As a sailor i can clearly see how the vertical turbines make a lot more efficient use of winds aerodynamic power than horizontal ones, which probably waste at least half of it.
I think ridiculous would be understating the usefulness of this crap...and apparently nobody seems to care about the visual pollution they create, the fact that in all these years no "wind-farm" has managed to pay its cost, or the numerous accidents, and deaths created by these monstrosities. Not to mention the "elephant-in-the-room", building them, transporting them, and installing them creates a far bigger footprint (if you believe in that nonsense) then the benefits obtained in their life-cy
Those are probably way safer than those first kind. We have those first kind all over Colorado, when it gets too cold they have to shut them off or giant icicles come flying off of them at crazy speed. And other scary stuff too..
I think the new version is much better, Looks more like a structure than the old one just sticking out of the ground and also affecting the background.
I believe those second turbines are made so that migratory birds don't run into them. Standard turbines are one of, if not the, biggest killer of migratory birds, at least in North America.
Looks like these ones are based on the Darrius design. They are cheaper 'cos the generator can be located on the ground due to the vertical axis. They start easier but as far as I know the wind speed they can handle is limited
We're also developing vertical wind turbines. Ours are taller and slimmer. The great thing about vertical wind turbines is that they don't have to face the wind. The wind can power them from any direction.
you wouldnt happen to know the name of this other type?
i wonder how efficient they are compared to 3 blade wind turbine (the usual model) (of course Im not trying to think about 1 to 1 as they are very different in size)
@dragade101 I dont know about efficiency, and I dont know that this other types height is limited, but since in this instance it doesnt rise as high as the 3-blade the taller setup can catch more consistant and stronger wind.
Usually the higher the altitude the more efficient due to an increase in available power.

WORLD RECORD: BIGGEST WIND TURBINE
Visit: windturbinecarriedbywheels.weebly.com
ZERO-NOISE from the gears and the generators because they are sealed underground (Only the outer parts of the turbines may be heard.).
SAVES THE BIRDS AND BATS because the turbines are slow-moving since the speed is in the transmission gears and in the generators.
DOES NOT NEED TO OCCUPY A WIDER LANDSCAPE because the turbine can be very tall.
HELPS THE WIND ENERGY COMPANIES because it is FREE FOR ALL.

Now I wanna see a video of one of the nuclear power plants which produce the main portion of electricity in Japan.

Are you sure they produce electricity?
It doesn't look so...

I think wind turbines are actually pretty elegant. The "artsy" one is as one commenter said "structural".. The reason I dislike them.

We need more of those in America.

@Jimaera why? do you have something against co2 or migratory birds?

Can you make one about adoption in Japan!

If Japan can do it, why can't Americans do it?
lazyvietboy24 3 months ago
@lazyvietboy24
Wind power provides less than 0.2 percent of Japan's energy supply.
wind+solar combined, around 1%
I don't know the stats in US, but it can hardly be worse than that.

Saw one of those in an american video, a bit smaller but still. I think it was designed to be quiet

You'll actually find those other places around the world as well, pretty new though, a lot of diy ppl making these out of drum barrels as well.

One of the reason its such an awesome country.
