You can tell it was edited in Avid because of the poor aspect ratio conversion. You can tell it was edited by an Avid editor because the bad conversion was not noticed.
Yes, it is very easy. It is just using PIP or 3D warp using 4 video tracks and scaling and moving the videos. It was done on a very old Media Composer.
I have a friend who swears by Vegas. It has come a long way and is very powerful. I think Avid will let you edit faster than any other editor out there. The interface has not changed much over the years, so it may not be the most fancy looking product on the market. To me, its about how fast and efficient you can be.
Hmmm.... I have a few friends that have Final Cut Express and they can do a lot of really great effects, which is what I'm mainly looking for, like making water levitate or doing things that would normally seem impossible to do. I know Final Cut is good with that kinda of stuff, and I was wondering if there was any difference really between the two. Avid seems to be a lot more about titles and transitions and things like that than awesome visual effects and such
Avid is used by the high end studios and Final Cut is used more by the independants. I think you can edit faster with Avid than Final Cut. Both can do some nice effects, but to do some really cool stuff, you should try After Effects.
more professional editors prefer using avid than final cut, if you can learn how to edit on avid with no problem, you can go onto any other program and should be fine because all of that other stuff as far as final cut and premiere go are user friendlier than avid. i have avid media composer 3.5 for mac and i'm highly satisfied with it
i bought avid media composer but i´ve never did anything with it it so dificult i always watch video tutorials and i can`t see what`s the difference between AMC and FCP i mean it`s easier to use FCP and friendier at the same time
It is mostly personal preference. Most Hollywood movies are still cut on Avid. I find that I can edit faster on AVID than FCP. MAC applications definitely look better on computer monitors than PC's, although the final result is the same when making a tape/DVD. It also seems that PC's have a ton more tools, utililies, converters, etc available than MAC. PC's are cheaper than MAC's. I really like AVID's trimming tools.
Yes, but be sure to use a hardware configuration that Avid recommends. You may get lucky with other configurations, but there is always a chance that you will have problems.
I am thinking of going with avid seeing as how i dont have mac, how much is the avid media composer or would I be better off with adobe premieres CS3?
This just goes to show how important it is to have good looking footage. There is nothing in this that can't be done in Final Cut.... it just looks awesome cause all the shots are rich and creative!
I thought the demo was great! I am a new AVID editor and I can see I have a lot to learn... Now if I could get those magicians to reveal some of their tricks...
Ya I am. The boxes that move from center to side of the screen and stop. That needed no keyframes? I know the other stuff could have been done with simple pushes and such...Avid's out of the box plugins
Oh, ya got me...actually that was a template used for the show I worked on, so I never keyed that particualar sequence, only the color keying and the titles...I do however key frames (pip) often on my current show...what do you work on and where are you located...I love new Avid friends!!!
Great:) I'm on a few shows now in NYC. Work on various stuff for TV. Did a little commercial and corporate video stuff back in the day. Good stuff. Liked the demo btw.
Thanks for the props...hows work for editors in NYC...been thinking of checking it out--shoot i'd do news again to be there! Now I'm working on a daily spanish-language variety show--i think we're up for an emmy..would like to see some east coast vids..are you gonna post something on your page???
Yes, this video was all done with keyframes on a retired MC 7.2 with a 3D effects module (pizza box). I recently set up an Xpress version 5.5.3. It's about the same, but much faster. I hope to get a MOJO soon so I can view real time. I love working on the Avid. I wish there were more hours in the day!!!

You can get an academic version of Media Composer for under $300 on eBay.

Not much keyframing. Just a bunch of video tracks and effect fade ins :)

Nice demo reel, popeacid. And your video looks quite clear (no pixelization)
for a video on YouTube with quite a bit of movement. What format and settings did you use to encode?
