All I know is I can't imagine my consciousness not existing. If when we do die we simply return to a pre-birth state of nothingness, what was the point of having been self-aware at all? I know that every time you enter deep sleep you lose your ability to be self aware. You simply wake up at a time later than when you went to sleep with no awareness of anything that happened during sleep. Where was your consciousness and how did it return intact? The dead will lie in an unconscience state, like a deep "sleep" untill judgement day, then be resurected, judged, and either recieve a new & perfect physical body, and inherit a new & perfect physical world, OR return to the grave(which is what Hell translates into), and then burn up with this old world. Sense time we know of here will cease to exist after we "die", there will be a gap in that time, so it will seem like we would face our judgement instantly.

That's it. Death is the end as far as we are concerned, and no one can prove otherwise. The "theory" of heaven, hell, an afterlife, etc requires a physical presence in order to experience said happenings. It just doesn't add up. Maybe there is a moment of unbelievable euphoria at the time of death due to the release of a massive amount of brain waves combined with a lack of oxygen. But that's the extent of it. People want to "live on", but I don't believe it's possible.

nothingness.. people always refer to the time before you were born is going to be the same way after death.. nothing.. problem with that statement is that how can you possibly recollect anything as a newborn baby.. its like dreams, sometimes we remember them sometimes we don't.. doesn't mean they don't happen every night. I believe there is an amnesia effect.. the passing of a conscience/energy from one brain to another might cause that.

There is actually scientific proof that we DON'T all dream every night, (at least not active dreams). This is quite easily proven through the monitoring of brain waves while sleeping. Sometimes the brain is very active while sleeping (this is dreaming in REM sleep). Sometimes - almost nothing beyond a base level brain wave pattern. I get your point however.

Actually all the possibilities you've sited, including the first one (which does require belief in something) operate under the presupposition that when you die, you are not really dead.

But you are correct that most people, including most modern Christians, believe that when you die, you are not really dead.

which is very close, if you know your bible prophecy, Lord Jesus will come with thousands of his angels and defeat satan and the armys of this world at armeggedon and then God will raise all the saints and followers of Christ who have ever lived to eternal life to reign with Jesus in his heavenly kingdom here on earth which will last for 1000 years of pure peace, then when that is over the rest of the dead will be raised - (atheists, murderers and such and they will get a choice to be forgiven

when you die you simply fall asleep and the life giving spirit that God gave you returns to its source, just like Jesus said "I commend my spirit to you father" - and then he died, he did not continue on in either heaven nor hell, he was sleeping for three days, but God the father raised him to an eternal body, because when he is raised he says to mary magdelane that he has not yet gone to his father, but he did ascend then where he remains with his father until his second coming

this universe is all about reason, the reason we have a sun, is to heat this planet to give life, the reason why the grass is green is because of chlorophyll doesn't absorb the green from the spectrum of light, ra ra ra. Thanks Dave, this is a pretty comprehensive breakdown of the different belief systems concerning an after life. I'd have to agree with you that one's own "personal heaven" would be far more ideal than most organized religions seem to preach as the nature of the afterlife. It's funny that the idea of secularizing and intrapersonalizing heaven appeals to me, seeing as the belief in an afterlife has been traditionally, very nonsecular and suprapersonal.
