I don't get how this is considered so nice? He scores on a give and go and then jumps as far as he can, risking injury. If you're going to tell me this compares to Ovie's goal or any of the top ten in the last ten years you're crazy. Watch the puck go in, then him jump. The goal is nothing special, it's just a picturesque moment from one of the greatest to ever play the game.
@pruane2isgod Perhaps he did want to jump, but as he put his hands up his legs were hooked out from under him. Both his effort and that of the defenseman caused him to appear to fly across the ice.
@pruane2isgod You have to understand that Orr was unquestionably the best player in the game at that time. He changed the way the game was played and it had been many years since the Bruins won a Stanley Cup. So it was a dream for Bruins fans.
Even for other fans it is memorable. It was on national TV on Sunday afternoon on CBS, which wasn't usually the case in those days. Only Sunday games on TV. So hockey fans everywhere saw this. I was 12 years old and it is burned into my memory forever.
“I always tell Bobby he was up in the air so so long that I had had time to shower and change before he hit the ice.” Glen Hall --- Fuck Ovechkin, Gretzky and Crosby or who ever you claim to be the best... This guy right here, is a Fuckin` Legend!
@waterman9465 Dave Goucher said "Four, 3, 2, 1.....Get The Duck Boats Ready!!!" (referring to the "rolling rally" victory parade that would take place later that w eek)
Id like to say that was the last cup the Bruins will ever win but they did win in 72. Bobby Orr the only Bruin i ever liked and he played before i was born. One of the top 5 goals of all time.
While Fred Cusick did play-by-play for WBZ Radio's Boston Bruins coverage in 1970 (and John Pierson did color on radio for playoff games airing on national TV, and thus not covered by WSBK-TV), I have always thought that the only English-language radio call in the U.S. of this goal was by Marty Glickman on the Mutual Network.
Supposedly, Glickman remarked after the goal "They said Bobby Orr could do everything but fly, but we've just seen him fly!!".
@altfactor On second thought, even if a national radio deal prevented WBZ from broadcasting the 1970 Finals, Cusick and Pearson might have taped a play-by-play to be excerpted on a newscast, given that the game was in Boston.

@TuukkaTime Okay? Brett Hull won the cup in OT in 99... You don't see them saying that was the greatest goal ever! You get a clue Bruins fan. There is at least 10 DMen in the league now who could have done the same thing that Bobby did back then but better. Do you think Bobby would lead the league in points now a days not a chance. Nik Lidstrom should and will go down as the best dman to ever play!
@JayGoff17 it's the evolution of the game. that is why bobby orr's skill and style of play is so important to the history of the nhl. if he didn't play the way he did, then the guys you mentioned today don't play the way they do. you can't really compare today's players to a player that played 40 years ago. everything has changed, which all has to do with the evolution of the game in which bobby orr was an integral part of. i thought that was common sense, but apparently not.
@chalklinerefusal1 What do you mean? Players today don't play that way because there is to much skill all around for players to skate through everyone. So Bobby Orr taught players now a days to do what? Not skate through everyone because it's 2 hard now? Sure back then Bobby Orr was the best. To say he is the greatest of all time isn't smart. Players are going to evolve from other players no matter what, players now and in 40 yrs from now are gonna play the way they do from players now.
@JayGoff17 he revolutionized the game, like it or not, especially from the defensive position. my opinion is he is the best all time, but obviously there is room for argument. (i.e. wayne gretzky and mario lemieux come to mind). also considering the time frames in which they played, and the fact that orr was a defenseman and not a forward. i think you are only arguing that orr is not the all time best. because the tail end of your post seems to agree with the idea of the evolution of the game
@chalklinerefusal1 You simply cannot compare different eras in the NHL. This was almost two years before Team Canada was rudely awakened by the USSR. That caused the style of the game to change radically. Orr was the first defenseman to carry the puck the entire length of the ice and also leave his post to attack. You can't imagine how different he was from any other player of his era. Also, later in his career his knees were ruined but was still better than other players with two good legs.
wow that sure brings back a great memory!! i was 12 yrs. old and still remember it like yesterday! numbah foooor bobby oooooor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11
I happened to see the 40th anniversary special and NESN played this call. Although the Don Earle call is good, the Fred Cusick call is simply amazing. The "and they go wild" comment and the the "SCORE!" element must have made WSBK say, okay, we need this guy in the booth. And of course, Johnny Pierson recaps with amazing precision.
If the Bruins blow this tonight, I'm going to look at the bruins differently for the rest of my life. I'll still be a bruins fan obviously, but it would SUCK if we lost tonight.
Two things missing, Cusick saying the Bruins win the stanley cup, and fans storming the ice once the puck went in the net.

Bobby Orr's records as a defenseman are untouchable. + 124, 46 goals, 102 assists! No one ever dominated their position like Orr.

@altfactor When did Bob Wilson start calling the radio games? I grew up in Ohio listening to many Bruins games on WBZ "the spirit of 103...WBZ"
krezzykrezz 1 month ago
@krezzykrezz Around 1997 or '98 I think. I remember Bob Neumeier taking over around then, then Dave Goucher came in around I think 2001.

I think WBZ-FM of the time (NOT the present-day WBZ-FM aka 98.5 The Sports Hub) aired this game.
Hearing the Cusick call - especially as clean as the recording is - makes this clip sound like an old-school TV38 Bruins telecast.
