just an opinion...grunge was a word made up to promote the fact that these bands put more emphasis on their music rather than their appearance...in a way, an antonym for 'Glam' (hair metal?)...and since it was different than that style, they called it grunge for lack of a better word...I could be wrong, just a guess.
