With all do respect to the Irish and the Jew, the movie was way inferior than the book. Read the book and you will see all the flaws made by the script writer and I am surprised that these two great actors went along with it...

This movie was not very faithful to what really happened there,...I know,..I used to be a prisoner on Devils Island,..and let me tell you,...it was pure Hell. I'm now 107 yrs old and as I look back during my stay there I can absolutely say without any reservation...that the food there was horrible

Undoubtedly, one of the best movies of all time...McQueen/Hoffman at their absolute best...saw it when it came out and I was just a kid and I still love it today...should've won every Academy award of 1973, in my humble opinion of course.
