40miles per charge may sound low, but it is more than adequate for my daily needs. But, about once a month I do have to travel 280 miles. In MI it is too expensive owning 2 cars, so the Volt, for me, is two cars in one. I won't use gas for my daily trips, and gas when I go further. And unlike my Prius, I'll achieve 50mpg on the highway. Actually, $40k was the ceiling, currently it looks closer to $28k (after tax rebate), which is the right price for this car.

The new Prius has 134 maximum horsepower: the Volt has 150.

The new Prius gets 50 mpg while driving around as a parallel hybrid - the Volt gets 60 mpg driving around as a series hybrid (after the initial electric outlet charge is used up).

The new Prius cannot be charged overnight, replacing increasingly expensive gasoline with electricity - the Volt can be an electric commuting car for 75% of Americans. Plugin overnight, drive to and from work, use no gasoline.

The Volt will sell.

Just like all other GM products, I doubt quality will be built into it. Additionally, it only goes 40 miles on the charge; the Tesla Roadster goes well beyond 200. GM is too far behind the competition, and they should just file bankruptcy.

The Volt goes 40 miles before the gas engine starts charging the battery pack.

Thus one never gets stranded with a Volt.

Total range over 500 miles.

I guess you didn't watch the Frontline episode where they filmed the Volt going up a hill. The car's charge couldn't propel it up the hill (it was travelling at 5 mph) before it died before making it to the top. Then they told the cameraman to play the video on fast forward, so that it would appear that the car was actually going fast. A Tesla roadster goes well beyond 200 mph, no gas necessary.

Like I said before, GM builds no quality into their products.

That's been the sticking point the whole time.

The EV1 was fast, you can find a video on the EV1 running top speed and it was pure 100% electric all the way with great range.

The new Mini electric does 150 miles on a 2.5 hour charge, my car cost only $9700 brand new and it still does almost 70 miles per US gallon and that's just a normal diesel, so who's gonna buy this volt? America should take some leaves from Europe's book for a change, they might learn something. No wonder GM made a $38 billion loss this year!
