of the movie. But if you want the extra features, its best to get the special edition dvd. It's your choice.=)
Is the Blu-ray version only voiced in the remastered edition or Is there any place I would be able to purchase this with the original English dubbing on Blu-ray.
Sorry, the remastered version completely ruins the movie for me and if it came down to it, I'd stick with the Pioneer version on normal dvd over the blu-ray dubbing (if exact to remastered).
Still have my 20+ yr VHS of this and this new one just doesn't translate the same.
I've heard that the Pioneer version is the best buddy. But like I said with other fans, in order to get the most out of a great and wonderful movie like Akira, is to see it in its original form which is with Subtitles.
I rarely, watch Dubbed animations anymore...I just get a better sense of what the movie actually is. Like with Ghost in The Shell! Thanks for the view buddy!
No problem, I appreciated the review and quick response here. I've never watched the original version with the subs, most of my hesitance is being comfortable with the voice of the characters. For me, a movie gives a different feel based on the voice of the characters, even if the meaning was broken down the same. I don't know if I'm talking in circles, but I'm going to check it out with subs. I did it with Samurai Champloo and think it's way better than what was released on Cartoon Network.
@VoiceOfReasonGP Akira on bluray uses a 50GB disc. It has Dolby True HD 5.1 Japanese 192khz, Dolby True HD 5.1 English 48khz, PCM Stereo Japanese 48khz, and Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound Japanese 48khz. These 4 audio tracks make up to around 4/10 space with visuals being 5/10 which is why there are only trailers for special features and a still gallery. The English track is the 2001 dub while the Japanese is original. English=realistic sound effects while Japanese=1988 SFX, but louder music.
Hey, was just wondering, do you prefer the English Dub from the original '88 edition or the '01 remaster. A lot of people have said they liked the original, but for me personally i liked the newer one. Also great review, I saw this movie last year and im 15 now. I know im like 20 years late, but that movie was fantastic, i also read the graphic novel series, which seemed a lot different lol.
The very 1st time I saw Akira, I saw it in Subtitles since I rarely like any Dubbed animes because I feel you lose a sense of emotion during the translations. However, I have seen the remastered version in English and I did find it quite good and had no complaints! :)
I kinda disagree with "if you don't know about Akira sit and watch this review" because it ~exploits~ all the fruits of the movie :p
When I first saw it I was walking along the anime section and saw a dark cover with an explosion :] Then I saw it and was extremely impressed how the anime is sooo fluid and just no comment......
I was 6 when I first watched this movie with my brother and I got nightmares from it. When I got older I bought a copy for myself and I loved it. I still got my big Akira poster on my wall.
Hey, Very good review of a movie, whose effects haunted me back when i was like 6, i mean, look at the bear and the bunny.. those scared the hell outta me :D
no, really great review of a great movie, had to be put up
Good tip xpsyrainiax, and u also brought up a very good point. I think one of the reasons why Akira was such a great film was the complexity of the story but at the same time it was complex enough for viewers to gradually get a grasp on.
the only thing that kinda confused me about the movie was akira himself,. everything else seemed to fit fine. like if akira exploded the city,. im assuming it killed him and any body part left of him was put into freezing., and the whole unverse energy idea thing etc,. i did watch the movie 3 times but i think i put the pieces together. the movie does require a certain amount of self thinking,, a tip is to watch the movie conscously,. u have to use ure mind alot to put the pieces together during
The DVD release from Pioneer 8 years ago also had this neat little feature that made one able to pause the movie at points where English and Japanese text briefly appeared on the screen so that they could read it (Japanese text would be translated into English). It sounds boring pausing to read dog food ads I know, but when you watch the movie like this you can read all the English and Japanese graffiti all over the place, which is very amusing. Only special feature I cared about to be honest.
i really didnt get the pattern of the movie, the pattern of tetsuo's power or something, if anyone knows please tell me, lol, btw this movie's bad azz, lol, its pretty cool
haha, it's just one of those movies that you have to watch again in order to fully understand. But pretty much Tetsuo got his powers when he in contact (crash) into the weird looking 'kid'. Pretty much your standard Super Hero movie, when (for example) Peter Parker got bitten by the spider to make him into Spider-Man.
I'm 20 now, and I remember always seeing the cover for akira in anime stores in the mall when I was a young teen, and thinking "what the fuck is this video with a pill on it?". It's one of those things that you keep running in to (seeing in my case) and ending up finally watching, except I was 19 when I finally saw it.
haha, well the main focus of the Movie pretty much happened when Tetsuo crashed into the weird looking 'kid' after that...it was pretty much a domino effect.
Thank you VOR!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you for this review! I was runnig short of ideas of films I coukd see, but im deffinetly gonna download this! Its looks so freakin awesome, and the art is simply amazing!
haha, well just like i said near the end of the review, it's a MUST buy for any Anime or even movie fan. If you don't mind the lack of Special Features that the 2001 edition had, it's still a great (Looking) movie nonetheless...
Thanks for the view TheCodefinder! Glad you liked it! :D

haha, well just like i said near the end of the review, it's a MUST buy for any Anime or even movie fan. If you don't mind the lack of Special Features that the 2001 edition had, it's still a great (Looking) movie nonetheless...
Thanks for the view TheCodefinder! Glad you liked it! :D
