  • OK Bentley thats it, I am very frustrated with you worm set-up, LOL. How on gods beautiful green earth are you keeping the fruit flies away. I have not seen a single fruit fly in your videos and the food isn't even covered, what the heck!!! I have tried everything (freezing, microwave, covering) to keep them out and have now moved the bin out of the basement and into the garage before the wife makes me get rid of it all together. PLEASE HELP!!!!

  • Hey bentley, how can I get rid of ants in my bin?

  • @zomgwtfbbqbagel - I was told by a couple people that if you have ants your bin is too dry.

  • Curious, how many pounds of worm did you start off with? I certainly will not be using your experiment as a model, but I am curious. I'm planning to transition out of using plastic bins, and based on the amount of compost I produce, I know one pound will not be enough.

  • @ayounes - I started off with very few worms. All I did was add some material that happened to have some Red Worms (cocoons etc) in it. I then basically neglected the bin for a few months. Even by the time I started the experiment I would be very surprised if there was as much as 1/4 or 1/2 lb of worms in there.

  • good grief ! thats way too much food waste for that size bin, I'm missing the point

  • @stymye - absolutely, and that's why I say "don't try this at home". This was a fun experiment to see how the system would handle that much waste. It ended up doing extremely well. Would it be able to sustain that much waste addition over time? Probably not - but I know that it will take a lot more than I previously realized. :-)

Size definitely isn't the only important consideration. Air flow is extremely important as well.

  • Wow it almost went down and ich from the 4 days later one!

  • Looking forward to the results!

  • very cool system though probably a little messy for a newbie like myself. =) I haven't actually harvested yet...

  • very informative....!
